Title:  GTW 5856 and GTW 4912
Description:  CN local crosses Olde Oneida St. at Mile Post 120 as it pulls 10 cars westward through the Flats via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 26 Mar. '15. Train was heading back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks and had two locomotives, Grand Trunk Western. The train is traversing what used to be a 6-track yard decades ago. In 2014 the last remnant of the yard, a passing siding, was pulled up. The C&NW depot stood where the row of trees is, lower right. The MILW had a small yard off to the right, their depot stood in the grassy area at the middle of the right edge of photograph.

Title:  GTW 4912
Description:  CN local crosses Millview Dr. as it nears the Yard Limit of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Jun. '15. An Affinity clinic is partially visible on the left, behind the train. It occupies part of the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The metal structure over the train is a remnant of the steam pipes that used to connect the paper mill to the defunct and partially demolished Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant), behind me.

CN 9455 and GTW 4912
Title:  CN 9455 and GTW 4912
Description:  After dropping their train at the far southwestern end of the yard, CN local returns to the northeastern end of the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 27 Jul. '15. Local had 2 locomotives as they returned to the yard after working Kimberly and Combined Locks, but they left IC 3102 with the rest of the train at the far end of the yard and are returning to this end with only CN 9455. It looks like GTW 4912 will be joining CN 9455 for a while. The yard office is partially visible at left.

Title:  GTW 4912 and IC 9612
Description:  CN local approaches the W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 overpass as it heads south via former SOO rails with 8 cars at Appleton, WI on 20 Aug. '16. The remnants of the SOO yard are partially visible on the other side of the train. The building on the left, now owned by St. Vincent de Paul, is a lumber shed from the former Stock Lumber, originally the site of Lieber Lumber. The building in the background is Warehouse Specialists, Inc., a periodic rail customer. Train was returning from Shawano and had two locomotives, GTW 4912 and IC 9612. I was hoping to get closer to the apex of the overpass, but the train beat me to it.

Title:  GTW 4912
Description:  GTW 4912 works the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 15 May '20. In the background, under the Main St. overpass, a local waits to proceed to Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The building at left, 716 Harrison St., still used by Neenah Foundry, I believe, is in the process of being spruced up with a fresh coat of paint and some new doors. Union St. can be seen to the left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

Title:  GTW 4912
Description:  A CN local traverses the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 24 Jun. '20. The local was trying to sneak off to Menasha while I was preoccupied with the through freight traversing the west leg of the wye on the right. The local is passing Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill, lies in the foreground. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye, which is hidden by vegetation. The Main St. overpass can be seen to the right.

Description:  A CN local crosses Washington St. as it prepares to service Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.) via former C&NW rails on Doty Island at Menasha, WI, on 24 Jun. '20. The awesome, old building partially visible to the left is currently home to Expert Driveline Truck & Auto Repair, 216 Washington St. Built in '35 for Verbrick's Service Co., Norbert F. Verbrick, proprietor; it operated as such until '84. Designed by Henry Auler in the Tudor Revival style, it and the adjacent building at 214 Washington St. (originally offices of Northwest Electrolyte and Engraving, also designed by Auler in the Tudor Revival style) were erected on what had long been a stave yard for the Menasha Wooden Ware Co. Wayne's Towing and Service occupied this building for quite a while between the original and current occupants. Glass Nickel Pizza, 217 Washington St., purveyors of some mighty tasty pizza, can be seen to the right. I'm not sure of the previous occupants of the building. There used to be a Clark station at that address. It is difficult to imagine that then Washington Ave. was once also Hwy. 41, until that highway was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities in the 1940s.

The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Sadly, there are no longer any mills to be seen along Millview Dr. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) stood just out-of-frame to the right, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. I was standing where the P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill had stood for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. '22. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna, and had two locomotives. The local is transitioning from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The telephone pole to the left stands along an abandoned portion of the C&NW right-of-way.

Description:  A CN local, with a friendly engineer, emerges from behind the now idled Clearwater Paper as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 10 Apr. '22. The local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), closed the mill in Jul. '21. It was purchased by KK Integrated Logistics ca. 12 Jan. '22. A new tenant is supposed to be moving into this portion of facility this month. I'm not sure who owns or occupies the blue building to the left, which used to receive rail service but hasn't for some time.

GTW 4912 and GTW 5846
Title:  GTW 4912 and GTW 5846
Description:  Appleton, WI A CN local pauses in front of the depot/yard office at the FV&LS (or FOXY), former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 17 Apr. '22. Local was setting out cars before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond right about where the rear truck of the lead locomotive rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible to the left is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Title:  GTW 4912 and GTW 5846
Description:  A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it departs the FV&LS (or FOXY), former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 17 Apr. '22. Local set out cars before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible to the right. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

GTW 4912 and GTW 5846
Title:  GTW 4912 and GTW 5846
Description:  A CN local crosses S. Mason St. while headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 17 Apr. '22. Local was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I have discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. You can also see that the bridge abutments and piers were designed to support two tracks, but I don't believe this area was ever double-tracked.

GTW 4912 and GTW 5846
Title:  GTW 4912 and GTW 5846
Description:  A CN local passes the former C&NW depot at Kaukauna, WI, on 17 Apr. '22. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St., to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current, gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. It was once known as the north side depot, as opposed to the MLS&W south side depot. That large, ornate depot disappeared many years ago. I couldn't shoot through the fence at this angle, so I had to hold my camera above the fence and spray and pray.
