Title:  CN 4711
Description:  CN local crosses the junction with the former GB&W right-of-way as it hauls five cars southward via former SOO rails at Black Creek, WI on 21 Feb. '15. The former GB&W right-of-way is now the Newton Blackmour State Trail. The old signal relay case still has GB&W, as well as WCL, stenciled on its door. Train was returning to Neenah after working Shawano.

CN 4711
Title:  CN 4711
Description:  CN local hauls five cars southward past the former SOO yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 21 Feb. '15. This small yard used to serve as an interchange for the SOO and C&NW. Later it served as an intermodal yard for the WC. The trucks of the locomotive and freight cars are not visible because the train is descending a slight grade which will allow it to pass under the former C&NW tracks that run to New London, while the yard tracks maintain their level grade and connect with the former C&NW yard. Train was returning to Neenah after working Shawano.

CN 9513 and CN 4711
Title:  CN 9513 and CN 4711
Description:  CN local crosses the turnout for the north leg of the wye as it traverses the east leg of the wye at north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Aug ’16. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties in the foreground rest atop the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Plexus and the Affinity clinic in the background were erected on part of the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The steel skeleton of Neenah's latest repugnant, modern office building rises background right. There is not much room for historic buildings or classic architecture in Future Neenah. I believe the train was preparing to head toward Manitowoc.

Title:  CN 4711
Description:  A CN local crosses the North Channel (Menasha Channel) of the Fox River via the former joint MILW/SOO bridge as it heads southwest at Menasha, WI on 8 Mar. '19. In the foreground, a flock of common goldeneyes has been kicked up by the passing train. This perspective would have only been obtainable with a boat, until the new Loop the Lake bridge opened to the public on 23 Jun. '18. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., can be seen on the south bank of the river in the background. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of '16, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hard working Americans by moving production out-of-state. The TC Transcontinental, Inc., facility, historically Marathon Corp. (originally Menasha Printing & Carton Co.), 271 River St., is partially visible on the north bank of the river at left. The piers supporting the former C&NW bridge (also in use by CN) are partially visible under this bridge.

Description:  A CN local crosses the former SOO bridge over the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River at Neenah, WI on 8 Mar. '19. Looking northeast from the new Loop-the-Lake bridge (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Menasha was held 23 Jun. '18). The pair of new bridges are part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. This new view of the railroad bridge is interesting, but I will miss the once panoramic view of this bridge from the river bank.

Description:  CN local approaches Depot St. as it pulls 8 cars westward via former C&NW rails at Little Chute, WI on 22 Mar. '14. Local was headed back to Neenah after servicing Little Chute and Kaukauna. The depot used to stand just out of frame to the left, the location is currently occupied by Van Zeeland's Auto Care Center and convenience store at the intersection of Depot St. and Hwy. OO. The spur on the right is for Crystal Print, Inc., which receives periodic rail service. On 29 Mar. ’15 the station signs were laying on the ground. Barron, WI based Cross Country Clearing, LLC was removing some of the old telephone poles in order to harvest the copper wire along the right-of-way. I had hoped that they would re-install the station signs when they were done, but they did not.

They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

CN 4721, et al.
Title:  CN 4721, et al.
Description:  A CN local parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. as it heads northeast with about 23 cars via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 10 Dec. '17. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). Train was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, CN 4721 and CN 9473. The ongoing reconstruction of the Hwy. 41/ Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) is visible in the background. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange, but the ongoing, extensive expansion and reconstruction will make it a full interchange as well as increase traffic capacity.

CN 4721 and CN 9473
Title:  CN 4721 and CN 9473
Description:  CN local emerges from behind All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2, 1325 S. Perkins St., and approaches S. Perkins St. as it heads northeast through the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 14 Dec. '17. Train was preparing to drop off a cut of cars before continuing on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There is a spur along the south side of the building, the wheel stops are partially hidden in the snow, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to created employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc. It is currently a warehouse for All About Packaging, Inc., whose main facility is a couple of blocks away at 2200 W. Everett St. Founded at Appleton, WI in '96, they specialize in thermoformed packaging.

CN 4721 and a MILW Caboose on MILW Rails
Title:  CN 4721 and a MILW Caboose on MILW Rails
Description:  A CN local momentarily fouls the driveway as it prepares to depart LSC Communications, Inc. (formerly RR Donnelley, originally Banta Corp.), 800 Midway Rd., and head southwest via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 17 Dec. '17. LSC Communications was spun off from RR Donnelley ca. Nov. '16. I was thrilled to espy WC 16 bringing up the rear of the consist. It was awesome to see a former MILW caboose on former MILW rails, and I can't recall the last time I saw a caboose on a train.

IC 9601 and CN 4721
Title:  IC 9601 and CN 4721
Description:  A CN local returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 17 Jun. '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Modern maps tend to omit the W. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign. Some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna.

CN 4721
Title:  CN 4721
Description:  CN 4721 crosses the North Channel (Menasha Channel) of the Fox River via the former joint MILW/SOO bridge as it heads northeast at Menasha, WI on 12 Aug. '18. This perspective would have only been obtainable with a boat, until the new Loop the Lake bridge opened to the public (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Neenah was held 23 Jun. '18). The Coveris facility, historically Marathon Corp. (originally Menasha Printing & Carton Co.), 271 River St., is partially visible on the north bank of the river at left. The piers supporting the former C&NW bridge (also in use by CN) are partially visible under this bridge. At left, a fisherman or two are plying their luck in the shallows.

CN 4721, GTW 6226
Title:  CN 4721, GTW 6226
Description:  A CN local crosses the former SOO bridge over the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River at Neenah, WI on 12 Aug. '18. This was my first encounter with a train here since the new Loop-the-Lake bridge opened to the public (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Menasha was held 23 Jun. '18). The pair of new bridges are part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. This new view of the railroad bridge is interesting, but I will miss the once panoramic view of this bridge from the river bank. The Neenah-Menasha YMCA, Island Shores Retirement Community, N. Commercial St. Bridge, and Neenah Paper mill (an active rail customer) are visible in the background to the right.

IC 3115 and CN 4721
Title:  IC 3115 and CN 4721
Description:  A CN local bisects the intersection of S. Outagamie St. and W. Melvin St. (background left) and approaches W. 2nd St. while headed southwest past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Aug. '18. Train was headed back from Little Chute and Kaukauna and was slowing to halt in front of the depot/yard office. The rails leading to the left are the yard lead. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, stands at right. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gletchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. By ’67 it was the Junction Tavern, owned by at least two different people until at least ‘71. At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett).
