CN 9486
Title:  CN 9486
Description:  A CN local parallels the Newberry Trail (originally Newberry St.) as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 15 Sep. '18. Train was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. It's difficult to see from this angle, but at the mid-point of the visible portion of the trail, you can see where a spur used to cross Newberry St. to serve the Consolidated Papers Interlake Division (historically Interlake Pulp & Paper Co.) mill. The oldest part of the mill was built ca. 1890 by the Manufacturing Investment Company, on the site of the 1861 Richmond Brothers paper mill, which was destroyed by fire in 1887. The large, historic manufacturing facility was destroyed several years ago in order to make way for butt-ugly condominiums, a dreadful apartment building, and an unadorned, overrated hotel. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some variation of same. CN 9486 and CN 4721
Title:  CN 9486 and CN 4721
Description:  A CN local crosses the W. Lawrence St. grade crossing and passes the recently closed S. Locust St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 17 Mar. '19. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. The S. Locust St. grade crossing was closed as part of Appleton's quest for so-called quiet zone status. The "Do Not Enter" signs (there is one on the far side of the tracks as well) were put up in an attempt to discourage distracted drivers from trying to drive down the railroad tracks.

Description:  A CN local approaches the Main St. overpass as it traverses the S-curve at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Mar. '19. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen to the left of the train. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Eggers Industries (abbreviated), 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, originally built as Hardwood Products Co. in 1910, an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left. Clearwater Paper Corp., formerly Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16)), an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left. Clearwater Paper Corp., formerly Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Description:  A CN local crosses N. State St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 8 Jun. '19. Train was headed back from Little Chute and Kaukauna. The Non-mountable Curb Island (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) was installed last year as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. The parking lot of the historic Flanagan's Stop & Shop is partially visible to the right, if you appreciate an excellent selection of liquor, beer, and wine. As I pulled into their parking lot, I heard a horn signaling the approach of this train. I was forced to photograph the train before going into the store to make my beer selection.

Description:  CN local crosses the turnout for the north leg of the wye as it traverses the east leg of the wye at north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Aug ’16. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties in the foreground rest atop the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Plexus and the Affinity clinic in the background were erected on part of the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The steel skeleton of Neenah's latest repugnant, modern office building rises background right. There is not much room for historic buildings or classic architecture in Future Neenah. I believe the train was preparing to head toward Manitowoc.

Title:  CN 9513 and CN 7027
Description:  A CN local crosses Military Rd./Hwy. M and passes Sherwood Elevator as it heads east via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Sherwood, WI on 4 Sep. '16. Sherwood Elevator has been owned, operated, and expanded by the Kress family since they purchased it in 1951. Their grain terminal, out of frame to the left, has a capacity of 1 million bushels. Unfortunately the elevator has not received rail service for quite a while. Train was headed for Manitowoc and had two locomotives, CN 9513 and CN 7027.

Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W. Title:  CN 9515, et al.
Description:  A CN local passes behind the depot/yard office as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 10 Nov. '19. Usually they stay on the main line and pass in front of the depot/yard office while making their setout, but this isn't the first time I've watched them do it this way. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, CN 9515 and GTW 5812. There used to be a diamond in front of where the depot/yard office sits, about where the sidewalk leading to the front door crosses the tracks, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building behind the depot/yard office is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St., Appleton, WI. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Description:  A heavily powered CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Nov. '19. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible at left. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose.

Description:  A CN train passes the former Caroline St. grade crossing as it departs the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 5 Nov. '23. The train was heading for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards.

Description:  A CN local switches Presto Products, 670 N. Perkins St., Appleton, WI (physically located in Town of Grand Chute) adjacent to the former SOO yard at Appleton, WI, on 23 Jun. '21. The station sign can be seen to the left of the locomotive. The depot stood a few blocks to the east, on a long spur that ran from the main line and along W. College Ave. into downtown Appleton. The depot was razed in 1970 and the spur was pulled up a decade or two after that (although the spur is still depicted on CN's interactive system map on their website). The main line forms the border between the Town of Grand Chute and the City of Appleton for this portion of that often ridiculously convoluted border. The facility partially visible to the right, currently home to Byproduct Recycling, has a pair of indoor spurs, but the turnout which once connected those spurs to the active rails is absent.

Description:  A CN local parallels the Newberry Trail (originally Newberry St.), and prepares to cross it, as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' with 11 cars via the former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 24 Jun. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’ Many years ago it was referred to 'The Water Power.'

Description:  CN local parallels Thilmany Rd. and the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 2 Mar. '17. From its founding in 1883 until 26 Jun. '13, the Kaukauna paper mill was Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers). The pulpwood truck partially visible at left is unloading logs which will soon be loaded onto pulpwood cars to be shipped somewhere else, a process which seems to have started sometime last year. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church is visible up on the hill.

CN 9530 and IC 3115
Title:  CN 9530 and IC 3115
Description:  A CN local crosses S. Story St. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 25 Jun. '18. Train was headed back toward Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna. The Non-mountable Curb Island (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) has been installed recently (since 6 May) as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. The interesting, old building at 302 S. Story St., partially visible beyond the locomotives, is currently home to The Train Station. Their facebook page describes it as a venue for “live music, open mic, educational presentations, film showings, yoga, classes, meetings.” The building dates to at least 1921, when it was a neighborhood grocery store owned by Otto J. Ruhsam. Circa the ‘50s it was the Heigl Grocery Beer Depot. The area to the right was home to the historic Pierce Manufacturing plant that occupied this city block from 1917 until it was razed in 2011. This plot of land has been divided into lots for Habitat for Humanity and some homes have sprung up to partially obscure the view.

Description:  A CN local passes the former N. Superior St. grade crossing (just out-of-frame to right) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 21 Jul. '18. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. A pair of tall buildings loom above the second locomotive. The nearest and shorter one is AT&T Communications & Network Services, 221 W. Washington St. The taller one is the former Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL) building, 222 W. College Ave., erected in 1952. Since AAL’s successor vacated the building, it has become home to multiple tenants, and it has been bestowed with the unimaginative moniker of The 222 Building. There used to be six tracks here, only the main line remains.

GTW 5856 and CN 9530
Title:  GTW 5856 and CN 9530
Description:  A CN local bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 with S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 (probably the busiest intersection, consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 31 Aug. '18. The MOW worker was monitoring the recently replaced railroad signals and gate. A motorist died after he failed to negotiate the jog in S. Memorial Dr. (while traveling at excessive speed), struck the median, rolled his vehicle, and knocked down a street light, traffic signal, and the grade crossing signal at 0217 hours on 30 Aug. You can see his tire tracks in the grass. This portion of the intersection was closed until the railroad signals could be replaced. As soon as the local cleared the intersection, the MOW worker removed the remaining barricades from the street. The interesting brick building at right is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building was built between 1895 and '01 by the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper or Marshall Bros. Paper. The company was founded in '93 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. Samuel's brothers, Louis J. and Harry M., later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north (far) side of the building. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna.

Description:  A CN local crosses Thilmany Rd. and traverses the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in ‘89 after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners and renamed it. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. The original Thilmany facility stood just out-of-frame to the left, until the majority of it was destroyed in 2013. The oldest part of that complex (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) was saved and restored to house the Kaukauna Library and some offices. The bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911.

Description:  A CN local parallels Thilmany Rd. and the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. The train was too long to fit the switchback to be shoved into the mill's stub yard all at once. Five or six woodchip gondolas can be seen parked on the grade leading up to the main line for now. Looking southeast from Thilmany Rd. (I presume). It should be labeled Stribley Rd., but it appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (out-of-frame to the right).
