Title:  HLCX 1048
Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses Municipal Dr./Hwy. 76 as it heads southeast via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Greenville, WI, on 6 Aug. '23. The historic Greenville House, a.k.a. Kronser Hotel & Saloon, stands in the background. Built by Joseph A. Kronser in 1897, it is currently home to Greenville Station (formerly Bootleggers), with a first floor bar and a second floor resale store. Several references erroneously state that the building dates to 1887. The original hotel was erected in that year, but it burned down and the current facility was erected in its place. Some references also claim that the building has been called Greenville Station for over 100 years, but that too is an exaggeration.

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train heads southeast via former CN, historically C&NW, rails at Town of Hortonia, Outagamie Co., WI, on 6 Aug. '23. The train is passing the new overpass which is being erected in order to carry the pending Hwy. 15 by-pass over the tracks. It’s cool that one old telephone pole stands along the right-of-way (to the right of the locomotive).

The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

CN 2894
Title:  CN 2894
Description:  A CN train parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads south past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Jul. '23. The train was passing a halted northbound train and had three locomotives, CN 3826 and CN 3820 pulling, as well as CN 2894 mid-train. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible above the trains. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from that building; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

IC 3138
Title:  IC 3138
Description:  A CN locomotive crosses Kampo Rd. as it heads northeast via a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, at Neenah, WI, on 4 Jul. '23. The former SOO main line, also in use by CN, runs parallel along the other side of the train. The C&NW rails were laid in 1861, the SOO rails were laid by the Wisconsin Central (WC) in 1882. An office building at 55 Jewelers Park Dr., is partially visible to the right. It was built for Plexus in 1987, they vacated it after they moved into their new office building in downtown Neenah.

HLCX 3880
Title:  HLCX 3880
Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses Hwy. MMM, formerly Hwy. 29, as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at the Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI, on 26 May '23. These rails were laid by the C&NW in 1884. This is a rare, approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). The rest of that former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. It is an awesome bicycle ride, but I (obviously) would prefer to see trains running on it.

CN 9530
Title:  CN 9530
Description:  A CN train crosses Garfield Ave. as it works the northwest end of the former C&NW yard on Doty Island at Menasha, WI, on 18 May '23. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., stands at left. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of '16, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hardworking Americans by moving production out-of-state. Now it is just another warehouse.

Description:  A FV&LS (or FOXY) train crosses W. Spencer St. as it shoves a few cars from the former C&NW yard to the former SOO, originally W&N, yard at Appleton, WI, on 12 May '23. The FV&LS inherited both yards from the CN. The facility on the left, 1840 W. Spencer St., is owned by Northern Wis. Warehouses, LLC, which gives the same address as the corporate office of WOW Logistics. Built in 1997 and later expanded, the facility has been sub-divided. Part of it is available for lease, part of it is used by Foremost. It could receive rail service, but hasn't for quite a while. The facility partially visible in the background to the right is Foremost Farms USA, 1815 W. Spencer St. The facility had a spur which was removed ca. Sep. '20, it had not been used for quite a while.

GTW 4912 and CN 9574
Title:  GTW 4912 and CN 9574
Description:  A CN train passes the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, depot as it sets out cars at Appleton Junction, WI, on 18 Mar. '23. The train continued on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond right about where the second locomotive rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible to the left is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

GTW 4912 and CN 9574
Title:  GTW 4912 and CN 9574
Description:  Appleton, WI A CN train crosses W. 2nd St. as it sets out cars at the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 18 Mar. '23. The train continued on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. The FV&LS depot is partially visible to the left. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible to the right. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose. The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

Title:  IC 2714 and CN 5792
Description:  A CN train (with a friendly crew) passes the former C&NW depot as it heads northeast at Green Bay, WI, on 15 Apr. '23. The depot, designed by Charles Sumner Frost, was built in the Italian Renaissance Revival style and completed in 1899. Passenger train service ceased in 1971 but it was still used by the railroad for years. From 1996 until 2021, it was home to Titletown Brewing Co. When they moved to larger quarters in one of the neighboring former cannery buildings, a new restaurant moved in, The Depot Gastro Pub. It looks like the current occupant is a restaurant called simply The Depot. The depot is also a stop on the Green Bay Packers' Heritage Trail. On the right is PPCX 800239, formerly AMTK 3222 'Palm Beach', formerly SCL 6602, formerly SAL 15. The 6-bedroom lounge car was built by American Car and Foundry Corp. in 1949 and ran on SCL between NY and FL for many years. Amtrak spent $150,000 on repairs and remodeling after a wreck in 1974, but discontinued it from service in 1977. Robert Nelson, a tax attorney at the National Railroad Museum at the time, purchased it from AMTK in 1978. He reconfigured the interior to 5 bedrooms, bar-lounge, and kitchenette. The restoration of the sleeper-lounge car was done well enough that it qualified to be pulled by AMTK trains. Not sure how long he owned it or who owns it now.

CN 9673 and CN 9574
Title:  CN 9673 and CN 9574
Description:  A CN train parallels Union St. and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it departs the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Mar. '23. The train was heading to Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

Title:  BLE 866
Description:  An interesting visitor from out-of-town, BLE 866, works the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 12 Mar. '23. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. This line was laid by the WC in 1882.

Description:  A CN local approaches Towmen Rd. as it transitions from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 11 Mar. '23. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The facility visible in the background is Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (WSI). This facility has not received rail service for quite a while, but could be served via former SOO rails. The C&NW rails were laid in 1861. The SOO rails were originally laid by the W&N in 1920.
