SOO Waupaca, WI Freight House
Title:  SOO Waupaca, WI Freight House
Description:  CN local passes behind the former SOO freight house as it approaches Oak St./Hwy. E while servicing Waupaca Foundry, Plant 1, out of frame to left, at Waupaca, WI on 4 Apr. '15. This is the 2nd WC/SOO freight house at Waupaca. It was built in early 1949 after the original freight house burned down in Nov. '48. The bowling alley next door to the south caught fire and the flames spread to the freight house. The original 1871 WC passenger depot was converted into a freight house after the 2nd depot was completed in Apr. ‘81. The 1st freight house had been moved from its original location to the current freight house location ca. 1901, when the 2nd depot was moved to the west side of Guard St., now Oak St.

IC 9625
Title:  IC 9625
Description:  CN local momentarily fouls Washington St. in order to service U.S. Paper Mills Corp. at Menasha, WI on 11 Oct. '15. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. The dark tan brick structure rising behind the paper mill is the stage house of the Brin Theater, which will hopefully see restoration someday. I am pretty sure it is the last surviving classic theater in the Fox Cities.

IC 9625
Title:  IC 9625
Description:  CN local crosses the frozen Mud Creek via a former SOO timber trestle bridge as it hauls 5 cars southwest at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 11 Feb. '17. The longer, center span consists of several steel I-beams; the remainder of the bridge is constructed of wood. I was standing on the ice under the former C&NW bridge, also in use by CN. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Shawano and Black Creek. Hiking parallel to the tracks through the Guckenburg-Sturm Preserve and then onto the frozen Mud Creek helps one avoid trespassing.

Title:  IC 9625 and CN 9486
Description:  CN local bisects the intersection of N. Appleton St. and W. North St./W. Packard St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 1 Sep. '17. Train was headed back to Neenah after servicing Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna. Where this solitary track is, there were once seven. The C&NW freight house used to stand on the other side of the tracks. As you can see, I was zoomed in one increment too far.

IC 9625
Title:  IC 9625
Description:  CN local crosses Towmen Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, WI on 12 Oct. '17. Shawano Junction is in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16). This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The tracks in the foreground are the crossover to the former C&NW rails. Train was returning from Shawano. MillTown Paper, Inc., 1286 Ehlers Rd., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), a rail customer, is in the background.

Title:  CSX 5319, CN 8897, IC 9625
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing as it heads north past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 14 Mar. '20. Train had three locomotives CSX 5319, CN 8897, IC 9625. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

IC 9625
Title:  IC 9625
Description:  A CN local sets out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 26 Jul. '20. Usually they stay on the main line and pass in front of the depot/yard office while making their setout, but today they chose to pass behind it. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond in front of where the depot/yard office sits, about where the sidewalk leading to the front door crosses the tracks, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW.

The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Title:  IC 9625
Description:  A CN local crosses Washington St. after servicing Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.), 388 Ahnaip St., via former C&NW rails on Doty Island at Menasha, WI, on 14 Apr. '21. The awesome, old building to the left is currently home to Expert Driveline Truck & Auto Repair, 216 Washington St. Built in '35 for Verbrick's Service Co., Norbert F. Verbrick, proprietor; it operated as such until '84. Designed by Henry Auler in the Tudor Revival style, it and the adjacent building at 214 Washington St. (originally offices of Northwest Electrolyte and Engraving, also designed by Auler in the Tudor Revival style) were erected on what had long been a stave yard for the Menasha Wooden Ware Co. Wayne's Towing and Service occupied this building for quite a while between the original and current occupants. It is difficult to imagine that then Washington Ave. was once also Hwy. 41, until that highway was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities in the 1940s.
