IC 3115
Title:  IC 3115
Description:  CN local services Intertape Polymer Group (IPG) from the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 5 Jun. '16. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location here on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO tracks. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99.

Title:  IC 3115
Description:  CN local crosses Appleton St. as it works in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 5 Jun. '16. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

Title:  IC 3115
Description:  CN local disappears behind Dura-Fibre, LLC, 352 6th St., Menasha, WI, as it shoves north via former Milwaukee Road (MILW) rails at Menasha, WI on 5 Jun. '16. The facility has a spur, but it does not seem to benefit from regular rail service. Organized as the National Tractor & Machinery Co. at Chicago in 1916 (some references state ’18). They reorganized as the Uncle Sam Tractor and Machinery Co. ca. Mar. ’18 and moved to Menasha ca. Feb. ‘19. They constructed a new 60’ x 125’ factory and 25’ x 40’ office building at 344 6th St. and erected 2 additions in ’20, with further expansion in ’22. The company reorganized as Wisconsin Automotive Corp. ca. ’23 in order to add automobiles to its line of products, particularly the Harris Six. They went out of business sometime between ’24 and ’28. The Neenah Shoe Co. occupied the plant in ’28. By ’31 the Wisconsin Container Corp. had moved into the facility to manufacture solid fiber and corrugated containers. The company was acquired by Menasha Corp. ca. ’69 and became their Solid Fibre Division. On 8 Feb. ’73, Menasha Corp. was granted a trademark for their “Grain-tainer” fiberboard grain doors for boxcars, but I’m not positive if they were made here or at another Menasha Corp. facility. Menasha Corp. sold the facility in ’04 and the name was changed to Dura-Fibre at some point.

Title:  IC 3115
Description:  CN local passes behind the former C&NW depot as it prepares to head for Expera Specialty Solutions at Kaukauna, WI on 30 Dec. '16. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St. to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. It became known as the north side depot after 1890, when the MLS&W, later C&NW, built their large, ornate depot south of the Fox River. That depot disappeared many years ago.

Description:  CN local momentarily fouls Gertrude St. on former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 8 Jul. '17. A crewmember is preparing to dismount in order to throw the turnout just out of frame to the right. That will permit them to descend the grade down to the banks of the Fox River in order to service the large Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill. From its founding in 1883 until 26 Jun. '13, the Kaukauna paper mill was Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers).

Description:  A CN local crosses S. Story St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 25 Jun. '18. Train was headed back toward Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna. The Non-mountable Curb Island (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) has been installed recently (since 6 May) as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. The interesting, old building at 302 S. Story St., partially visible beyond the locomotives, is currently home to The Train Station. Their facebook page describes it as a venue for “live music, open mic, educational presentations, film showings, yoga, classes, meetings.” The building dates to at least 1921, when it was a neighborhood grocery store owned by Otto J. Ruhsam. Circa the ‘50s it was the Heigl Grocery Beer Depot. The area to the right was home to the historic Pierce Manufacturing plant that occupied this city block from 1917 until it was razed in 2011. This plot of land has been divided into lots for Habitat for Humanity and some homes have sprung up to partially obscure the view.

Train was headed back from Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, IC 3115 and CN 9530. The Non-mountable Curb Island (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) has been installed recently as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. The parking lot of the historic Flanagan's Stop & Shop is partially visible to the right, if you appreciate an excellent selection of liquor, beer, and wine.

IC 3115 and CN 9530
Title:  IC 3115 and CN 9530
Description:  A CN local passes the former N. Superior St. grade crossing (just out-of-frame to right) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 21 Jul. '18. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. A pair of tall buildings loom above the second locomotive. The nearest and shorter one is AT&T Communications & Network Services, 221 W. Washington St. The taller one is the former Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) building, 222 W. College Ave., erected in 1952. Since AAL’s successor vacated the building, it has become home to multiple tenants, and it has been bestowed with the unimaginative moniker of The 222 Building. There used to be six tracks here, only the main line remains.

IC 3115 and GTW 4927
Title:  IC 3115 and GTW 4927
Description:  A CN local bisects the Appvion, historically Appleton Papers, mill and approaches N. Mead St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 6 Aug. '18. Founded as Appleton Coated Paper Co. at Appleton, WI on 13 May 1907. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. (NCR) in ’70. NCR combined Appleton Coated Paper Co., Combined Locks Paper Co., and Roaring Spring mill (in PA), to form Appleton Papers, Inc. in ’71. NCR sold Appleton Papers to B.A.T Industries (British American Tobacco Co.) in ’78. The company endured an assortment of foreign owners for the next 23 years. Appleton Papers transferred the assets and operations of its coated free sheet business, primarily the former Combined Locks Paper Co. mill, to a new legal entity, Appleton Coated, LLC, in ’00. Appleton Papers employees completed an $810 million buyout of the company on 9 Nov. ‘01. Appleton Papers changed its trade name and logo to Appleton in ’03. The name changed to Appvion, Inc., on 13 May ’13. It was sold to Franklin Advisers, Inc., et al., on 13 Jun. ’18, and the greedy, corporate scumbags were permitted to cheat the employees out of $40 million in retirement benefits. Train was heading back to Neenah after working Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna.

IC 3115
Title:  IC 3115
Description:  A CN local pauses near the former C&NW depot at Kaukauna, WI on 9 Aug. '18. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St., to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current, gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. It became known as the north side depot after 1890, when the MLS&W, later C&NW, built their large, ornate depot south of the Fox River. That depot disappeared many years ago. Local had just finished servicing the Expera Specialty Solutions (originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co.) paper mill and was waiting for a through freight to pass before heading back to Neenah. Train had two locomotives, IC 3115 and GTW 4927.

Title:  IC 3115 and CN 4721
Description:  A CN local bisects the intersection of S. Outagamie St. and W. Melvin St. (background left) and approaches W. 2nd St. while headed southwest past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Aug. '18. Train was headed back from Little Chute and Kaukauna and was slowing to halt in front of the depot/yard office. The rails leading to the left are the yard lead. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, stands at right. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. By ’67 it was the Junction Tavern, owned by at least two different people until at least ‘71. At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett).
