WC 15
Title:  WC 15
Description:  A CN train crosses Clayton Ave. (and crosses the border from Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI, to the Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI) as it heads west along former SOO rails at Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI, on 26 Feb. '23. Fox Crossing, WI, was formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016. I was thrilled to see a caboose in the consist. Sorry, but I will not willingly utter the phrase "shoving platform" to describe a piece of rolling stock which is obviously a caboose. WC 15 is the former AC 9602, although one reference claims it was AC 9606.

HLCX 1070
Title:  HLCX 1070
Description:  HLCX 1070 rests on former CN rails on the west bank of the Fox River at Green Bay, WI, on 9 Jul. '22. These rails were originally laid by the GB&W/KGB&W circa 1895. The swing bridge was built circa 1924, to replace an earlier bridge. Some references suggest that these rails and bridge were joint GB&W/C&NW. I got all excited when I first spotted this locomotive here, thinking the FV&LS (or FOXY) was waiting to cross the bridge to work the other side of the river. My excitement quickly turned to disappointment, when I realized the locomotive was silent and dark. The scene is bracketed by St. Mary's Cement on the left, and Graymont on the right.

GTW 4917
Title:  GTW 4917
Description:  A CN train, with a friendly engineer, passes the former C&NW depot as it hauls 6 cars northeast at Green Bay, WI, on 9 Jul. '22. The depot, designed by Charles Sumner Frost, was built in the Italian Renaissance Revival style and completed in 1899. Passenger train service ceased in 1971 but it was still used by the railroad for years. From 1996 until 2021, it was home to Titletown Brewing Co. When they moved to larger quarters in one of the neighboring former cannery buildings, a new restaurant moved in. The depot is also a stop on the Green Bay Packers' Heritage Trail. Partially visible on the right is PPCX 800239, formerly AMTK 3222 'Palm Beach', formerly SCL 6602, formerly SAL 15. The 6-bedroom lounge car was built by American Car and Foundry Corp. in 1949 and ran on SAL/SCL between NY and FL for many years. AMTK spent $150,000 on repairs and remodeling after a wreck in 1974, but discontinued it from service in 1977. It was purchased from Amtrak by a private owner in 1978. He reconfigured the interior to 5 bedrooms, bar-lounge, and kitchenette. The restoration of the sleeper-lounge car was done well enough that it qualified to be pulled by AMTK trains. Not sure how long he owned it or who owns it now.

IC 3120 and IC 9603
Title:  IC 3120 and IC 9603
Description:  A CN train approaches Towmen Rd., as it transitions from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 26 Jun. '22. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The facility visible in the background is Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (WSI), 1222 Ehlers Rd., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing). It was used by Essity/SCA Tissue for quite a while. In 2019 the sign was changed to Clearwater Paper; they have since gone out-of-business. This facility has not received rail service for quite a while, but could be served via former SOO rails.

HLCX 3880 and HLCX 1037
Title:  HLCX 3880 and HLCX 1037
Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses Hwy. MM as it prepares to switch Shawano Specialty Papers (div. of Little Rapids Corp.) via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at West Shawano, Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI, on 25 Nov. '22. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. The name still appears on some official property records. The paper mill stands along an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. It is an awesome bicycle ride, but I (obviously) would prefer to see trains running on it. The fence to the far right surrounds the paper mill's water treatment facility, which was built upon the former site of the Shawano Brick Yard (a.k.a. Larson Brick Yard). The brick yard (owned by Charles Larson, and later his son Thomas, for most, if not all, of its existence) produced fine white or cream-colored brick from 1891 until 1946. The large facility contained three kilns and its own narrow-gauge railway. The paper mill purchased the property at some point after the brick yard closed and eventually demolished the entire facility, to include the Larson mansion. The paper mill's historic office building was constructed in 1901 of brick from that yard.

'22. It is neat to find a former C&NW locomotive plying former C&NW rails. This was formerly U.S. Paper Converters, until they closed in 2017, eliminating 52-56 jobs, depending on the reference. It appears the facility has been subdivided. The entrance on the east side, 4808 W. Converters Dr., is occupied by Agropur/WOW Logistics. The entrance on the north side, 4826 W. Converters Dr., is occupied by Midland Paper. I'm not sure which occupant receives rail service; it's possible that they both do. I thought this train was going to stop and spot their boxcar here, but they did not.

GTW 4921
Title:  GTW 4921
Description:  A CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, WI, on 6 Nov. '22 Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna, and is transitioning from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

CN 3242 and CN 3923
Title:  CN 3242 and CN 3923
Description:  A CN train passes the former C&NW depot as it heads northeast at Green Bay, WI, on 28 Oct. '22. The depot, designed by Charles Sumner Frost, was built in the Italian Renaissance Revival style and completed in 1899. Passenger train service ceased in 1971 but it was still used by the railroad for years. From 1996 until 2021, it was home to Titletown Brewing Co. It looks like the current occupant is The Depot. The depot is also a stop on the Green Bay Packers' Heritage Trail.

GTW 4915 and GTW 4912
Title:  GTW 4915 and GTW 4912
Description:  A CN local crawls past the depot/yard office at the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, historically C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 16 Oct. '22. Local was preparing to set out cars before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond right about where the lead locomotive is, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible in the background is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

CN 2231 and CN 8003
Title:  CN 2231 and CN 8003
Description:  A CN train approaches Harrison St. as it heads south via former SOO rails at Town of Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., WI, on 15 Oct. '22. The former C&NW right-of-way runs parallel to these tracks just out-of-frame to the right. The CN main line transitions from the former SOO to the former C&NW right-of-way at Harrison St. There used to be a diamond under the lead locomotive, where a C&NW branch left their main line, crossed the SOO, and headed west. This is where Tower CF once stood. I was standing on Harrison St., in the City of Oshkosh, but the train is traversing an isolated, pitiful scrap of the Town of Oshkosh.

CN 9530
Title:  CN 9530
Description:  CN 9530 approaches Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., Menasha, WI, on 10 Sep. '20. Simply Incredible Foods purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities (Menasha Utilities) plant in Jun. '14. These rails were laid by the WC ca. 1872-4 to form a connection from the C&NW main line to the M&N, which the WC leased effective 30 Nov. '73. According to History of the Wisconsin Central, 1941, this stretch was constructed after the lease, so probably that winter or early in 1874. However, a map of Menasha dated 1872 depicts a similar connecting track, but located farther east and connecting to the C&NW bridge.
