Not a great day to be the train crewman who had to hang on to the last boxcar for the 2-mile shove from the remnants of the wye, the temp. was around -8 and windchill around -20 to -30.

CN local approaches Washington St. as it emerges from U.S. Paper Mills Corp., 69 Washington St., at Menasha, WI on 8 Nov. '17. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small industrial island for many years.

Description:
A CN local returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 20 May '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

A CN local approaches Towmen Rd. as it prepares to transition from the former C&NW rails to the former SOO rails (in the foreground) at Shawano Junction, WI on 22 May '18. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna.

It was awesome to see a former MILW caboose on former MILW rails. A CN local passes Dura-Fibre as it heads north via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 24 Jun. '18. Organized as the National Tractor & Machinery Co. at Chicago in 1916 (some references state ’18). They reorganized as the Uncle Sam Tractor and Machinery Co. ca. Mar. ’18 and moved to Menasha, WI ca. Feb. ‘19. They constructed a new 60’ x 125’ factory and 25’ x 40’ office building at 344 6th St. and erected 2 additions in ’20, with further expansion in ’22. The company reorganized as Wisconsin Automotive Corp. ca. ’23 in order to add automobiles to its line of products, particularly the Harris Six. They went out of business sometime between ’24 and ’28. The Neenah Shoe Co. occupied the plant in ’28. The Wisconsin Container Corp. was organized ca. ’31 to manufacture solid fiber and corrugated containers at this facility. The company was acquired by Menasha Corp. ca. ’69 and became their Solid Fibre Division. On 8 Feb. ’73, Menasha Corp. was granted a trademark for their “Grain-tainer” fiberboard grain doors for boxcars, but I’m not positive if they were made here or at another Menasha Corp. facility. Menasha Corp. sold the facility in ’04 and the name was changed to Dura-Fibre at some point.

A CN local backs along what used to be the south leg of a wye along the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 24 Jun. '18. Local has just pulled off of what was the west leg of the wye, after picking up a couple of boxcars from LSC Communications, Inc. (formerly RR Donnelley, originally Banta Corp.). They are preparing to pick up the remainder of their train, which they dropped on the south leg of the wye before heading for LSC Communications. The crude railing in the foreground marks the spot where a spur used to cross Tayco St. to serve what is now the Essity tissue mill. The mill dates to 1915 and was named Wisconsin Tissue Mills for the majority of its existence. It was a family-owned operation until 1977, when it became a corporate trading card. SCA bought it in 2001, they are the fourth corporation to control it in the last 41 years. They re-named their paper division Essity (a feeble combination of ‘essential’ and ‘necessity’) on 14 Jun. '17.

Description:
A CN local crosses the North Channel (Menasha Channel) of the Fox River via the former joint MILW/SOO bridge at Menasha, WI on 24 Jun. '18. Train was returning to Neenah after working Menasha and points beyond. This perspective would have only been obtainable with a boat, until the new Loop the Lake bridge opened to the public (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Neenah was held 23 Jun. '18). I was thrilled that I was able to shoot a train during my first visit to the new bridge. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., Menasha, WI, can be seen on the south bank of the river in the background. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of '16, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hard working Americans by moving production out-of-state. The Coveris facility, historically Marathon Corp. (originally Menasha Printing & Carton Co.), 271 River St., Menasha, WI, is partially visible on the north bank of the river at left. The piers supporting the former C&NW bridge (also in use by CN) are partially visible under this bridge.

A CN local crosses Black Otter Creek via the former C&NW bridge as it heads northwest with 9 cars at Town of Hortonia, Outagamie Co., WI on 3 Feb. '19. The bridge was built by the American Bridge Co. of New York in 1909. Black Otter Lake is on the other side of the bridge. The land to the left of the bridge on the far side of the tracks is in Hortonville, on this side of the tracks is the Town of Hortonia. The land on both sides of the tracks to the right of the bridge is in the Town of Hortonia.

The local power rests in front of the depot/yard office at the CN, former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 22 Mar. '19. I was excited to see a pair of Geeps parked here, because it has been a while since they needed two units stationed here. My excitement was short-lived, within a few days there was only one unit stationed here again. The locomotives rest on the yard lead. The north leg of the wye can be seen on this side of the locomotives.

A CN local prepares to service Menasha Packaging, 1645 Bergstrom Rd., (out-of-frame to left) via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '19. There are two large manufacturing facilities next door to each other here, out-of-frame to left. Both are currently Menasha Packaging facilities, owned by Menasha Corp., whose new corporate headquarters stands just to the south. The southernmost was built by Menasha Corp. in '64 after a devastating fire destroyed most of their historic downtown Menasha facility. The northernmost was built by Bergstrom Paper in the '60s. The overgrown loading dock could be used to load and unload railroad freight cars, but hasn't for many years. I used to play on that loading dock when I was a child. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16). The former C&NW rails, also in use by CN, are in the foreground. The Great Northern Corp. facility is partially visible in the background at left. They have a spur, but have not received rail service for quite a while.

The beige facility at right is Voith (a.k.a. Voith Paper Fabric & Roll Systems, Inc., or Voith Paper Rolls Central, Inc., et al.), 401 Byrd Ave. They don't currently benefit from rail service.

The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Arrowhead Park is a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye.

The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously. Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., is partially visible in the background at left, at the opposite end of the yard.

The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, Neenah, WI 54956, stands in the background. Plexus stands on the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. Some people like the style of this new building, I do not. Looking southwest from the new Loop-the-Lake bridge (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Menasha was held 23 Jun. '18). The pair of new bridges are part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities.

A CN local crosses Garfield Ave. as it heads north via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 5 Sep. '19. The former Mondi Akrosil, LLC, facility, 206 Garfield Ave., is partially visible at left. Mondi moved the jobs to Pleasant Prairie, WI, circa '12. Originally Edgewater Paper Co., founded in 1917, which specialized in silicone coated release paper. It was purchased by Akrosil Corp., a holding company, in '69 but didn't change the name to Akrosil until Apr. '74. The Hammermill Paper Co. purchased Akrosil ca. '75, but apparently did not change the name. The facility operated as International Paper-Akrosil after International purchased Hammermill in '86. International sold some of its holdings, including this facility, to Kohlberg & Co., LLC, another holding company, in Jun. '05. Mondi Packaging, based in Vienna, Austria, purchased Akrosil in Jan. '06. There are remnants of a spur on the west side of the facility, but it has not received rail service for a long time. It appears to possibly be used for storage or warehousing.

A CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it starts to transition from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 20 Sep. '19. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

A CN local bisects the intersection of N. Appleton St. and W. Packard St./W. North St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 23 Sep. '19. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be at least five tracks crossing N. Appleton St., only the main line remains. The C&NW freight house stood just out-of-frame to the right, a team track remained for quite a while after the building was removed. The C&NW's downtown passenger depot, one of three in Appleton, would be visible to the left of the lead locomotive if it still stood.
