Description: |
A CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 3 Apr. '21. The local, headed for Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna, is transitioning to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. To the right stand some brand new signals. The installation commenced ca. 25 Apr. '20 and was completed ca. 3 Jul. '20. The new signals were activated and the old signals removed between 10 and 22 Aug. '21. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains. |

A CN local prepares to spot a centerbeam flatcar on the team track at the former SOO yard at Appleton, WI, on 23 Jun. '21. A Warehouse Specialists, Inc., facility stands to the right. It used to periodically receive boxcars; I haven't seen any there since '14. |

A CN local switches Presto Products, 670 N. Perkins St., Appleton, WI (physically located in Town of Grand Chute) adjacent to the former SOO yard at Appleton, WI, on 23 Jun. '21. The station sign can be seen to the left of the locomotive. The depot stood a few blocks to the east, on a long spur that ran from the main line and along W. College Ave. into downtown Appleton. The depot was razed in 1970 and the spur was pulled up a decade or two after that (although the spur is still depicted on CN's interactive system map on their website). The main line forms the border between the Town of Grand Chute and the City of Appleton for this portion of that often ridiculously convoluted border. The facility partially visible to the right, currently home to Byproduct Recycling, has a pair of indoor spurs, but the turnout which once connected those spurs to the active rails is absent. |

A CN local parallels the Newberry Trail (originally Newberry St.), and prepares to cross it, as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' with 11 cars via the former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 24 Jun. '21. Local was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’ Many years ago it was referred to 'The Water Power.' |
