GTW 6228 and GTW 6221
Title:  GTW 6228 and GTW 6221
Description:  CN local hauls 23 cars northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction on a fog-shrouded 23 Nov. '14. Train was destined for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW mainline through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

Title:  GTW 4912 and GTW 6221
Description:  A pair of CN GP38-2s, GTW 4912 and GTW 6221, work in the fog at the south end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Dec. '14. GTW 4912 was sorting cars and GTW 6221 was preparing to service several former C&NW customers along a remnant of that fallen flag’s main line.

GTW 6221
Title:  GTW 6221
Description:  CN local momentarily fouls Racine Rd. in order to service Orbis, out of frame to right, via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 19 Dec. '14. The road is the dividing line for this portion of the often convoluted border between the Town of Menasha and the City of Menasha, so the locomotive and I were in the Town while most of the train was in the City.

GTW 6221
Title:  GTW 6221
Description:  CN local switches Orbis via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 19 Dec. '14. Orbis, a subsidiary of Menasha Corp., produces reusable plastic containers, pallets, dunnage and bulk systems. The MILW rails used to go past the tan building, background left, and into Appleton, but they now end about a 1/2-mile short of that building.

Title:  GTW 6221
Description:  CN local fouls Henry St. as it services Galloway Company, Inc. (out of frame to right), via a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Neenah, WI on 31 Dec. '14. It seemed odd that the signals were not operating for some reason.

GTW 6221 and EJ&E 663
Title:  GTW 6221 and EJ&E 663
Description:  CN local parallels Thilmany Rd. and a sharp bend in the frigid Fox River as it prepares to service Expera Specialty Solutions (formerly Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co., from 1883 until 26 Jun. '13) via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 4 Jan. '15. Until a couple of years ago, the old Thilmany mill would have loomed behind any train traversing these rails; the current, newer, mill looms out of frame to the right.

GTW 6221 and EJ&E 663
Title:  GTW 6221 and EJ&E 663
Description:  CN local slowly crawls across the former C&NW bridge over the frigid Fox River as it prepares to service Expera Specialty Solutions mill (formerly Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co., from 1883 until 26 Jun. '13) at Kaukauna, WI on 4 Jan. '15. Railroad bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. A portion of the old Thilmany mill, saved from the wrecking ball, is visible behind the locomotives. The current, newer, mill looms out of frame to the right. Kaukauna’s Veterans Memorial Bridge, the vertical lift bridge, reflects the last rays of the setting sun behind the remnants of the old mill.

GTW 6228 and GTW 6221
Title:  GTW 6228 and GTW 6221
Description:  CN local passes Milepost 214 and approaches State St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails along the backside of College Ave. at Appleton, WI on 19 Oct. '15. The large brick building behind the locomotive is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building originally housed the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper, founded in 1893 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. Samuel's brothers Louis J. and Harry M. later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and also serviced the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse that stood where Walgreen's parking lot is now. That spur included a switchback to service J. Fountain Lumber Co., which stood north of the main line on the west side of State St., just out of frame to right.

Title:  CN 4711 and GTW 6221
Description:  Some flatcars allow a partial view of some local power resting in front of the yard office at the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 26 Mar. '16. There was another GTW geep parked here, of course it moved out as I walked down the sidewalk to get the perspective I wanted. I think they saw me coming.

GTW 4620, GTW 6221, CN 9601
Title:  GTW 4620, GTW 6221, CN 9601
Description:  CN local assembles its train of 34 cars at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 May '16. I believe they were preparing to head toward Manitowoc, WI. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the owners didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:  CN local parallels 4th St. and approaches De Pere St. (the current street signs have been lazily bastardized to Depere St.) as it traverses the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI with 34 cars on 15 May '16. I believe they were headed for Manitowoc, WI. The sun's location was less-than-ideal, but I wanted to capture a train with 3 locomotives in this yard because it doesn't seem to happen very often.

GTW 6221 and C&NW Neenah-Menasha, WI Depot
Title:  GTW 6221 and C&NW Neenah-Menasha, WI Depot
Description:  CN local passes the former C&NW Neenah-Menasha depot as it backs through the remnants of the C&NW Neenah-Menasha yard at Neenah, WI on 5 Jun. '16. The depot was built in 1893 to replace the original ca. 1861 depot. It was restored in 1994 and is currently home to Gries Architectural Group, Inc., and Sturtevant & Associates, LLC, an insurance firm. While quite rusty, the metal C&NW sign still adorns the trackside gable above the arched window. The original C&NW Neenah depot, built ca. 1861, was located near Galloway Co., 601 S Commercial St. The depot was later moved behind the Jersild Knitting Co., 333 N. Commercial St (about 400-500 feet out of frame to the left). It was razed after new depot was completed. The border between the Twin Cities of Neenah and Menasha bisects the yard about 200 feet north of the depot, out of frame to the right.
