Description:
CN autorack train passes the former SOO depot as it heads northwest through Waupaca, WI on Independence Day, 4 Jul. '15. This depot was built by WC in 1907 and opened in 1908; it is the 3rd WC depot at Waupaca. Passenger service ended in Jan. ‘65, but the railroad continued to use the depot until 1987. It stood vacant and decaying for many years until restoration began after it was purchased from the CN in 2004. The previous wooden depot had burned down on 5 May 1907. That 2nd depot was completed in Apr. 1881, when the original ca. 1871 depot was converted into a freight house. That original depot, then freight house, burned down in Nov. ’48. That led to the construction of the current brick freight house in early 1949, it is partially visible to the right of the lead locomotive. Train had three locomotives, CN 2880, CN 2037, and CN 207.

Description:
CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 as it speeds northeast via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 28 May '16. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. A remnant of the former C&NW main line runs parallel on the far side of the train.

A heavily powered CN through freight kicks up some of the freshly fallen snow and approaches Pioneer Rd. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI on 13 Dec. '17. Train had five locomotives, CN 2891, CN (?), IC 1007, CN 8886, CN 8932. This scene looks odd without the interesting, old telephone poles that stood along the near side of the tracks for 146 years, until they were removed between 4 and 18 Sep. '17.

A CN train parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads south past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Jul. '23. The train was passing a halted northbound train and had three locomotives, CN 3826 and CN 3820 pulling, as well as CN 2894 mid-train. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible above the trains. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from that building; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1881 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

A CN container train passes the Main St. overpass and the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot on the west leg of the wye at the north end of the yard at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '18. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties (near the center of the photograph) rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Train had two locomotives, CN 2895, CN 3076.

[The facility has undergone numerous name changes in its long history, but if one were to pick a generic and historic name for it, it would need to be Neenah Stove Works because that is what it was referred to for so many years, through several changes in ownership. The second most common generic reference would be the Neenah foundry, because for many years it was the only foundry in Neenah, but obviously that could cause confusion today.]

Description:
CN through freight sets out and picks up cars at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Jan. '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:
A CN through freight parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. and passes a waiting local as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 6 Apr. '18. The local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16). The former SOO rails run parallel on the other side of the trains. Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W.

CN through freight approaches W. 2nd St. and passes in front of the depot as it heads northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 10 Jun. '15. I do not know the trains origin or destination, but it came from the direction of Fond du Lac, stopped at Neenah, then passed through Appleton on its way to Green Bay, and possibly points beyond.

Description:
A southbound CN tank car unit train passes the yard office in an unusually empty former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 10 Feb. '16. Normally this view of the facility is blocked by the cars in the yard. I've never seen this yard completely empty. The building on the right sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. Train had three locomotives, CN 2811 and CN 2873 pulling, as well as CN 2909 pushing.

CN through freight passes the CHS Larsen Cooperative - Readfield grain terminal and fertilizer facility (partially visible at left) as it heads east via former SOO rails at North Readfield, WI on 28 Oct. '17. Larsen Cooperative merged with CHS, Inc. on 1 Sep. '12. Train had three locomotives, CN 2827 and CN 2807 up front and CN 2909 mid-train. Some confuse North Readfield with slightly larger Readfield, 1 mile to the south. This is likely due, in part, because everything in the former has a mailing address of the latter. The pair of unincorporated communities are distinct, and the latter has no railroad tracks.
