IC 3120 |
Description: |
A CN local crosses Kaukauna St. and is about to disappear behind the former Noffke Lumber facility as it heads southwest via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 17 Feb. '19. It was a chance encounter. If I had been able to park a few seconds sooner, I would have been able to capture the business end of the locomotive before it started to become obscured. |

Description: |
A trio of CN locomotives rest in front of the depot/yard office at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 10 Mar. '19. IC 9565 and CN 9424 rest on the main line. I'm not sure of their origin or destination, but it’s odd to see two locomotives passing through sans freight cars. IC 3120, the local power, rests on the yard lead. The north leg of the wye is hidden beneath the snow on this side of IC 3120. |

The local power rests in front of the depot/yard office at the CN, former C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 22 Mar. '19. I was excited to see a pair of Geeps parked here, because it has been a while since they needed two units stationed here. My excitement was short-lived, within a few days there was only one unit stationed here again. The locomotives rest on the yard lead. The north leg of thg wye can be seen on this side of the locomotives. |

IC 3120 |
Description: |
A CN local services the east side of the Midwest Paper Group mill at Combined Locks, WI, via former C&NW rails on 27 Apr. '19. Founded in 1889 (some references state 1892) as the Combined Locks Paper Co., it became Combined Paper Mills, Inc. in ‘46 after it purchased a paper mill in PA. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. in ‘69, it was merged with Appleton Coated Paper Co. in ‘71 to form Appleton Papers, Inc. Commonly known as Appleton Papers Locks Mill, it has been controlled by several different domestic and foreign owners over the years. It was separated from Appleton Papers in ‘00 and became Appleton Coated, LLC. Ten members of the mill’s management purchased the facility from France-based Sequana SA on 19 Dec. ’14. Forced into receivership, it was purchased by scrap dealers, Industrial Assets Corp. and Maynards Industries USA, in Oct. ’17. They bought it to shut it down and gut it. By some miracle, they changed their mind and restarted the paper machines. The facility was re-named Midwest Paper Group ca. 19 Apr. ’18. The local was preparing to extract 5 boxcars from the shipping dock. There are flashing blue lights on both sides of the driveway (at left) and a sign that says "Train in the area when flashing, proceed with caution". |

Description: |
A CN train approaches Towmen Rd., as it transitions from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 26 Jun. '22. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The facility visible in the background is Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (WSI), 1222 Ehlers Rd., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing). It was used by Essity/SCA Tissue for quite a while. In 2019 the sign was changed to Clearwater Paper; they have since gone out-of-business. This facility has not received rail service for quite a while, but could be served via former SOO rails. |
