GTW 4924
Title:  GTW 4924
Description:  CN local pulls 4 cars westward through the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 24 Mar. '14. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

Title:  GTW 4924
Description:  CN local passes behind Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St., Menasha, WI, via the remnants of the former C&NW mainline at Menasha, WI on 30 Apr. '14. They were pulling up to clear the turnout that will bring them back on the rails to the right. The remnants of a spur for Whiting Paper Co. are on the far right and the remnants of a spur for the idle Menasha Utilities plant are on the left. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert Paper mill, it was built along the canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in 1886, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers (who then founded a new paper company with their father and another brother). The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in 1911. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. The 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company to an employee in Mar. '14. The name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. The mill produced matte board, scrapbooking paper, high-end art paper, and its unique Kona Paper, made from recycled burlap coffee bean bags. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16, after 134 years of providing quality paper products. When the closure was announced, it was claimed the company could not maintain the sales volume needed to remain profitable, which seems to be the catch phrase of every 21st Century American corporation when they shut down any historic industrial facility.

GTW 4924 and IC 3110
Title:  GTW 4924 and IC 3110
Description:  A pair of CN locals meet at the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 30 Apr. '14. One, GTW 4924, was going to collect a string of gondolas full of old ties before heading back to Neenah. The other local, IC 3110, was likely coming from Hilbert. I can’t imagine there is this much activity in this small yard very often.

Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009.

Title:  GTW 4924
Description:  A CN local passes the former C&NW Neenah-Menasha depot as it serves a couple of customers on Doty Island at Neenah, WI on 22 Apr. '20. This C&NW Neenah-Menasha depot, 500 N. Commercial St., Neenah, WI, was opened on 2 October 1892, to replace the old depot which stood on the opposite side of Commercial St. The firm of Decker & Gindle had commenced construction in the fall of 1891, as soon as W. E. Wheeler of Menasha finished excavating the basement. The depot was designed by Charles Sumner Frost in the Victorian Romanesque style, or the Romanesque Revival style, depending on which reference you choose to believe. It was built with Duck Creek stone, Bayfield brown stone, and St. Louis brick, protected by a roof of black slate with copper trim, at a cost of approximately $30,000. The railroad closed the depot in the 1980s, and it stood vacant and unmaintained until 1991, when it was purchased by G-Group, Inc. Restoration was completed in 1994, and it is currently home to Gries Architectural Group, Inc., and Sturtevant & Associates, LLC. Many thanks to the late, great Larry Easton, from whose writings I obtained some of this valuable information. The border between the Twin Cities of Neenah and Menasha bisects the yard about 200 feet north of the depot.

Description:  A CN local traverses the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 15 May '20. The white building beyond the train is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. The interesting, old brick building to the left of that is currently occupied by Gord's Pub, 210 Main St. Unfortunately it was built in Neenah, WI, which means it will likely soon be destroyed to make way for some new, modern eyesore (there is no room for classic or historic architecture in Future Neenah). The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., can be seen in the background above that. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., Neenah, WI, 54956, is partially visible to the right of that. Looking south from Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. Some evidence of illegal dumping rests near the center of the scene.

Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993.
