GTW 6228
Title:  GTW 6228
Description:  CN local crosses the Neenah Channel of the Fox River via former joint MILW/SOO bridge on its way back to the yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Jul. '14. Train had just completed some switching in Menasha. I intended to get a nice shot of the bridge and the train, but arrived about 30 seconds too late.

GTW 6228 and GTW 6221
Title:  GTW 6228 and GTW 6221
Description:  CN local hauls 23 cars northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction on a fog-shrouded 23 Nov. '14. Train was destined for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW mainline through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

CN 4705, IC 3137 and GTW 6228
Title:  CN 4705, IC 3137 and GTW 6228
Description:  CN local, a rare three unit train, backs across W. 2nd St. as it drops off a healthy string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 23 Jun. '15. Train had three locomotives, CN 4705, IC 3137 and GTW 6228. Local would then continue on to work Little Chute and Kaukauna, but they left GTW 6228 at the yard. Carter's Caboose is a small, rail side tavern just out of frame to the right.

GTW 6228
Title:  GTW 6228
Description:  CN local approaches Racine St. while sorting cars at the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 16 Aug. '15. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

Title:  GTW 6228
Description:  CN local crosses Appleton St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 16 Aug. '15. If you ask me, we do not see enough crossing signs that say “5 Tracks,” or more, around here anymore. I imagine the railroad wishes that Appleton St. did not bisect this small yard. Up until about 30 years ago this street also bisected the similar-sized Milwaukee Road (MILW) yard that used to stand behind me.

GTW 6228 and GTW 6221
Title:  GTW 6228 and GTW 6221
Description:  CN local passes Milepost 214 and approaches State St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails along the backside of College Ave. at Appleton, WI on 19 Oct. '15. The large brick building behind the locomotive is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building originally housed the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper, founded in 1893 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. Samuel's brothers Louis J. and Harry M. later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and also serviced the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse that stood where Walgreen's parking lot is now. That spur included a switchback to service J. Fountain Lumber Co., which stood north of the main line on the west side of State St., just out of frame to right.

CN 3268, CN 2831, GTW 6228, CN 9567
Title:  CN 3268, CN 2831, GTW 6228, CN 9567
Description:  A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 21 Nov. '20. The train is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The Holiday gas station stood in this grassy area before the Main St. overpass (just out-of-frame to the right) was built. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. In the background, a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill/park from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Several of Neenah's repugnant, contemporary edifices taint the skyline in the background at right. I am not a fan of modern architecture, obviously.

Eggers Div. of VT Industries, previously Eggers Industries, founded as Hardwood Products Co. in 1910, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible to the left.
