CN 3970
Title:  CN 3970
Description:  A CN train heads south past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 18 Feb. '24. Train had two locomotives, CN 3249 pulling and CN 3970 mid-train. In the background, we can see evidence of continued expansion of Galloway Co., 601 S. Commercial St. (an active rail customer). This view would have been prevented by the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

GTW 4907
Title:  GTW 4907
Description:  A CN train approaches N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 17 Feb. '24. A KK Integrated Logistics facility, historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016), looms in the background. KK Integrated Logistics purchased this facility on 12 Jan. '22, after Clearwater Paper Corp. abruptly shut it down in '21. Originally incorporated as Lakeside Paper Co. on 9 Nov. 1910, construction of the mill began in ’11, and paper production commenced on 12 Jun. ‘12. At some point they started to sell a large share of their book paper production to Sears, Roebuck & Co. for their catalogues. The mill was sold and re-incorporated as Lakeview Paper Co. on 9 Aug. ’20. Sears, Roebuck & Co. bought the facility ca. the mid- to late-‘20s. The mill was shut down on 1 Feb. ’29 after a boiler failure and Sears promptly sold it to the Canadian firm of Fraser Paper, Ltd. (which also produced book paper for Sears). Fraser did not hold it long, they sold it to Kimberly-Clark Corp. ca. Mar. ’29. Kimberly-Clark sold the facility to American Tissue Mills ca. Aug. ’96. The mill abruptly shut down on 6 Sep. ’01 due to American Tissue’s significant financial problems. The briefly idled mill was purchased by Cellu Tissue Corp. in ’02 and was renamed Cellu Tissue Corp. - Neenah, commonly shortened to Cellu Tissue - Neenah. Cellu Tissue Corp. was acquired by Clearwater Paper Group in ’10. This huge industrial facility supplied hundreds of jobs for over a century. From now on it might supply a dozen, maybe a few more, if we're lucky. This facility received rail service for 109 years. It will probably never see a freight car again.

CN 3909 and CN 5708
Title:  CN 3909 and CN 5708
Description:  A CN train parallels Harrison St. and approaches the W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) as it heads northeast past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 17 Feb. '24. If I had been paying attention, I could have captured a photograph of the distributed braking car. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a spur, runs parallel on the other side of the train.

GTW 5851 and GTW 4933
Title:  GTW 5851 and GTW 4933
Description:  A CN train approaches Towmen Rd. as it transitions from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 10 Feb. '24. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

CN 9673 and CN 9574
Title:  CN 9673 and CN 9574
Description:  A CN train crosses S. Mason St. while headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 31 Dec. '23. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I have discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the left (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. You can also see that the bridge abutments and piers were designed to support two tracks, but I don't believe this area was ever double-tracked.

CN 9673 and CN 9574
Title:  CN 9673 and CN 9574
Description:  A CN train passes the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, depot as it sets out cars at Appleton Junction, WI, on 31 Dec. '23. The train continued on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond right about where the front truck of the lead locomotive rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible in the background is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St., Appleton, WI. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

CN 9673 and CN 9574
Title:  CN 9673 and CN 9574
Description:  A CN train is about to clear W. 2nd St. as it sets out cars at the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 31 Dec. '23. The train continued on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

The elevator was built by GB&W around the turn of the 20th Century, the railroad sold it in 1971. It was adorned with a pair of large GB&W logos from about the ‘60s into the ‘80s.

IC 3115 and WC 15
Title:  IC 3115 and WC 15
Description:  IC 3115 shoves WC 15 through the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 12 Nov. '23. I believe they were assembling the Oshkosh local. Sorry, but I will not willingly utter the phrase "shoving platform" to describe a piece of rolling stock which is obviously a caboose. WC 15 is the former AC 9602, although one reference claims it was AC 9606.

IC 3115 and QTTX 130503
Title:  IC 3115 and QTTX 130503
Description:  IC 3115 sorts cars, including QTTX 130503 (transporting a Nationwide Boiler Incorporated skid-mounted boiler), at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 12 Nov. '23. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century.

IC 3137, et al.
Title:  IC 3137, et al.
Description:  A CN train crosses Winchester Rd./Hwy. II as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 12 Nov. '23. The train was heading for Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, IC 3137 and CN 9515. The divergence of rail lines at Winchester Rd., where one line heads northwest toward Stevens Point and the other line heads northeast toward Green Bay, is labeled Winnebago Junction on some old maps.

CN 9515 and IC 3137
Title:  CN 9515 and IC 3137
Description:  A CN train passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing as it departs the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 5 Nov. '23. The train was heading for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

ELS 502
Title:  ELS 502
Description:  An E&LS train passes Veterans Park and crosses the Little Peshtigo River via a 1902 masonry/concrete arch bridge as it heads north with 18 cars via former MILW rails at Coleman, WI, on 23 Apr. '21. The locals have affixed a plaque claiming this to be the "Joseph Brault Memorial Bridge 1824-1887." Joseph Urgel Brault is considered, by some, to be the founder of the Village of Coleman, WI, in 1870, but doesn't appear to have had anything to do with this bridge specifically or the railroad in general. Some references claim that the village was originally named Braultville and later changed to Coleman. Others claim that it has always been Coleman, named for a man who owned a lot of the land. Another reference asserts that Coleman and the neighboring village of Pound were named for US Representative Thaddeus Coleman Pound. He served on a committee which considered railroad land grants. One reference claims August Beaudry "to be the real founder of [Coleman]." He built a boarding house/store/saloon near the railroad right-of-way ca. 1881 as the M&N approached what is now Coleman. The original Brault settlement was about 2 miles east of Coleman, where Hwy. B crosses the Little Peshtigo River. Referred to as Braultville (some references claim officially, others unofficially), it has also been referred to as East Coleman. A small community sprouted up near this bridge site in 1880, around the Waldron Dickinson Co. (later Marshall Holmes Co., later E. E. Bolles Co.) sawmill (which stood behind me on the opposite side of Bus. 141). The community was referred to as Little River, but is now part of Coleman. The railroad construction camp was located near this site. The Marshall Spur connected the sawmill to the M&N main line. The sawmill closed in 1911 after the local timber supply was exhausted.

GTW 4933 and IC 3115
Title:  GTW 4933 and IC 3115
Description:  A CN train passes the former C&NW depot and approaches S. 14th St. as it heads southwest with 23 3-bay covered hoppers at Manitowoc, WI, on 20 Aug. '23. I previously thought this depot had been built by the MLS&W ca. 1872. Some references state or suggest it could be the original depot built when the railroad was incorporated. However, the Sanborn maps reveal that this masonry depot was built between 1887 and 1894 to replace the earlier framed depot. If it was built prior to 1 Sep. '93, it was built by the MLS&W. If it was built after that date, it was C&NW. A couple of awkward additions were constructed after the railroad stopped using it. It is/was used by Holiday House of Manitowoc County, Inc. They have a newer facility, not sure if they still use this or not. The C&NW built a new depot about a mile to the west in 1945, but that one no longer exists.
