BCOL 4652 and CN 5408
Description:
CN through freight crosses Arndt St. and parallels S. Broadway aRd the Fox River as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Green Bay, WI on 21 Jul. '14. It is also crossing the turnout for the north leg of the wye that leads to the remnants of former GB&W Norwood Yard. It has just pulled out of the former C&NW/GB&W yards at North Green Bay. I don't know its ultimate destination, but it had loaded TTPX wood chip cars which will end up in Neenah eventually.

CN 5414, BCOL 4652, CN 2578, CN 4711
Description:
A CN through freight crosses Towmen Rd., as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, WI on 15 Feb. '20. Train had four locomotives, CN 5414, BCOL 4652, CN 2578, CN 4711. The train is transitioning from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

CN 5419
Description:
While my attention was focused on the unique MoW cars depicted in the previous photographs, this CN train snuck up behind me and halted along Harrison St. at the former Caroline St. grade crossing at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 20 Feb. '21. The Main St. overpass can be seen in the background to the left. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN 2404 and CN 5425
Description:
A CN container train splits Broad St. and approaches Ceape Ave. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 30 Apr. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2404 and CN 5425. The interesting and historic brick industrial facility at 32-36 Broad St., was erected by Oshkosh’s J. A. Day & Co. in 1870. The flour mill was built for George M. Wakefield, et al., to replace the earlier Oshkosh City Flouring Mills, which stood here until destroyed by fire on 17 May ‘70. That large, old, wooden flour mill (built in ‘56) had been purchased by A. S. Trow & Co. in ‘69 (Wakefield was a partner in that company). When the current facility was completed in ‘70, it became known as the Wakefield Mill, or Wakefield’s Mill, operated by the Wakefield Bros. It continued to be referred to as the Wakefield Mill until at least ‘95, operated by Woodford, Foote & Co. in ‘76, and then Foote Bros. & Co. from about ‘77 until ‘90. It operated as the Foote-Cornish Milling Co. from ‘91 until about the end of 1900. There was an adjacent grain elevator during some of its service as a flour mill. It was home to the Wisconsin Pulp Plaster Co. circa ‘04-‘07. The Baker Paper Co., founded in ‘99, moved into the facility in Aug. ‘14 and owned it until ca. ‘93. It is currently home to the Oshkosh-area United Way, et al. Numerous windows have been added or modified over the years and a partial fourth story was removed at some point after ‘19. In the foreground, a lonely reminder of when the north bank of the Fox River teemed with industry and commerce. I didn't know this section of track was still here, until a kindred railfan recently posted a photograph of it (thank you Richard H.). The 2013 bascule bridge over the Fox River, built to replace the 1899 swing bridge, is partially visible background right.

CN 5754, CN 5747 and CN 5429
Description:
CN train sorts cars while another unit rests at the former C&NW and SOO yards at Wisconsin Rapids, WI on 4 Jul. '17. They had parallel yards here, approximately 4 tracks each ca. 1973. Both roads used to cross the GB&W just out of frame to the left. A junction of the MILW and GB&W was not far behind me. This portion of Wisconsin Rapids, formerly Grand Rapids, was known as West Rapids, shortened to Westrap on some old maps and railroad documents. I'm curious to learn where the old signal relay case at right used to rest. Milepost CM 412.75 at Hwy. K obviously, but there is no Hwy. K near here. The Hwy. K grade crossing at Bateman in Eau Claire Co., WI is a possibility.

CN 2159, BCOL 4625, CN 5431, CN 8862
Description:
CN through freight has halted adjacent to Harrison St., split its train, and is now shoving 13 cars into the south end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 4 Jul. ’14. I presume they were going to drop off one or more of those cars before recoupling to the remainder of their train, which included a string of over 60 loaded Herzog ballast cars, and continuing on their way. I was not able to stay long enough to find out for sure.

Description:
A CN through freight crosses the Wolf River via the former SOO bridge as it heads northwest at Gills Landing, WI, on 20 Feb. '21. The bridge was built as a swing bridge in 1894. A significant mechanical failure left the pivot inoperable from 2003 until the fall of 2011, when it was converted into a vertical lift bridge. According to bridgehunter.com, it "is likely the only vertical-lift bridge in the world with a center lift tower".

Description:
A CN through freight rests on the former C&NW siding along W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. at Stroebe, WI on 13 Jul. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2267 and CN 5456. This was quite an unusual train, at least to me; the front half was loaded autoracks and back half was tank cars. I've never seen autoracks along here before. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel to the right. The facility partially visible in the background at right is home to SERVPRO of Appleton, 2235 Northern Rd., Appleton, WI. It has a spur but it does not appear to benefit from rail service. I don't think the occupant before them, Cag Pellets, received rail service either. The facility was once home to Viking Steel, 2225-2235 Northern Rd., Appleton, WI.

IC 3115 and CN 5463
Description:
A CN through freight bisects the intersection of W. Franklin St. and N. Division St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 19 Mar. '22. Hoersch Home Appliance, 218 N. Division St., has been in business since 1945, previously known as Home Appliance Co. until at least '67. Previously located at 225 W. College Ave. ca. '50s, later located at 307 W. College Ave., until it moved to this location ca. '82. The former Furnishings Unlimited warehouse stands on the other side of the tracks at right. The historic address of the facility is 323 N. Clark St. The current business address is 311 N. Superior St.; the address probably changed after an addition was added to the northeast end of the facility after 1981. The building was likely erected by the Cohen Bros. Fruit Co., after a natural gas explosion destroyed their previous facility ca. 10 Sep. 1948 (or was the damaged building repaired?). Furnishings Unlimited acquired the facility in or prior to 1981. The building had painted signs for Cohen Bros. and Sunkist until at least 1981. The facility used to receive rail service, but it hasn't for quite some time. The most recent occupant is, or was, Appleton Furniture Direct.

Description:
A CN through freight parallels Union St. as it shoves a cut of cars into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 12 Feb. '22. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

After a brief halt, CN unit train of tank cars crosses N. Lake St., past Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 6 Aug. '17. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. This facility is serviced by CN via former SOO rails.

Description:
CN through freight crosses the Wolf River via the former SOO bridge as it heads southeast at Gills Landing, WI on 12 Aug. '14.

A haggard Warbonnet leads an odd and interesting pair of leased locomotives pulling a CN through freight as it approached the former N. Union St. grade crossing as it headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 19 Sep. '18. I don't see SOO rolling through often enough these days, even though the C&NW/SOO junction is only about 2 miles out-of-frame to the left. In the background are Union Square Apartments, 500 E. Winnebago St., Appleton, WI. They were erected in '15 on the site of the historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. complex, between E. Winnebago St., N. Union St., E. Commercial St., and behind a row of houses on N. Drew St. Eagle Manufacturing Co., makers of gasoline engines, tractors, and other farm implements, was incorporated in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI in Dec. 1888. When they outgrew that facility, they began construction of their factory here in 1904. Over the years it grew until it occupied most of the block. Before its expansion, it shared the block with the Ideal Lumber and Coal Co. to the east. Further east of that was C. D. Rowell & Son, Manufacturing, makers of car movers, fronting N. Union St. between E. Winnebago St. and E. Commercial St. All 3 facilities were served by C&NW. There was a diamond in the middle of the east end of E. Winnebago St., just west of N. Union St., near the small clump of trees on the right, for at least two spurs leading into that block. I feel that the uniqueness of the lashup overrides the sub-standard focus of the photograph (I wish it had been a sunnier day).
