Title:  GTW 5857
Description:  CN local passes Intertape Polymer Group, IPG, 741 4th St., Menasha, WI, and crosses the former Manitowoc St. grade crossing via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 10 Dec. '17. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Manitowoc St. on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO tracks. It’s the same facility, but the address changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. Train was returning from the Hilbert-area and will complete some work in Menasha before heading back to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI.

Description:  CN local shoves 4 boxcars past the idle Earl Litho Printing Co. facility, 1486 Earl St., and across Midway Rd. via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 10 Dec. '17. I'm not sure when the facility closed. When I saw its current condition, I feared that it was being razed. I was surprised to learn that someone wants to remodel it for continued industrial use. I hope they succeed. The boxcars were destined for LSC Communications, Inc. (formerly RR Donnelley, originally Banta Corp.), out of frame to the right.

Description:  A CN local momentarily fouls N. Lake St. as it prepares to service local industries via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 17 Dec. '17. After pausing in the small ancillary yard behind Clearwater Paper Corp., local was about to execute the nearly 3-mile shove to a pair of warehouses at the intersection of Clayton Ave. and Winchester Rd./Hwy. II. The first car in the consist is also GTW. Eggers Industries (originally Hardwood Products Corp.), 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, is partially visible at left. Clearwater Paper Corp., formerly Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. Description:  A CN local crosses S. Badger Ave. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 4 Sep. '18. The Mountable Raised Curb System with Vertical Panels (one variant of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approved traffic channelization devices) was installed earlier this year as part of Appleton's quest for so-called 'Quiet Zone' status. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, GTW 5857 and CN 9530. The building at left, 217 S. Badger Ave., was built in 1966. Some references state it was built by Oscar J. Boldt Construction Co., other references state it was built for them. It was home to CASI in the mid-'80s. I’m not sure who owns or occupies it now.

Description:  A CN local crosses Garfield Ave. as it works the northwest end of the former C&NW yard on Doty Island at Menasha, WI on 15 Oct. '18. They have just returned from servicing Chemtrade (formerly General Chemical Corp.) east of Washington St. The former C&NW depot/yard office is partially visible behind the locomotive. The station sign says Neenah but it is actually located in Menasha. The border between the Twin Cities is about 750 feet to the south (right). The depot/yard office was built by the C&NW in 1965. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., stands at left. The oldest part of the facility was built in Apr. '47 to manufacture cartons for food packaging. The land had previously been used for stave and lumber drying yards for Menasha Wooden Ware. The facility operated continuously until the end of '16, when Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hard working Americans by moving production out-of-state.

Description:  A CN local crosses the junction with the former C&NW right-of-way, now the Mountain-Bay State Trail, while servicing the Seneca Foods facility (out-of-frame to left) via former SOO rails at Shawano, WI on 16 Oct. '18. The interlocking tower that once guarded the junction stood to the right, south of SOO tracks and east of C&NW tracks, until it was torn down circa 1995. I thought the tower stood by the clump of trees on this side of the boxcar, but a review of others' photographs on this site as well as some old maps has proven that my recollection of the tower's location was erroneous. There are remnants of a foundation there, but it must have been something else.

Description:  A CN local rounds a curve and approaches Hwy. O as it heads southeast with six cars via former SOO rails at Mackville Station, Town of Center, Outagamie Co., WI on 16 Oct. ‘18. Listed as Mackville Station on some old maps, distinguishing it from the community of Mackville which is 1-mile due east of here, it is listed as Mackville on some time tables. The station sign, which read Mackville, was stolen between 13 Jun. and 9 Jul. ’14, not long after I posted a photograph of it on this site. I presume it was stolen; I would think if the railroad had removed the sign they would have removed the posts as well. Both posts stood barren for quite a while. One of the posts still stands next to the track, the other lies on the ground. Some remnants of the depot’s foundation are hidden in the overgrowth. Part of the passing siding can be seen at right, it has been truncated at Hwy. O. What remains forms a spur which could be used to service the idle facility partially visible to the right (most recently Southwest Stainless & Alloy, previously Stainless Tubular Products). The cool, old barn in the background has a loading dock extending to the spur.

College Ave., can be seen at left. This portion is currently vacant, since WG&R Furniture moved to their new facility at the intersection of W. Wisconsin Ave. and Hwy. 41. N. Lynndale Dr. forms part of the ridiculously convoluted border between Appleton (to left) and the Town of Grand Chute (to right).

Description:  A CN local crosses W. College Ave. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 16 Dec. '18. Local was returning from New London. The old Kmart store, 2400 W. College Ave., stood on the north side of College Ave. until it was demolished in '09. It dated to at least '67; it closed in '00. Due to the ridiculously convoluted border between Appleton and the Town of Grand Chute, the train was, for the most part, in the former while I was standing in the latter.

Description:  A CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 27 Jul. '19. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is in the background. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.
