CN 4711
Title:  CN 4711
Description:  CN local hauls five cars southward past the former SOO yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 21 Feb. '15. This small yard used to serve as an interchange for the SOO and C&NW. Later it served as an intermodal yard for the WC. The trucks of the locomotive and freight cars are not visible because the train is descending a slight grade which will allow it to pass under the former C&NW tracks that run to New London, while the yard tracks maintain their level grade and connect with the former C&NW yard. Train was returning to Neenah after working Shawano.

Title:  CN 4711 and GTW 6221
Description:  Some flatcars allow a partial view of some local power resting in front of the yard office at the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 26 Mar. '16. There was another GTW geep parked here, of course it moved out as I walked down the sidewalk to get the perspective I wanted. I think they saw me coming.

CN 4704 and CN 4711
Title:  CN 4704 and CN 4711
Description:  CN local, headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna, approaches the former N. Union St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 5 Jun. '16. They are passing some new apartments or condominiums erected last year at the former site of the historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. complex between E. Winnebago St., N. Union St., E. Commercial St., and behind a row of houses on N. Drew St. Eagle Manufacturing, makers of gasoline engines, tractors, and other farm implements, was incorporated in the Flats at Appleton, WI in Dec. 1888. When they outgrew that facility, they began construction of a new factory here in ’04. Over the years it grew until it occupied most of the block. Before its expansion it shared the block with the Ideal Lumber and Coal Co. to the east. Further east of that was C. D. Rowell & Son, Manufacturing, makers of car movers, fronting N. Union St. between E. Winnebago St. and E. Commercial St. All 3 facilities were served by C&NW. There was a diamond in the middle of the east end of E. Winnebago St., just west of N. Union St., near the small clump of trees on the right, for at least two spurs leading into that block.

CN 9513 and CN 4711
Title:  CN 9513 and CN 4711
Description:  CN local crosses the turnout for the north leg of the wye as it traverses the east leg of the wye at north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Aug ’16. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties in the foreground rest atop the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Plexus and the Affinity clinic in the background were erected on part of the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The steel skeleton of Neenah's latest repugnant, modern office building rises background right. There is not much room for historic buildings or classic architecture in Future Neenah. I believe the train was preparing to head toward Manitowoc.

Title:  CN 4711
Description:  A CN local crosses the North Channel (Menasha Channel) of the Fox River via the former joint MILW/SOO bridge as it heads southwest at Menasha, WI on 8 Mar. '19. In the foreground, a flock of common goldeneyes has been kicked up by the passing train. This perspective would have only been obtainable with a boat, until the new Loop the Lake bridge opened to the public on 23 Jun. '18. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., can be seen on the south bank of the river in the background. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of '16, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hard working Americans by moving production out-of-state. The TC Transcontinental, Inc., facility, historically Marathon Corp. (originally Menasha Printing & Carton Co.), 271 River St., is partially visible on the north bank of the river at left. The piers supporting the former C&NW bridge (also in use by CN) are partially visible under this bridge.

Title:  CN 4711
Description:  A CN local crosses the former joint MILW/SOO bridge over the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River at Neenah, WI on 8 Mar. '19. Looking northeast from the new Loop-the-Lake bridge (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Menasha was held 23 Jun. '18). The pair of new bridges are part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. This new view of the railroad bridge is interesting, but I will miss the once panoramic view of this bridge from the river bank.

IC 9568, CN 4711, CN 4705
Title:  IC 9568, CN 4711, CN 4705
Description:  A pair of CN locals face-off on the yard lead at the north end of the former SOO yard along Union St. at the former Adams St. grade crossing at Neenah, WI on 4 Jul. '19. Near local was waiting to return to the yard from Menasha and had one locomotive, IC 9568. Far local, throwing a little smoke, was preparing to cross over to the passing siding and head toward Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna, and had two locomotives, CN 4711 and CN 4705. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard (a few blocks to the south) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913. I'm curious to learn what Washington did to piss off the "great" City of Neenah.

CN 4711 and CN 4705
Title:  CN 4711 and CN 4705
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 4 Jul. '19. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, CN 4711 and CN 4705. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

EJE 703, CN 4711 and CN 4705
Title:  EJE 703, CN 4711 and CN 4705
Description:  While EJE 703 sorts cars, a local passes by at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 27 Jul. '19. Local had two locomotives, CN 4711 and CN 4705. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Title:  CN 5414, BCOL 4652, CN 2578, CN 4711
Description:  A CN through freight crosses Towmen Rd., as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, WI on 15 Feb. '20. Train had four locomotives, CN 5414, BCOL 4652, CN 2578, CN 4711. The train is transitioning from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.
