GTW 5856 and IC 9602
Title:  GTW 5856 and IC 9602
Description:  CN local crosses Weimar Ct. as it approaches Telulah Park with 23 cars via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 11 Mar. ’14. Train was returning to the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction after servicing industries in Combined Locks, Kimberly, and Appleton. Usually all 3 members of the crew ride in cab of the lead locomotive, but occasionally, like today, one of them rides in the trailing locomotive. Maybe he wants a little more room to stretch out once in a while.

Title:  SOO 736, GTW 5856, and IC 9602
Description:  CN local passes SOO 736 as the former hauls 23 cars through Telulah Park via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 11 Mar. ’14. Local was headed back to the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction after servicing industries in Combined Locks, Kimberly, and Appleton. SOO 736 was donated to the City by John Mason Balliet. He also paid for construction of a temporary spur off the main line to get the locomotive into the park, as well as a fence erected later to deter vandals. The locomotive arrived on 14 Nov. '59. When asked why he did it, he said, "so that children would know what [a steam engine] looked like." He owned an insurance agency, but railroads were a hobby. He served as a director for Missouri Pacific, Michigan Central, Lake Erie & Eastern, and Pittsburgh & Lake Erie railroads.

Description:  CN local extracts 5 boxcars from the WSI/Appvion warehouse via former C&NW rails at Milepost 118 at Appleton, WI on 26 Mar. '14. WSI/Appvion is out of frame to the right, reached by a sharp S-curve that really makes the flanges squeal. The pair of tan buildings in the photo belong to someone else; they have a spur but don't appear to receive rail service. They spotted 2 new boxcars at the warehouse, meaning the train would pull 29 cars the rest of the way to the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction after servicing Kimberly, Combined Locks, and Appleton.

Title:  GTW 5856 and IC 9617
Description:  A CN local approaches the former C&NW swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal at Lock No. 3 (out of frame to right) as it hauls 37 cars westward through 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 4 Aug. '14. Train had just descended the grade from Telulah Park on its way back to the yard at Appleton Junction after servicing Kimberly and Combined Locks. This view was captured from the abandoned former C&NW fixed bridge over the Fox River. The active line was originally laid by the MLS&W. I used to think that the abandoned bridge was former MILW, but I have since learned that it was C&NW. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

Description:  CN local approaches S. Vulcan St. after spotting a boxcar for the Neenah Paper mill (formerly Fox River Paper Co.) on former C&NW rails in the Flats in Appleton, WI on 6 Aug. ’14. The small white, building (background right) is a replica of the Vulcan Street Plant, the country's first Edison hydroelectric central station designed to serve both residential and commercial customers. It began operation 25 Nov. 1882 and this replica stands at the approximate location of the original. This generator was identical to its more famous twin, which began generating electricity 3/4-mile upstream on 30 Sep. ’82 (that one serving just commercial customers).

Description:  CN local crosses Olde Oneida St. at Mile Post 120 as it pulls 10 cars westward through the Flats via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 26 Mar. '15. Train was heading back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks and had two locomotives, Grand Trunk Western. The train is traversing what used to be a 6-track yard decades ago. In 2014 the last remnant of the yard, a passing siding, was pulled up. The C&NW depot stood where the row of trees is, lower right. The MILW had a small yard off to the right, their depot stood in the grassy area at the middle of the right edge of photograph.

Description:  CN local approaches N. State St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 25 Sep. '16. Train was pulled by a pair of GTW locomotives, GTW 4911 and GTW 5856. This was a chance encounter, otherwise I would have attempted to obtain a better vantage point to capture this pair of locomotives in their original owner's paint scheme. If you happen to be an aficionado of topnotch liquor, beer, and wine, the parking lot of the historic Flanagan's Stop and Shop is on the opposite side of the train.

Title:  CN 9473, GTW 5856 and GTW 4908
Description:  With the CN local power for Appleton parked in the foreground, a CN local from Neenah backs behind the depot/yard office while setting out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 9 Oct. '16. It is unusual for this local to take the track behind the depot/yard office (the branch to Kimberly and Combined Locks) when they stop in Appleton, they almost always use the main line. They will continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna when they are done here. Appleton power is CN 9473. Neenah power is GTW 5856 and GTW 4908.

Description:  CN local crawls through the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 (probably the busiest intersection, consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 9 Oct. '16. The crossing signals were malfunctioning, so a crew member had to flag the crossing (he is visible background right). The large brick building in the background is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building originally housed the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper, founded in 1893 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. Samuel's brothers Louis J. and Harry M. later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north (opposite) side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and serviced the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse that stood where the Walgreen's parking lot is now. Train was on its way to Little Chute and Kaukauna.
