GTW 4620
Title:  GTW 4620
Description:  CN local heads northwest over former MILW rails as it passes through what used to be the industrial heart of Chilton, WI on 11 Dec. '13. The early village was originally named Stantonville, in honor of Moses Stanton, founder. The land was purchased by John Marygold in 1852 and he changed the name to Chilington, his hometown in England. He sent a request to the county seat, then Stockbridge, to make the name change official. A miscommunication resulted in the middle syllable being lost to history and the name became Chilton.

IC 3138 and GTW 4620
Title:  IC 3138 and GTW 4620
Description:  CN local halted at Millview Dr. as it waits to enter the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 1 Feb. '14. Train was likely returning from Manitowoc. Until a few years ago, a train stopped here would have been hidden behind the Glatfelter Paper mill (formerly Bergstrom Paper, originally Winnebago Paper), which stood for well over a century (the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874). The lead locomotive is parked under the remnants of the steam pipes that used to connect the paper mill to the now defunct Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant).

IC 9602 and Grand GTW 4620
Title:  IC 9602 and Grand GTW 4620
Description:  CN local shoves a string of cars along former C&NW rails to service Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (the tan building partially visible on the left) and Imerys USA, Inc. (the blue, truncated, triangular shape partially visible behind the tree line, background left) in Combined Locks, WI on 18 Feb. '14 (Imerys is just across the border in Kimberly). The tracks are quite sinuous here; they run on the south bank of the Fox River. I didn't notice the Bald Eagle until I was reviewing the photos.

IC 9602 and GTW 4620
Title:  IC 9602 and GTW 4620
Description:  CN local passes L. C. Siding enroute to service Appleton Coated paper mill via former C&NW rails in Combined Locks, WI on 18 Feb. '14. I have long thought the station sign is wrong, but I haven’t found definitive proof yet. I presume that L. C. is short for Little Chute, which is on the opposite side of the river. Seems like the sign should be C. L. Siding, for Combined Locks. Does anyone have an old C&NW timetable handy?

GTW 4620, GTW 6221, CN 9601
Title:  GTW 4620, GTW 6221, CN 9601
Description:  CN local assembles its train of 34 cars at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 May '16. I believe they were preparing to head toward Manitowoc, WI. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the owners didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:  CN local parallels 4th St. and approaches De Pere St. (the current street signs have been lazily bastardized to Depere St.) as it traverses the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI with 34 cars on 15 May '16. I believe they were headed for Manitowoc, WI. The sun's location was less-than-ideal, but I wanted to capture a train with 3 locomotives in this yard because it doesn't seem to happen very often.

Title:  CN 3089, EMDX 7218, GTW 4620, CN 5449
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 12 Feb. '21. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The Main St. overpass is partially visible in the background to the left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.
