Description:  CN through freight parallels Harrison St. and approaches Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 16 Feb. '18. Train had three locomotives, CN 8908 and CN 2558 pulling, as well as CN 8006 mid-train. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, is visible at right. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 loom in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. I am curious to learn where the new turnout (stacked in pieces between the tracks) will be installed (a 2nd new turnout was recently unloaded near this one).

CN 2562 and CN 5778
Title:  CN 2562 and CN 5778
Description:  CN container train crosses the new CN bascule bridge over the mouth of the Fox River and passes the depot/yard office as it heads south through the former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 23 Jul. '15. The bridge was completed in Aug. '13 to replace the 1899 C&NW swing bridge. The taller building behind, north, of the depot/yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, more plain structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some old references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh.

Description:  An unusual pair of CN through freights rest on former C&NW main line and siding at Stroebe, WI on 3 Feb. '18. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). Train at left had two locomotives, BNSF 4526 and CN 2588. Train at right had two locomotives, CN 2562 and CN 2283. Adding to the unusualness, a pair of BNSF units were parked on the crossover from the former SOO rails to the C&NW rails at the northeast end of Stroebe siding.

CN 2562 and CN 2283
Title:  CN 2562 and CN 2283
Description:  CN through freight heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line (now relegated to a passing siding) at Neenah, WI on 3 Feb. '18. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The former SOO main line, also in use by CN, is in the foreground. I had photographed this same train at Stroebe, WI two hours earlier. I am curious to learn where the new turnout (stacked in pieces between the tracks) will be installed.

CN 5673 and CN 2562
Title:  CN 5673 and CN 2562
Description:  A CN through freight passes the depot/yard office and approaches W. 2nd St. as it heads northeast past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 12 Sep. '19. The white building beyond the train is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St., Appleton, WI. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

CN 2568, CN 2431, BCOL 4611
Title:  CN 2568, CN 2431, BCOL 4611
Description:  A CN passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing (marked by the guardrail in the shadows at left) and parallels Union St. as it heads south at north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 12 Sep. '17. Train had three locomotives, CN 2568, CN 2431, BCOL 4611. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The white building behind the train is what remains of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility at 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while.

CN 2569 and BNSF 4403
Title:  CN 2569 and BNSF 4403
Description:  A CN ballast train (Herzog ballast cars) approaches S. Mason St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 7 Nov. '18. The old, seemingly idle, industrial facility partially visible at left used to receive rail service, many years ago. The facility at 1215-1225 W. Spencer St., Appleton, WI, dates to at least the ‘50s. It was home to the John Krogh Supply Co. (a.k.a. John Krogh Wholesale Co.). They went out of business in early ‘67 and the Arrow Moving & Storage Co. moved into the facility. Signs indicate that Miller Electric and Earthkote International, Inc., where more recent occupants.

Title:  CN 2570 and CN 8906
Description:  A CN container train crosses Viaduct Rd. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Van Dyne, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May '15. There used to be four sets of tracks at this grade crossing, now there are two. The former SOO main line is still active, out of frame to the left, only a few scraps of their passing siding that crossed this road remain. The Wisconsin Power & Light tracks crossed this road out of frame to the right and ran along the other side of the Community AG Services, Inc., feed mill.

Description:  A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Apr. '19. Train had four locomotives, CN 2600, CN 2572, CN 5763, and GTW 5950. I’m curious to learn why the reporting marks have been removed from GTW 5950 (sometime between Apr. '11 and Jan. '15 according to photographs on this site). Who currently owns it? The lead locomotive is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Eggers Industries, originally Hardwood Products Co., 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left.

Description:  CN unit train of tank cars parallels Broad St. and approaches E. I've passed this grade crossing countless times, but never attempted to shoot a train here, so I never noticed the C&NW sign before. I love the interesting and unique ampersand the C&NW occasionally used. I must attempt to catch a train here again when the sign is not backlit. The former C&NW freight house is partially visible in the background (to the left of the newer WC 'No Trespassing' sign).

NS 8110 and CN 2577
Title:  NS 8110 and CN 2577
Description:  CN unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers splits Broad St. and approaches Ceape Ave. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 7 Apr. '18. Train had two locomotives, NS 8110 and CN 2577. The interesting and historic brick industrial facility at 32-36 Broad St., was erected by Oshkosh’s J. A. Day & Co. in 1870. The flour mill was built for George M. Wakefield, et al., to replace the earlier Oshkosh City Flouring Mills, which stood here until destroyed by fire on 17 May ‘70. That large, old, wooden flour mill (built in ‘56) had been purchased by A. S. Trow & Co. in ‘69 (Wakefield was a partner in that company). When the current facility was completed in ‘70, it became known as the Wakefield Mill, or Wakefield’s Mill, operated by the Wakefield Bros. It continued to be referred to as the Wakefield Mill until at least ‘95, operated by Woodford, Foote & Co. in ‘76, and then Foote Bros. & Co. from about ‘77 until ‘90. It operated as the Foote-Cornish Milling Co. from ‘91 until about the end of 1900. There was an adjacent grain elevator during some of its service as a flour mill. It was home to the Wisconsin Pulp Plaster Co. circa ‘04-‘07. The Baker Paper Co., founded in ‘99, moved into the facility in Aug. ‘14 and owned it until ca. ‘93. It is currently home to the Oshkosh-area United Way, et al. Numerous windows have been added or modified over the years and a partial fourth story was removed at some point after ‘19. The 2013 bascule bridge over the Fox River, built to replace the 1899 swing bridge, is visible in the background.
