IC 3107
Description:
CN local crosses N. Lake St. past Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 30 Jul. '17. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. This facility is serviced by CN via former SOO rails.

IC 3107
Description:
IC 3107 works the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 17 Sep. '17. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Some turnouts rest on the ground on this side of the fence, either old turnouts which were recently replaced, or new turnouts about to be installed.

Description:
A CN local approaches Medina Junction Rd. as it heads northwest past the Rat River Wildlife Area via former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI on 27 Sep. '17. Train was headed for Waupaca. This scene looks odd without the interesting, old telephone poles that stood along the far side of the tracks for 146 years, until they were removed between 4 and 18 Sep. '17.

IC 3107
Description:
CN local passes the Rat River Wildlife Area and approaches the junction with the former C&NW right-of-way, now the Wiouwash State Trail, as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI on 15 Oct. '17. Train was returning from Waupaca, WI. The clumps of trees to either side of the locomotive mark the former site of a steam locomotive servicing facility. If the direction of view in the photograph (http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/Content.aspx?dsNav=N:4294963828-4294963814&dsRecordDetails=R:IM24898) on the Wisconsin Historical Society website is labeled accurately, a coaling tower and other structures stood to the left of the train. A water tower and other structures stood to the right. Remnants of the foundations on the right side are still in place, remnants on the left side were demolished in May of this year.

Description:
A CN local approaches Bergstrom Rd. as it heads east via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 31 Mar. '18. Train has just finished servicing Menasha Packaging (out-of-frame to left). There are two large manufacturing facilities next door to each other here, out-of-frame to left. Both are currently Menasha Packaging facilities, owned by Menasha Corp., whose new corporate headquarters stands just to the south. The southernmost was built by Menasha Corp. in '64 after a devastating fire destroyed most of their historic downtown Menasha facility. The northernmost was built by Bergstrom Paper in the '60s.

Description:
CN local approaches Stroebe Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails with 14 cars at Stroebe, WI on 5 Apr. '18. Train was on its way back to Neenah from Shawano. Locomotive is passing an awesome, old, wooden crossbuck which guards the currently unused spur for Great Northern Corp. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). Wisely erring on the side of caution when they noticed the far signals activate, they realized that there was plenty of room to safely wait here until the local passed by. A CN local approaches the former W. 8th St. and S. Pierce Ave. grade crossings as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 6 May '18. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. The train would have been hidden behind the historic Pierce Manufacturing plant that occupied this city block from 1917 until it was razed in 2011. IC 3107
Description:
A CN local pulls 12 cars west through The Flats via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 12 May '18. Train was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. The bridge crosses the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River through the Flats. South Island St. (which I was standing on) used to run parallel to the north bank of the South Channel. Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and ‘57. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years. This remaining portion forms the confluence with a mill race which connects West’s Power Canal (a.k.a. West’s Canal, a.k.a. Grand Chute Island Canal) to the Fox River. Edward West bought Grand Chute Island and excavated the canal in 1870 to provide water power for the industries which were built soon after. Up until about 2010, everything beyond the train would have been obscured by the paper mill which stood there for over 100 years. The Kerwin Paper Co., a subsidiary of Riverside Paper Corp., closed in ‘05 or ’06. It was demolished in order to erect the hideous, modern apartment buildings, known as the Landing at Eagle Flats and Riverwalk Place, in ‘11-‘12 (both are just out-of-frame to the right). The white, concrete wall beyond the train is a remnant of the paper mill’s foundation. The bridge tender’s tower for the Lawe St. bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal can be seen near the center of the photograph. The recently restored lock tender’s house can be seen background right.

A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. while setting out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Dec. '18. Train will soon continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible beyond the train at left. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett).

Description:
A CN local approaches the station sign and S. Nash St./Hwy. M (originally Oshkosh St.) as it heads southeast with six cars via former C&NW rails at Hortonville, WI on 6 Jan. '19. I believe that the depot stood a little closer to S. Nash St./Hwy. M than the station sign currently does. It is difficult to believe that there used to be five tracks here. To the right stands the historic Peter Olk’s Elevator (a.k.a. Olk’s Elevator) at 136 W. Dewey St. The oldest part of the facility dates to at least 1894, when it was the W. L. Root Grain & Potato Warehouse. A 10,000-bushel elevator was added to the facility in 1908, about the time that Olk acquired it. A couple of other additions have been erected since then. Circa ‘10, Peter Olk was a “dealer in grain, flour, feed, salt, lime and cement.” In ‘34 the facility became the home of Schneider Multifeed (a purveyor of feed for livestock and pets), and operated as such until at least 2006. Black Otter Supply is the facility’s most recent, if not current, occupant (a bird seed store). Another historic facility is partially visible in the background. The Wisconsin Grain and Malt Co. also dates to at least 1894. It was later acquired by the Western Elevator Co. and became the Miller Grain & Fuel Co. in 1909.

Description:
A CN local passes United Cooperative (an active rail customer), N1868 Municipal Dr., and crosses Municipal Dr./Hwy. 76 as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Greenville Township, Outagamie Co., WI on 6 Jan. '19. Founded as Greenville Cooperative in 1931, it merged with United Cooperative in 2017. The historic Greenville House, a.k.a. Kronser Hotel & Saloon, is partially visible at the right. Built by Joseph A. Kronser in 1897, it is currently home to Greenville Station, with a first floor bar and a second floor resale store. Several references erroneously state that the building dates to 1887. The original hotel was erected in that year, but it burned down and the current facility was erected in its place. Some references also claim that the building has been called Greenville Station for over 100 years, but that too is an exaggeration. The depot, built in 1915 to replace the original (ca. 1876) depot, stood right about where that F-150 is parked.

Description:
An unusually small CN local pauses in front of the depot/yard office at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 7 Jun. '20. There used to be a diamond right about where the rear truck of IC 3108 is, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building behind the depot/yard office is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

GTW 4924 and IC 3110
Description:
A pair of CN locals meet at the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 30 Apr. '14. One, GTW 4924, was going to collect a string of gondolas full of old ties before heading back to Neenah. The other local, IC 3110, was likely coming from Hilbert. I can’t imagine there is this much activity in this small yard very often.

IC 3110
Description:
CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it extracts a string of boxcars from Clearwater Paper Corp. via former SOO rails at Town of Menasha, WI on 23 May ’14. Originally incorporated as Lakeside Paper Co. on 9 Nov. 1910, construction of the mill began in ’11, and paper production commenced on 12 Jun. ‘12. At some point they started to sell a large share of their book paper production to Sears, Roebuck & Co. for their catalogues. The mill was sold and re-incorporated as Lakeview Paper Co. on 9 Aug. ’20. Sears, Roebuck & Co. bought the facility ca. the mid- to late-‘20s. The mill was shut down on 1 Feb. ’29 after a boiler failure and Sears promptly sold it to the Canadian firm of Fraser Paper, Ltd. (which also produced book paper for Sears). Fraser did not hold it long, they sold it to Kimberly-Clark Corp. ca. Mar. ’29. Kimberly-Clark sold the facility to American Tissue Mills ca. Aug. ’96. The mill abruptly shut down on 6 Sep. ’01 due to American Tissue’s significant financial problems. The briefly idled mill was purchased by Cellu Tissue Corp. in ’02 and renamed Cellu Tissue Corp. - Neenah, commonly shortened to Cellu Tissue - Neenah. Cellu Tissue Corp. was acquired by Clearwater Paper Group in ’10. A map from 1955 shows 6 spurs to service this paper mill, now there are 2 and only this 1 appears to get regular use.

CN local momentarily fouls W. Prospect Ave./Hwy. BB while picking up a string of cars from the southwest end of the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on its way back to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 25 Apr. '16. The local is spanning 3 communities at once in a peculiar spot of the sometimes confusing local borders. This section of the road is the border separating the Town of Grand Chute, Outagamie Co., WI to the north (left) and the Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI to the south (right). The locomotives and the 1st freight car are in the Town of Menasha, the next 3-4 freight cars are in the Town of Grand Chute, and, thanks to an unnatural jog in the border, the remainder of the train, out of frame to the left, is in Appleton, WI.

CN local approaches the former Thilmany Rd. grade crossing and the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions (originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co.) paper mill at Kaukauna, WI on 28 Jan. '13. The train was too long to be shoved into the mill's stub yard all at once. This is the first half, the remainder of the train was still parked on the grade leading up to the main line for. Bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. Train had two locomotives Illinois Central IC 3110 and CN 4704. Thilmany Rd. used to run past me up to Catherine St., but the course of Thilmany Rd. and Stribley Rd. were altered during the restoration of the original Thilmany mill (out of frame to the left). The road now curves to the left, underneath the lead locomotive, and it appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter.
