Description:  CN local crosses a diamond as it heads southwest via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 3 Jul. '16. There are four diamonds in close proximity where the former MILW/SOO rails intersect with the former C&NW rails on this small industrial island, which was formed when the Fox River Navigation Canal (out of frame to the left) was excavated. The North Channel (Menasha Channel) of the Fox River is out of frame to the right.

Title:  GTW 4911 and CN 9473
Description:  A CN local passes the Appvion, originally Appleton Papers, mill and crosses E. Wisconsin Ave. via the former C&NW bridge as it heads northeast through Appleton, WI on 17 Sep. '16. I am surprised that the FRVR sign remains. It has been damaged due to vandalism; the sign on the other side is in better shape. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, GTW 4911 and CN 9473.

Title:  CN 9473, GTW 5856 and GTW 4908
Description:  With the CN local power for Appleton parked in the foreground, a CN local from Neenah backs behind the depot/yard office while setting out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 9 Oct. '16. It is unusual for this local to take the track behind the depot/yard office (the branch to Kimberly and Combined Locks) when they stop in Appleton, they almost always use the main line. They will continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna when they are done here. Appleton power is CN 9473. Neenah power is GTW 5856 and GTW 4908.

Title:  GTW 4917 and CN 9473
Description:  CN local crosses N. Oneida St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 13 Nov. '16. One of the C&NW's 3 Appleton depots stood to the left, on the south (right) side of the tracks between N. Appleton St. and N. Oneida St. The downtown depot closed ca. 1958 and passenger operations were concentrated at the Appleton Junction depot. The building in the background is Oneida Heights, an apartment complex for seniors. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

Title:  CN 4705 and CN 9473
Description:  CN local sorts cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 2 Jul. '17. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Part of the fence on this side of the tracks has been temporarily removed, they were preparing to replace some of the turnouts on this end of the yard.

Title:  CN 9473
Description:  A CN local works in the former SOO yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 29 Sep. '17. Local was servicing Presto Products Co., 670 N. Perkins St., Appleton, WI (physically located in Grand Chute, WI). The former SOO main line is hidden beyond the overgrowth at left and passes under the former C&NW main line about 400' behind me and to the left (southwest). The track running past me served as an interchange for the SOO and C&NW. The former C&NW yard is behind me. The SOO yard later served as an intermodal yard for the WC. The first turnout to the right leads to the last remaining diamond in Appleton (that I know of). The diamond forms the junction of 2 industrial spurs, neither of which, unfortunately, has seen a train for quite a few years. The second turnout to the right leads into the yard.

Title:  CN 9473
Description:  A CN local pauses on the north leg of the wye at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 29 Sep. '17. They have just pulled in from the track which connects the former SOO yard to this yard. They will now change direction to take the north leg far enough to clear the turnout which allow them to shove along the west leg of the wye so they can eventually spot their string of cars at the southwest end of the yard. The hi-rail MoW vehicle is CN or WC 177903. The tank cars are spotted for Quality Carriers, Inc., 700 S. Whitman Ave, Appleton, WI. They are located within the wye and transload materials from railroad tank cars, and the occasional covered hopper, to semi tank trailers.

Description:  A CN local crosses the Fox River pulling 13 boxcars via the former C&NW bridge in the Flats in Appleton, WI on 29 Sep. '17. It is actually two bridges side-by-side, the former MILW bridge is the nearest of the 2, its rails were pulled years ago. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. The Atlas Paper Co. mill, 425 W. Water St., is on the left. Completed in 1878 and expanded over the years, it eventually became part of the Kimberly-Clark Corp. (K-C). The mill ceased operation ca. 1999, the year K-C donated it to the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame. After some of the additions were razed, the Hall of Fame opened its new home and its interactive museum, the Paper Discovery Center, on 26 Feb. ’05.

Description:  A CN local prepares to spot a boxcar at Luvata (originally Valley Cast, Inc.), 553 Carter Ct., Kimberly, WI, via former C&NW rails at Kimberly, WI on 29 Sep. '17. Valley Cast, Inc. (formerly Valley Cast Wire Co., a division of Appleton Wire), built this facility in Kimberly in 1989 to supplement their facility at 908 N. Lawe St., Appleton, WI (currently known as Luvata Appleton). The boxcar about to be spotted is NADX 11089, formerly GB&W, possibly originally P&W. Description:  A CN local hauls 11 boxcars westward over Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) via the former FRVR bridge as it crosses the border from Kimberly into Appleton, WI on 29 Sep. '17. There was no bridge here until the expressway was constructed in the early '90s, completed Sep. '93. The tan building at left is Prolamina (formerly Coating Excellence International (cei)), 3621 E. Newberry St., Appleton, a rail customer. Train was heading back to the former C&NW yard at Appleton, WI after servicing Kimberly and Combined Locks. The vandalism was inflicted since the last time I photographed a train crossing it on 26 Mar. '14. I'm surprised at how long it stood unmarred.

Description:  CN local pauses next to the station sign while working in the former SOO yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 13 Oct. '17. The depot stood a few blocks to the east, on a long spur that from the main line and along W. College Ave. into downtown Appleton. The depot was razed in 1970 and the spur was pulled up a decade or two after that (although the spur is still depicted on CN's interactive system map). Local was servicing Presto Products, partially visible at left. Founded in 1961, it is currently possessed by the Rank Group. Previous owners include the Coca-Cola Co., the Reynolds Metals Co., and Alcoa Inc. The facility at right has two indoor spurs, but the turnout leading to them has been gone for quite a while. Most of the large facility seems idle, but some portions of it appear to used by someone. The main line forms the border between the Town of Grand Chute and the City of Appleton for this portion of that often convoluted border.

Description:  CN local approaches N. Lynndale Dr. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 15 Oct. '17. I believe they just picked up an empty centerbeam flatcar from Wisconsin Building Supply. This is the branch that runs to New London, WI, but I'm not sure if the local ran all the way to New London or not. It used to be a main line which ran to Clintonville, where it split to continue northwestward to Eland and points beyond, or continue northeastward to Shawano and points beyond. W. College Ave. crosses the tracks near the center of the scene.

Title:  CN 9473
Description:  CN local approaches W. Spencer St. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 15 Oct. '17. This is the branch that runs to New London, WI, but I'm not sure if the local ran all the way to New London or not. It used to be a main line which ran to Clintonville, where it split to continue northwest to Eland and points beyond, or continue northeast to Shawano and points beyond. While I usually attempt to avoid telephone poles, I purposefully included this haggard old one because the small, red electrical box with a railroad lock is from a classic RR signal manufacturer (unfortunately I forgot which one).

Description:  CN local returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Oct. '17. Train has picked up one more boxcar since I saw it at W. Spencer St. in Appleton about 2 hours earlier. The rainbow was more impressive with the naked eye.

Description:  CN local crosses S. Outagamie St. and W. Prospect Ave. as it heads southeast with a single sad and lonely boxcar via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 30 Oct. '17. It is depressing to see such a short train heading down this branch line; there used to be much more activity.

Description:  CN local emerges from behind All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2, 1325 S. Perkins St., and approaches S. Perkins St. as it heads northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 14 Dec. '17. Train was preparing to drop off a cut of cars before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There is a spur along the south side of the building, the wheel stops are partially hidden in the snow, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to created employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc. It is currently a warehouse for All About Packaging, Inc., whose main facility is a couple of blocks away at 2200 W. Everett St. Founded at Appleton, WI in '96, they specialize in thermoformed packaging.
