CN 2884 and CN 3045 |
Description: |
CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 as it speeds northeast via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 28 May '16. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. |

CN 3045 |
Description: |
A CN unit train of tank cars parallels Union St. and passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Feb. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 2897 pulling as well as CN 3045 pushing. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. |
