IC 9601 & DMIR C-44
Title:  IC 9601 & DMIR C-44
Description:  CN local passes the former SOO freight house and a recently added wooden DM&IR caboose, DMIR C-44, at Waupaca, WI on 4 Jun. '15. The caboose was built by predecessor D&IR in 1906 and rebuilt in 1911. The freight house is the 2nd WC/SOO freight house at Waupaca. It was built in early 1949 after the original freight house burned down in Nov. '48.

Title:  IC 3137 and IC 9601
Description:  CN local crawls onto the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services Expera Specialty Solutions mill (out of frame to left) at Kaukauna, WI on 9 Jun. '15. Up until a couple of years ago, a train here would have been hidden behind the old Thilmany mill, that pile of rubble on the right is remnants of the old mill. From its founding in 1883 until 26 Jun. '13, the Kaukauna paper mill was Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers). One of the locks on the Fox River Navigation Canal is in the foreground and is being restored.

IC 9601, IC 3137, and C&NW Kaukauna, WI Depot
Title:  IC 9601, IC 3137, and C&NW Kaukauna, WI Depot
Description:  CN local, with a friendly engineer, passes the south side of the former C&NW depot at Kaukauna, WI on 9 Jun. '15. Local had just completed servicing Expera Specialty Solutions, originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. Designed in the Art Moderne style and built in 1947, it originally had a flat roof. The current gabled roof was added at some point after 1983.

IC 9601
Title:  IC 9601
Description:  CN local approaches Towmen Rd. as it hauls 34 cars southwest via former C&NW rails at Shawano Junction in the Town of Menasha, WI on 24 Oct. '15. I'm not sure of the train's origin or destination, but it did not appear to be one of the normal locals. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW mainline through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails, the rails in the foreground.

Title:  IC 9601
Description:  A CN local passes the former N. Superior St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 19 May '18. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. This grade crossing was removed ca. the 3rd week of Nov. '13. The large building in the background at left is the former H. C. Prange Co. (a.k.a. Prange's) department store, 126 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI. The drab, utilitarian structure was erected ca. 1961, replacing the historic and beautiful Pettibone-Peabody Co. department store (H. C. Prange purchased the company in ‘46). It is currently home to City Hall and a children's museum. A pair of tall buildings loom above the locomotive. The nearest and shorter one is AT&T Communications & Network Services, 221 W. Washington St., Appleton, WI. The taller one is the former Aid Association of Lutherans (AAL) building, 222 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI, erected in 1952. After AAL’s successor vacated the building, it has become home to multiple tenants, and it has been bestowed with the unimaginative moniker of The 222 Building.

IC 9601 and CN 4721
Title:  IC 9601 and CN 4721
Description:  A CN local returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 17 Jun. '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

IC 9601
Title:  IC 9601
Description:  A CN local transitions from the west leg of the wye to the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Apr. '19. I am left to wonder why they were compelled to navigate the wye in order to back into the yard. The locomotive is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Eggers Industries, originally Hardwood Products Co., 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16)), an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background at right.

Description:  A CN local traverses the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Apr. '19. I am left to wonder why they were compelled to navigate the wye in order to back into the yard. Beyond the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. The dump truck and bulldozer in the background rest where a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16.

IC 9601
Title:  IC 9601
Description:  A CN local crosses one of four diamonds which remain on this mostly industrial island (formed when the Fox River navigation canal was excavated) as it heads southwest via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI, on 30 Mar. '20. TC Transcontinental, Inc., 271 River St., an active rail customer, can be seen in the background. The site was originally home to the Menasha Printing & Carton Company, formed in 1917 through the merger of two older, neighboring companies, the Menasha Printing Co. and the Menasha Carton Co. Acquired by Marathon Paper (later Marathon Corp.) in '27, it became the Marathon Div. of American Can Co. in '57. James River Corp. acquired American Can in '82. At some point it was acquired by Bemis Co., who sold it to Exopack Holding Corp. (Sun Capital Partners, Inc.) in '10. At some point it became Coveris, until its purchase by TC Transcontinental, Inc. in '18. Looking southeast from River St. The street now jogs to the left, but it used to continue straight ahead here. At some point in the late 1990s or early 2000s, part of River St. was vacated and re-routed to facilitate expansion of this facility.

Description:  A CN local crosses Edna Ave. and approaches High St. as it heads southwest via the former joint MILW/SOO rails on Doty Island at Neenah, WI on 30 Mar. '20. Local was headed back to the yard in Neenah and had one locomotive, IC 9601. Levenhagen Oil Corp., 321 High St., can be seen to the left. Previously known as the Standard Oil Depot, the facility dates to at least 1893. The facility used to receive rail service, but has not for some time. It is hard to believe that there used to be four tracks crossing these two streets.

Description:  A CN local rests on former C&NW rails at the Hwy. G overpass at Snells, WI, on 9 Apr. '22. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel on this side of the train.

Description:  A CN local crosses Thilmany Rd. as it services the Ahlstrom-Munksjö NA Specialty Solutions, LLC, Thilmany Mill at Kaukauna, WI, at 1603 hours on 24 Apr. '22. The paper mill was founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883. It became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in 1889, after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. It was acquired by Finland’s Ahlstrom-Munksjö on 10 Oct. ’18. The train is crossing the new, rerouted portion of Thilmany Rd. and the locomotive is about to cross what was the original route of Thilmany Rd. It appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (behind me to the left). The remnants of pavement to the right was once Thilmany Rd.

IC 9602 and Grand GTW 4620
Title:  IC 9602 and Grand GTW 4620
Description:  CN local shoves a string of cars along former C&NW rails to service Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (the tan building partially visible on the left) and Imerys USA, Inc. (the blue, truncated, triangular shape partially visible behind the tree line, background left) in Combined Locks, WI on 18 Feb. '14 (Imerys is just across the border in Kimberly). The tracks are quite sinuous here; they run on the south bank of the Fox River. I didn't notice the Bald Eagle until I was reviewing the photos.

Title:  IC 9602 and GTW 4620
Description:  CN local passes L. C. Siding enroute to service Appleton Coated paper mill via former C&NW rails in Combined Locks, WI on 18 Feb. '14. I have long thought the station sign is wrong, but I haven’t found definitive proof yet. I presume that L. C. is short for Little Chute, which is on the opposite side of the river. Seems like the sign should be C. L. Siding, for Combined Locks. Does anyone have an old C&NW timetable handy?

Description:  CN local pulls 26 cars westward over Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) via a former FRVR bridge as it crosses the border from Kimberly into Appleton, WI on 26 Mar. '14. There was no bridge here until the expressway was constructed in the early '90s and opened to traffic Sep. '93. Train was heading back to the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction after servicing Kimberly and Combined Locks.

Title:  GTW 5856 and IC 9602
Description:  CN local extracts 5 boxcars from the WSI/Appvion warehouse via former C&NW rails at Milepost 118 at Appleton, WI on 26 Mar. '14. WSI/Appvion is out of frame to the right, reached by a sharp S-curve that really makes the flanges squeal. The pair of tan buildings in the photo belong to someone else; they have a spur but don't appear to receive rail service. They spotted 2 new boxcars at the warehouse, meaning the train would pull 29 cars the rest of the way to the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction after servicing Kimberly, Combined Locks, and Appleton.

The Rogers' home made history on 30 Sep. 1882 when it became the first private residence to be supplied with electricity from the country's first hydroelectric central power station using the Edison system. Title:  IC 9602 and IC 3129
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 18 Jan. '20. Local was preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

Description:  A CN local passes the historic Dale feed mill and approaches Wisconsin Rd. (formerly Main St.)/Hwy. 96 as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Dale, WI, on 20 Feb. '21. Historically Main St. (as listed on CN's signal relay case), some of the street signs have been changed to Wisconsin Rd. (it shows up as Wisconsin Ave. on the satellite map). Hwy. 96 used to be Hwy. 10, until the latter's expansion and relocation ca. '97. The Dale feed mill was built between 1889 and 1908, when it was Northern Grain Co. By ’10 it was the Western Elevator Co., Western Grain Co. in some references. It was the Steffen’s Elevator Co. from ca. ’21 until at least ’68, it was purchased by John H. Steffens and later run by his sons. It was Dale Feed Service from ca. ’73 until at least ’81. It has been home to Earth Sense Energy Systems, Inc., W9715 State Rd. 96, Dale, WI, since ’96.

Title:  IC 9603 and IC 3115
Description:  A CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI, (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 3 Jul. '21. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and is about to transition to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.
