CN 2726 and CN 3020
Title:  CN 2726 and CN 3020
Description:  A CN container train parallels Union St. and approaches the Main St. overpass as it passes a halted through freight at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 Aug. '20. Container train had two locomotives, CN 2726 pulling and CN 3102 mid-train. Through freight had three locomotives, CN 3136 and CN 3875 pulling as well as CN 3020 mid-train. The parking lot in the background to the left was the site of the WC (later SOO) depot, built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. On the far side of Sherry St. stands the remnant of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while. To the left of that stands the historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 (construction commenced the previous year). It was briefly (ca. ‘93) known as the Northern Pacific Hotel, almost certainly a reference to the short-lived corporate relationship between the WC and NP railroads. It was owned by Ole M. Lyken by ’14; it was known as the Lyken Hotel ca. ‘20. Circa ‘23-‘24 it was a grocery store owned by Mrs. Mary E. Lyken, Ole’s widow. From at least ‘28 until ‘39, it was the Mayerl Grocery, owned by Mayme Mayerl. At some point it was turned into a tavern and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. Previous names of the bar include (in no particular order), Susie’s Trackside, Chesapeake Pub, Gigi’s, Mychal’s Bar (Mychal’s On Sherry Street), Sit and Sip Tavern, et al. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. The remnants of the foundation for the water tower or coaling tower can be seen at the lower right. I think this was the water tower, if so, the coaling tower stood about 70 feet to the south.

IC 2726
Title:  IC 2726
Description:  A CN container train passes Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, at Neenah, WI, on 24 Oct. '20. Train had two locomotives, IC 2726 pulling as well as CN 2689 pushing. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel along the other side of the train. The building in the background to the left was home to Plexus' Neenah Design Center, 55 Jewelers Park Dr., Neenah, WI. Erected in 1987 and expanded in 2000, it has stood vacant since 2017, when they decided they needed another new office building in downtown Neenah for some stupid reason. At least one tenant has occupied part of the building recently.

CN 2727 and CN 9673
Title:  CN 2727 and CN 9673
Description:  CN through freight approaches Stroebe Rd. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 21 Feb. '14. Through freight was headed from Stevens Point to Green Bay and had two locomotives, CN 2727 pulling and CN 9673 pushing. It was passing a CN local that was waiting to head to Appleton and points beyond, but the photos of the meet didn't turn out well.

BNSF 4087 and CN 5775
Title:  BNSF 4087 and CN 5775
Description:  A large CN through freight has taken the east leg of the wye and fouls Millview Dr. while setting out and picking up cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 5 Jan. '18. This train usually takes the west leg of the wye and fouls N. Lake St. while doing its work, but MoW crews were replacing a section of rail at that grade crossing at the time. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) loomed beyond the train, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13.

Description:  A trio of BNSF units lead a unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers across Dixie Rd., headed northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Town of Vinland, Winnebago Co., WI on 27 Jan. '18. Another unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers, led by a pair of BNSF units and a CN unit, waits to head the opposite direction from Dixie Siding, a remnant of the former C&NW main line. If I had known both trains were led by BNSF units, I would have attempted to capture a decent shot of the meet.

BNSF 4350, BNSF 8830, CN 5676
Title:  BNSF 4350, BNSF 8830, CN 5676
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads north past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 6 Feb. '19. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train to the right. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

BNSF 4626 and BNSF 7883
Title:  BNSF 4626 and BNSF 7883
Description:  A pair of BNSF units were oddly parked on the crossover from the former SOO rails (background) to the former C&NW rails (foreground) along W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. at Stroebe, WI on 3 Feb. '18 (both sets of rails in use by CN). Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). A through freight, led by another BNSF unit and a CN unit, rests at the southwest end of the former C&NW siding at Stroebe (out-of-frame to the left). Adding to the unusualness, a second through freight had been halted next to the other one up until a few minutes earlier, with its tail end extending back to here.

Description:  CN ore train crosses the Menasha Channel of the Fox River via former joint MILW/ SOO bridge and approaches the junction with the former C&NW mainline as it crawls through Menasha, WI pulling 215 ore cars on 5 May '14. It pulled up as far as the swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal, halted, then reversed to back into the former SOO yard at Neenah. Train had four locomotives, CN 5542, BCOL 4651, CN 8821, and CN 2007. I am left to wonder if there has ever been this much horsepower on this line.

Description:  CN through freight crosses Arndt St. and parallels S. Broadway and the Fox River as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Green Bay, WI on 21 Jul. '14. It is also crossing the turnout for the north leg of the wye that leads to the remnants of former GB&W Norwood Yard. It has just pulled out of the former C&NW/GB&W yards at North Green Bay. I don't know its ultimate destination, but it had loaded TTPX wood chip cars which will end up in Neenah eventually.

Description:  A CN through freight rests along Union St. at the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 10 Apr. '20. Train had five locomotives, CN 2246, IC 2718, CN 8002, BCOL 4652, CN 5261. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

Title:  BCOL 4654, CN 5789, CN 5367
Description:  CN through freight approaches Towmen Rd. and the turnout for which this location is named as it head northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction in the Town of Menasha, WI on 6 Mar. '16. When the train hits the turnout it will transition over to the C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW mainline through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.
