Description:
A CN local passes the Main St. overpass, passes Arrowhead Park, and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 17 Nov. '19. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are partially visible at right. The stack of railroad ties rests atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

Description:
A CN container train and a CN local meet along Union St. at the former Caroline St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Nov. '19. Container train had two locomotives, CN 2263 and CN 5788. Local was preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna with 26 cars and had two locomotives, CN 9530 and CN 9402. To the right stand some brand new signals. The installation commenced ca. 25 Apr. '20 and was completed ca. 3 Jul. '20. The new signals were activated and the old signals removed between 10 and 22 Aug. '21. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

CN 9424 and the Falconer
Description:
This falconer seems to think, erroneously, obviously, that the railroad tracks are a good place to practice his unique craft. Meanwhile, behind him, a CN local approaches the Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 overpass as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 14 Jan. '17. Train took the siding to wait for a northbound local and had one locomotive, CN 9424. The original right of way used to pass where I was standing. The curve in the foreground was installed to cross over to the former SOO rails when portions of the C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were pulled up. The overpass is the approach to the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) over Little Lake Butte des Morts and is part of the interchange of Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway) and Hwy. 41.

Description:
CN local emerges from behind All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2, and approaches S. Perkins St. as it heads northwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 16 Feb. '17. Train was moving unusually slow and preparing to set out a string of cars in the yard at Appleton Junction. There is a spur along the south side of the building, the wheel stops are behind the pile of snow, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to create employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc. It is currently a warehouse for All About Packaging, Inc., whose main facility is a couple of blocks away on W. Everett St. Founded at Appleton, WI in '96, they specialize in thermoformed packaging.

CN local approaches Depot St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Little Chute, WI on 18 Feb. '17. The depot stood just out of frame to the left. Station signs were erected after the depot was removed but they were removed between 22 and 29 Mar. '14 when Cross Country Clearing, LLC removed some of the old telephone poles along the right-of-way. I thought they would put the station signs up again, but they have not.

'17. Looking northeast along Thilmany Rd. Thilmany Rd. used to continue past me to the right to connect to Catherine St., now it curves to the left and connects to what was Stribley Rd. to connect to Catherine St. It appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter. Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the restoration of the original Thilmany mill (behind me) and the creation of its new parking lot.

CN local crosses what used to be Stribley Rd. and parallels Thilmany Rd. and the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 20 Jun. '17. From its founding in 1883 until 26 Jun. '13, the Kaukauna paper mill was Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers). What used to be Stribley Rd. is now just a driveway to the trailer storage lot. It appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter. Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the restoration of the original Thilmany mill (out of frame to left) and the creation of its new parking lot.

A trio of CN locomotives rest in front of the depot/yard office at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 10 Mar. '19. IC 9565 and CN 9424 rest on the main line. I'm not sure of their origin or destination, but it’s odd to see two locomotives passing through sans freight cars. IC 3120, the local power, rests on the yard lead. The north leg of the wye is hidden beneath the snow on this side of IC 3120.

A CN local, with at least 25 cars, parallels Harrison St. as it shoves southwest from the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 18 Mar. '19. Train was preparing to service Menasha Packaging, 1645 Bergstrom Rd., and had one locomotive, CN 9424. A remnant of the former C&NW main line runs parallel on the other side of the train. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background at left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

The local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16). The former SOO rails run parallel on the other side of the trains. Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W.

The local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna. County Materials Corp. is partially visible beyond the train. They do not currently benefit from rail service. It was Schultz Concrete Products, Inc., from at least '63 to '95.

Description:
CN local parallels N. Lake St. and passes the ongoing reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 23 Dec. '17. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange, but the ongoing, extensive expansion and reconstruction will make it a full interchange as well as increase traffic capacity. Train was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna.

CN 9452
Description:
A CN local, with a friendly engineer, passes the historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. complex, partially visible in background, as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 23 Aug. '13. Train was enroute to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Eagle Manufacturing Co., makers of gasoline engines, tractors, and other farm implements, was incorporated in Dec. 1888 in the Flats at Appleton, WI. They began construction of this new factory in 1904, after they outgrew their original facility. It shared that block with the Ideal Lumber and Coal Co. and C. D. Rowell & Son, Manufacturing, makers of car movers. Eagle erected several additions over the years until it occupied most of the block. The historic factory was demolished in late-2014/early-2015 and some wonderful new apartments or condominiums are in the final stage of construction as of Aug. ’15. There used to be a diamond on the opposite side of the locomotive, where two spurs intersected to service several industries in that block.

CN local halted on former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, WI on 24 Jul. '14. They were headed for Appleton Junction, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and will soon take the track to the left which connects to the former C&NW main line. The track on the right heads to Shawano via SOO rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW mainline through Menasha and Neenah were removed and this turnout was installed.
