A CN through freight pauses on the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 7 Jan. '20. Train was preparing to set out and pick up cars and had three locomotives, CN 5706, CN 8832, CN 5696. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., can be seen in the background. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. The north leg of the wye can also be seen. To the right lies some evidence of illegal dumping at Arrowhead Park.

CN 5626 and CN 2164
Description:
CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 and passes American Colloid Co. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 28 Feb. '18. American Colloid is serviced by CN via former C&NW rails. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

A CN through freight parallels Harrison St. as it heads northeast past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 12 Dec. '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 5627 and CN 5755. A remnant of the former C&NW main line runs parallel to the left. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background at left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The W. Bell St. overpass is partially visible in the background to the right.

Description:
A CN through freight approaches Harrison St. as it heads south via former SOO rails at Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., WI, on 1 Dec. '20. Train had four locomotives, CN 2999 and CN 5627 pulling as well as CN 2984 and CN 2308 or 2808 mid-train. The former C&NW right-of-way runs parallel to these tracks just out-of-frame to the right. The CN main line transitions from the former SOO to the former C&NW right-of-way at Harrison St. I was standing on Harrison St., in the City of Oshkosh, but the train is traversing an isolated, pitiful scrap of the Town of Oshkosh.

CN through freight heads southeast via former SOO rails at Fremont Station, WI on 2 May '14. The station sign says Fremont and it is listed as such on CN’s system map, but the nearest point of the Fremont city limits is over 2 miles to the southwest, as the crow flies. This location is labeled Fremont Sidings on some maps and, technically, there are two sidings here. The passing siding is still used, but the industrial siding that used to serve at least three industries has not been used for years.

CN unit train of empty centerbeam flatcars passes the old Dale feed mill and approaches Main St./Hwy. 96 as it heads northwest via former SOO rails on a foggy 21 Jan. '17. The Dale feed mill was built between 1889 and 1908, when it was Northern Grain Co. By ’10 it was the Western Elevator Co., Western Grain Co. in some references. It was the Steffen’s Elevator Co. from ca. ’21 until at least ’68, it was purchased by John H. Steffens and later run by his sons. It was Dale Feed Service from ca. ’73 until at least ’81. It has been home to Earth Sense Energy Systems, Inc., since ’96. Train was slowing to halt at Anton Siding.

Description:
CN through freight emerges from behind the historic Tuttle Press Co. factory and approaches N. Lawe St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 1 Jul. ’14. Train was headed from Stevens Point to Green Bay and had two locomotives, CN 5641 pulling and CN 2136 pushing. The factory dates to 1905, it later operated as Artfaire and finally as Sulpaco West, Inc. For nearly a century this facility produced a variety of renowned specialty papers: napkins, table covers, tissue, craft paper, paper dolls, gift boxes, crepe paper, and especially gift wrapping paper, until Sullivan Paper Co. shuttered this plant on 27 Jun. ’02 and moved production to one of its other facilities in Mass. Since then it appears to have been used as storage for one or more local businesses. The spur used to serve Tuttle Press, Luvata (formerly Valley Cast), and Appvion (originally Appleton Papers), only the latter is a current rail customer.

The trail unit of a CN Stevens Point to Green Bay train idles on former C&NW rails on the siding at Stroebe, WI on 27 Jul. '14. Train had two locomotives, CN 5798 pulling and CN 5641 pushing. The 40-car train halted at the northeast end of Stroebe siding, to wait for a local which was dropping a string of cars at Appleton Junction. For some reason the trail unit uncoupled from the train and ran back to the southwest end of the siding, seemed a little unusual. The western approach to the Roland Kampo Bridge over Little Lake Butte des Morts is in the background.

A CN through freight crosses the Wolf River via the former SOO bridge as it heads northwest at Gills Landing, WI, on 20 Feb. '21. The bridge was built as a swing bridge in 1894. A significant mechanical failure left the pivot inoperable from 2003 until the fall of 2011, when it was converted into a vertical lift bridge. According to bridgehunter.com, it "is likely the only vertical-lift bridge in the world with a center lift tower".

A CN local approaches the ca. 1887 Pembine union depot at the junction of the CN, former SOO, rails and E&LS, former MILW, rails at Pembine, WI on 30 Sep. '14. The local has just dropped off 17 cars for the E&LS and, after a brief pause and a horn blast short of the junction, will head for Goodman, WI with 9 cars. After a brief pause and a horn blast, a CN local crosses the diamond at the ca. 1887 Pembine union depot at the junction of the CN, former SOO, rails and E&LS, former MILW, rails at Pembine, WI on 30 Sep. '14. The local has just dropped off 17 cars for the E&LS and will now head for Goodman, WI with 9 cars. A CN local passes the site of the former depot and approaches Gasset Rd. as it pulls 9 cars northwest via former SOO rails at Dunbar, WI on 30 Sep. '14. Not sure where train originated, but it was headed for Goodman, WI. Gasset Rd. is a remnant of the Dunbar & Wausaukee right of way, which formed a junction with the SOO just out of frame to the left. The depot was built by the SOO ca. 1887, a photograph of the depot and the junction can be found at: http://www.midcontinent.org/imagedb/postcard_detail.php?record_id=411. Supposedly the depot was moved to Laona where it is used by the Lumberjack Steam Train. The well-groomed ATV/snowmobile trail used to be Depot Rd.

CN local emerges from the forest into a small clearing as it hauls 9 cars northeast via the former SOO rails at Kremlin, WI on 1 Oct. '14. Train was heading back to MI after servicing Specialty Granules, Inc. (SGI) at Kremlin and setting out 24 cars for the E&LS at Pembine, WI. The train is starting to descend a long grade down to the bridge over the Menominee River. I don't know the percentage of the gradient, but it appears quite a bit steeper than average (not so much here but closer to the river).

Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.
