IC 3129
Title:  IC 3129
Description:  CN Appleton based crew approaches S. Perkins St. as a Neenah based local passes on the main line while both head northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 May '16. The Neenah crew was slowing to halt on the main line to set out a string of cars before continuing on to service Little Chute and Kaukauna. The Appleton crew has just dropped their train (partially visible on the right) at the far southwestern end of the yard after completing their work in Appleton, Kimberly, and Combined Locks. The Neenah crew will pick up those cars later on their way back to Neenah.

GTW 5856, IC 3129, et al.
Title:  GTW 5856, IC 3129, et al.
Description:  One CN local waits behind the depot/yard office while another local passes in front of it at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 26 Oct. '18. The local at right is departing for Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, IC 3129 and IC 3138. The local at left, powered by GTW 5856, was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. There used to be a diamond under IC 3129, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, that line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building in the background is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St., Appleton, WI. That building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called the Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Train departed Appleton, WI with 20 cars, but dropped off 18 covered hoppers at Center Valley, WI. The building partially visible at right is the historic Frank Pure Food Co. sauerkraut factory, 304 W. Forest St. It was built by C. C. Lang & Son (a.k.a. C. C. Lang & Co.) in 1946 and purchased by Frank’s in ‘56. It was purchased by the Fremont Co. between ‘82 and ‘85. Sauerkraut production ceased ca. ‘93, when they closed the facility. It received rail service for much, if not all, of its use as canning plant for those 47 years. It was most recently occupied by Black Creek Auto Parts, LLC. Not sure what is going on there now..

IC 3129
Title:  IC 3129
Description:  A CN local crosses Peach Rd. as it transitions from the former SOO rails to a section of track which connects to a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI on 10 Nov. '18. Peach Rd. is now the northern terminus of the former SOO (originally W&N) main line that once ran from Neenah to Argonne (the small stack of ties rests upon the right-of-way which continued northward). This connector track was installed around the time that the C&NW main line was abandoned, to facilitate continued rail service for the nearby Shawano Paper Mill. There is a fair amount of flange squealing as the train traverses this nearly 180 degree arc with an approximately 700 ft. radius.

IC 3129
Title:  IC 3129
Description:  A CN local crosses Hwy. MM as it prepares to switch the Shawano Paper Mill (div. of Little Rapids Corp.) via former C&NW rails at West Shawano, Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI on 10 Nov. '18. Founded as the Wolf River Paper & Fiber Co. on 7 Feb. 1894, the name was changed to Shawano Paper Mills ca. Nov. ‘49. The name changed to Little Rapids Corp.-Shawano Mill in ‘93, but it is still commonly referred to as Shawano Paper Mill. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. That name still appears on some property records. The train is running on an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. It is an awesome bicycle ride, but I (obviously) would prefer to see trains running on it. The fence at right surrounds the paper mill's water treatment facility, which was built upon the former site of the Shawano Brick Yard (a.k.a. Larson Brick Yard). The brick yard, which had its own narrow gauge railway, produced fine white or cream colored brick from 1891 until 1946. The paper mill purchased the property at some point after the brick yard closed and eventually demolished the entire facility. The paper mill's historic office building was constructed in 1901 of brick from that yard.

Title:  IC 3129
Description:  A CN local parallels the Fox River and approaches the S. Memorial Dr. bridge as it descends the grade from the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, down into 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 18 Jun. '19. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. The Appleton Yacht Club and Lutz Park can be seen in the background. The former MILW right-of-way, granting it access to 'The Flats' from Menasha, runs along the opposite bank of the river. The line was abandoned in 1981 and the land has been reclaimed by nature, and the rich snobs who own the homes overlooking the river. About all that remains of this portion of that branch is one of the abutments for the MILW swing bridge that used to cross the river under the S. Memorial Dr. bridge. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

Local is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background. The MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893.

IC 9602 and IC 3129
Title:  IC 9602 and IC 3129
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 18 Jan. '20. Local was preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

Title:  IC 3129
Description:  IC 3129 works in the CN, former SOO yard at Menasha, WI, on 7 Sep. '20. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St.; they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI, in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as an adjacent one. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s (according to tax records, this facility was built in 1966), they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it. Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., is partially visible in the background, at the opposite end of the yard.
