Description:
A CN local parallels Thilmany Rd. as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. The small shed at left looks like a scale house. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in ‘89 after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners and renamed it. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers.

GTW 6226 and CN 9530
Description:
A CN local crosses what used to be Stribley Rd. as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill via former C&NW railr at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. At right, the mill's Rail King Model RK330 G4 Mobile Railcar Mover will soon extract a cut of cars which will be taken away by the local. This portion of what used to be Stribley Rd. is now just a driveway to the trailer storage lot. It appears.that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper"& Flouring Mill) in 2013 (behind me).

A CN local approaches Depot St. while headed southwest via former C&NW rails at Little Chute, WI on 18 Jun. '14. The facility at right is Crystal Print, Inc., 500 Hart Ct., an active rail customer. I believe the depot stood on the north side of the tracks (left). In 1889 it stood on the south side (right) and what was then the north end of Verstegen St. The street was re-named Wilson St. at some point and what was once the north end of it is now part of the Crystal Print property.

Description:
A CN local pulls 19 cars across the mouth of the Neenah Slough at the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 2 Oct. '18. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-appreciated brush clearing along the tracks here, so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

Description:
A CN local passes Milepost 214 and approaches N. State St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails along the backside of College Ave. at Appleton, WI on 14 Oct. '18. There are two milepost markers, a newer one on a fence post next to the telephone pole, and an older one halfway up the telephone pole. The large brick building partially visible above the locomotive is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building was built between 1895 and '01 by the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper. The company was founded in '93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

GTW 4907 and CN 9530
Description:
A CN local parallels Union St. and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Jan. '20. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1881 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

CN 9530
Description:
CN 9530 rests on the former C&NW bridge over the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River at Neenah, WI, on 10 Sep. '20. The local is preparing to depart after servicing Neenah Paper, 135 N. Commercial St., via a remnant of the former C&NW main line. The company was founded at Neenah, WI, as the Patten Paper Co. by Azel Wilder Patten in 1873. Samuel A. Cook and Frank T. Russell purchased the Neenah mill in early ‘85 and incorporated as the Neenah Paper Co., with A. W. Patten as president. The company was later taken over by the Kimberly family. Some references state they acquired a controlling interest in ’93, others state John A. Kimberly, Jr., bought the mill outright in 1900. Neenah Paper Co. officially became a division of Kimberly-Clark Corp. in ‘56, and operated as such until it was spun off in 2004.

CN 9530
Description:
CN 9530 passes the historic, but unfortunately idled, Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St., at Menasha, WI, on 10 Sep. '20. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16, after 134 years of providing quality paper products and living-wage jobs. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert paper mill, it was built along the Fox River Navigation Canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). The company was a partnership of George A. Whiting and Theodore and William Gilbert. It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in 1886, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers. The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in 1911. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. The 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company in Mar. '14; the name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. It did not last long under the new owner. The George A. Whiting Airport, at the intersection of Airport Rd. and Appleton Rd. in Menasha, WI, was named in his honor because he donated $5,000 to construct the facility ca. the '20s. Reportedly, it was "Wisconsin’s finest and busiest airport" in the '30s. When the government decreed that there could be only 1 airmail port per county, they chose the airfield at Oshkosh, WI. The George A. Whiting Airport soon faded into history, except for the hanger, currently home to Kitz & Pfeil Ace Hardware. These rails were laid by the WC ca. 1872-4 to form a connection from the C&NW main line to the M&N, which the WC leased effective 30 Nov. '73. According to History of the Wisconsin Central, 1941, this stretch was constructed after the lease, so probably that winter or early in 1874. However, a map of Menasha dated 1872 depicts a similar connecting track, but located farther east and connecting to the C&NW bridge.

CN 9530
Description:
A CN train crosses Garfield Ave. as it works the northwest end of the former C&NW yard on Doty Island at Menasha, WI, on 18 May '23. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., stands at left. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of '16, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hardworking Americans by moving production out-of-state. Now it is just another warehouse.

Description:
CN 9673 and CN 9530 work the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 18 Feb. '24. In the background, we can see evidence of continued expansion of Galloway Co., 601 S. Commercial St. (an active rail customer). This view would have been prevented by the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:
A CN train crosses W. 2nd St. as it sets out cars at the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 18 Mar. '23. The train continued on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. The FV&LS depot is partially visible to the left. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible to the right. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

Description:
A CN train passes the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, depot as it sets out cars at Appleton Junction, WI, on 18 Mar. '23. The train continued on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond right about where the second locomotive rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible to the left is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Description:
A CN train parallels Union St. and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it departs the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Mar. '23. The train was heading to Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

A CN train crosses S. Mason St. while headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 31 Dec. '23. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I have discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the left (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. You can also see that the bridge abutments and piers were designed to support two tracks, but I don't believe this area was ever double-tracked.

CN local assembles its train of 34 cars at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 May '16. I believe they were preparing to head toward Manitowoc, WI. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the owners didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.
