Title:
WAMX 3894, et al.
Description:
WSOR train idles away on former MILW rails near the intersection of Hwy. 91 and Clairville Rd. at Oshkosh, WI on 3 Mar. '18. The station sign says Oshkosh, but the northeast quadrant of this crossroads remains a small, isolated remnant of the Town of Algoma. It is bordered on west, north, and east by Oshkosh, and bordered on the south by the Town of Nekimi. The Oshkosh boundary is about 1,500 feet northeast of the station sign. Train had three locomotives, WAMX 3894, WAMX 3869 and WAMX 3870. I was surprised to find this train here. I was even more surprised to see it still sitting here the following day. United Cooperative's Oshkosh grain facility towers above the train. The facility was constructed ca. 1992 by Olsen’s Mill, Inc. Bankruptcy forced the sale to a group led by P. J. Martini (president of C.R. Meyer and Sons Co.) ca. Apr. ’09. That group seems to have had a convoluted and confusing history during its brief ownership of the facility; various references refer to it as Martini’s Olsen’s Mill Acquisition Co., or Olsen’s Mill Acquisition Co., or Wisconsin Ag Services, or Ag Services of Wisconsin, et al. Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM) acquired the facility from Olsen’s Mill Acquisition Co./Ag Services of Wis. ca. 31 Aug. ’11. United Cooperative purchased the facility from ADM ca. Nov. ’15. The community of Fitzgerald used to be located at this crossroads.

CN 4700
Description:
CN local slows to halt at Milepost 318 on former SOO rails to conduct a crew change at Shawano, WI on 10 Sep. '15. Herzog Multi-Purpose Machine MPM XIII, powered by HZGX 179, is partially visible behind the local. WC 21022, WC 21137, CNA 404822, and WC 21162 are spotted at the small Seneca Foods Corp. facility (the blue metal building). The address on the door is 200 N. Green Bay Ave., Gillett, WI, which seems to imply that the canning plant in Gillett trucks their products about 25 miles to Shawano to be shipped by rail. Gillett was served by C&NW from 1884 to 1981. I was standing on the former C&NW right-of-way, now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. The tower to protect the junction stood just out of frame to the left, until it was torn down circa 1995, and remnants of the supports for the interlocking mechanisms are visible in the foreground.

Description:
CN local approaches the junction with the former C&NW right-of-way, now the Mountain-Bay State Trail, while servicing a local industry via former SOO rails at Shawano, WI on 10 Sep. '15. The interlocking tower that guarded the junction stood just out of frame to the right, south of SOO tracks and east of C&NW tracks, until it was torn down circa 1995. There are remnants of a foundation in the clump of trees this side of the locomotive, but I do not recall what used to be there.

CN local momentarily fouls Thilmany Rd. while servicing the Expera Specialty Solutions (originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co.) paper mill on the banks of the Fox River via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 27 Jan. '17. It should be labeled Stribley Rd., but it appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter. Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the restoration of the original Thilmany mill (out of frame to the right) and the creation of its new parking lot.

Description:
CN local emerges from behind All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2, and approaches S. Perkins St. as it heads northwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 16 Feb. '17. Train was moving unusually slow and preparing to set out a string of cars in the yard at Appleton Junction. There is a spur along the south side of the building, the wheel stops are behind the pile of snow, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to create employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc. It is currently a warehouse for All About Packaging, Inc., whose main facility is a couple of blocks away on W. Everett St. Founded at Appleton, WI in '96, they specialize in thermoformed packaging.

Station signs were erected after the depot was removed but they were removed between 22 and 29 Mar. '14 when Cross Country Clearing, LLC removed some of the old telephone poles along the right-of-way. I thought they would put the station signs up again, but they have not.

Description:
CN local parallels Hwy. 41 and passes under Hwy. G as it services a couple of industries along the former C&NW main line at Snells, WI on 29 Aug. '15. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. The former SOO main line is in the foreground. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

Description:
CN local shoves a couple of boxcars across N. Lake St. as it services the Clearwater Paper Corp. mill via former SOO rails at Town of Menasha, WI on 21 May '16. Originally incorporated as Lakeside Paper Co. on 9 Nov. 1910, construction of the mill began in ’11, and paper production commenced on 12 Jun. ‘12. At some point they started to sell a large share of their book paper production to Sears, Roebuck & Co. for their catalogues. The mill was sold and re-incorporated as Lakeview Paper Co. on 9 Aug. ’20. Sears, Roebuck & Co. bought the facility ca. the mid- to late-‘20s. The mill was shut down on 1 Feb. ’29 after a boiler failure and Sears promptly sold it to the Canadian firm of Fraser Paper, Ltd. (which also produced book paper for Sears). Fraser did not hold it long, they sold it to Kimberly-Clark Corp. ca. Mar. ’29, known as the Lakeview Mill. Kimberly-Clark sold the facility to American Tissue Mills ca. Aug. ’96. The mill abruptly shut down on 6 Sep. ’01 due to American Tissue’s significant financial problems. The briefly idled mill was purchased by Cellu Tissue Corp. in ’02 and was renamed Cellu Tissue Corp. - Neenah, commonly shortened to Cellu Tissue - Neenah. Cellu Tissue Corp. was acquired by Clearwater Paper Group in ’10. The mill is a longtime rail customer, a map from 1955 shows 6 spurs to service this paper mill, now there are 2, but only this sees regular use.

Description:
CN local returns to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 May '16. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:
CN local, headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna, approaches the former N. Union St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 5 Jun. '16. They are passing some new apartments or condominiums erected last year at the former site of the historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. complex between E. Winnebago St., N. Union St., E. Commercial St., and behind a row of houses on N. Drew St. Eagle Manufacturing, makers of gasoline engines, tractors, and other farm implements, was incorporated in the Flats at Appleton, WI in Dec. 1888. When they outgrew that facility, they began construction of a new factory here in ’04. Over the years it grew until it occupied most of the block. Before its expansion it shared the block with the Ideal Lumber and Coal Co. to the east. Further east of that was C. D. Rowell & Son, Manufacturing, makers of car movers, fronting N. Union St. between E. Winnebago St. and E. Commercial St. All 3 facilities were served by C&NW. There was a diamond in the middle of the east end of E. Winnebago St., just west of N. Union St., near the small clump of trees on the right, for at least two spurs leading into that block.

IC 3110 and CN 4704
Description:
CN local crawls across the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions (originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co.) paper mill at Kaukauna, WI on 28 Jan. '13. Locals need to pull onto the bridge in order to clear the turnout which permits them to shove cars into the mill's stub yard. The rails now end at the opposite bank of the Fox River, but they used to continue to a wye at the intersection of Island St. and Dodge St. The north leg of the wye led to C&NW's Kaukauna yard and shops and on to Appleton Junction. The east leg of the wye led to Manitowoc, WI. The train was too long to be shoved into the mill's stub yard all at once. This is the second half, the remainder of the train was spotted a few minutes earlier. Bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911.

Description:
CN local slows to stop at the siding on former C&NW rails in Little Chute, WI on 9 Jun. '14. Crew had just finished servicing Nestlé Pizza Division, originally Jack's Pizza, and stopped here to rearrange a few cars in order to service the Little Chute industrial park one mile to the east. Train would then service Thilmany Pulp and Paper mill in Kaukauna before heading back to Neenah. Normally they service the Little Chute industrial park after Kaukauna, due to the orientation of the turnout, but today they did it differently. The industry on the left is Crystal Print, Inc., which receives periodic rail service.

A CN local shoves a string of cars across Garners Creek and into the east side of the Appleton Coated, LLC paper mill at Combined Locks, WI on 3 Mar. '17. Founded in 1889 as the Combined Locks Paper Co., it became Combined Paper Mills, Inc. in ‘46 after it purchased a paper mill in PA. Acquired by the National Cash Register Co. in ‘69, it was merged with Appleton Coated Paper Co. in ‘71 to form Appleton Papers, Inc. Known as Appleton Papers Locks Mill, it has been controlled by several different domestic and foreign owners over the years. It was separated from Appleton Papers in ‘00 and became Appleton Coated, LLC. There are currently 2 spurs on this side of the facility and 4 on the west side, there used to be more. The station sign is on the right, I do not know when the depot was removed.
