The facility at right is Neenah Paper (warehouse and finishing center), 1376 and 1500 Kimberly Dr., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing). There is a spur, but the turnout has been gone for quite a while.

CN 2919 and CN 2871
Title:  CN 2919 and CN 2871
Description:  CN container train passes the Main St. overpass and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 18 Jul. '15. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are near the right edge of the photograph. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The City of Neenah has conveniently placed a park bench here in Arrowhead Park so rail fans can watch trains go by.

CN 2924 and CN 2873
Title:  CN 2924 and CN 2873
Description:  CN through freight crosses the frozen Rat River and bisects the Rat River Wildlife Area as it speeds northwest via the former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI on 25 Jan. '15. I was not quite in the position I wanted when this train came roaring by; in my haste I advanced one-too-many increments of the zoom. I like this photograph, but I would like it more if the nose of the trailing locomotive was in frame. One advantage of enduring our wonderful winter weather, the frozen water affords shots that would otherwise require hip-waders or a skiff.

CN 2873
Title:  CN 2873
Description:  A northbound CN container train passes the depot/yard office and the sad remnants of the former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 22 Jan. '17. Train had two locomotives, CN 3022 pulling and CN 2873 mid-train. The depot/yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. The yard was torn up in Aug. '16. There had been no cars spotted here since at least 31 Jan. '16. They did leave the passing siding and team track.

Looking southeast from the Train Watchers' bench, it was emplaced in 2016 "In honor of John Kurka, Papa to Sam and Caleb, "the Train Watchers."

CN 2874
Title:  CN 2874
Description:  A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing while heading south at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 1 May '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 2874 pulling and CN 2833 mid-train. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks. It was built in 1891, to replace the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

Title:  CN 2884 and CN 3045
Description:  CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 as it speeds northeast via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 28 May '16. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

CN 2894
Title:  CN 2894
Description:  A CN train parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads south past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Jul. '23. The train was passing a halted northbound train and had three locomotives, CN 3826 and CN 3820 pulling, as well as CN 2894 mid-train. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible above the trains. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from that building; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

CN 2895
Title:  CN 2895
Description:  A CN container train passes the Main St. overpass and the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot on the west leg of the wye at the north end of the yard at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '18. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties (near the center of the photograph) rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Train had two locomotives, CN 2895, CN 3076.

Title:  CN 2895, CN 3076
Description:  A CN container train passes Arrowhead Park as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 2895, CN 3076. The Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp. and International Children's Fund, is partially visible background right. [The facility has undergone numerous name changes in its long history, but if one were to pick a generic and historic name for it, it would need to be Neenah Stove Works because that is what it was referred to for so many years, through several changes in ownership. The second most common generic reference would be the Neenah foundry, because for many years it was the only foundry in Neenah, but obviously that could cause confusion today.]

CN 2924 and CN 2896
Title:  CN 2924 and CN 2896
Description:  CN through freight sets out and picks up cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Jan. '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.
