IC 9601 at C&NW Neenah & Menasha, WI Depot
Title:  IC 9601 at C&NW Neenah & Menasha, WI Depot
Description:  CN local passes the C&NW Neenah & Menasha depot as it traverses the remnants of the C&NW yard in the Twin Cities of Neenah and Menasha, WI (this is on the Neenah end) on 7 Aug. ’14. The border between the two cities is about 200 feet north of the depot. The depot, built in 1893, has been restored and is currently home to an architectural firm.

IC 9601 vs. Inattentive Driver
Title:  IC 9601 vs. Inattentive Driver
Description:  CN local has a close call with an inattentive driver in a “quiet zone” as it crosses Washington St., via former C&NW rails, while switching in Menasha, WI on 7 Aug. ’14. The engineer blew the horn when he realized the driver did not see the train and was not stopping, but the truck was on the tracks by the time the driver could stop and start to back up. Both the train and the truck were moving slowly, so the potential collision was easily avoided.

Description:  CN local parallels Harrison St. as it crosses over from the remnants of the former C&NW mainline to the former SOO mainline at the south end of the yard at Neenah, WI on 10 Aug. '14. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible on the left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. I presume the train, with about 40 cars, was returning from a trip to Fond du Lac.

IC 9601
Title:  IC 9601
Description:  CN local heads southwest via former SOO rails enroute back to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 21 May '15. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, partially visible on the right, occupies part of the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 132 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The vertical steel structure on the left used to carry steam pipes over the tracks to the paper mill from the defunct Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant). The ca. 1871 WC (later SOO) depot stood on the south (right) side of the tracks at the west end of Wisconsin Ave., right about where the middle of the train is. It was built on pilings in the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts, these tracks were originally on a trestle over the water. All of the earth under and to the left (north) of these rails is landfill, deposited in the south end of the lake by the paper mills starting in the 1950s. That former landfill is now Arrowhead Park. The depot was converted to a freight house when a new depot was constructed on Sherry St. in 1891. The depot that stood here was demolished or moved between 1906 and 1913.

Description:  CN local approaches Towmen Rd. as it hauls 34 cars southwest via former C&NW rails at Shawano Junction in the Town of Menasha, WI on 24 Oct. '15. I'm not sure of the train's origin or destination, but it did not appear to be one of the normal locals. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW mainline through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails, the rails in the foreground.

Title:  IC 9601
Description:  A CN local passes the former N. Superior St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 19 May '18. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. This grade crossing was removed ca. the 3rd week of Nov. '13. The large building in the background at left is the former H. C. Prange Co. (a.k.a. Prange's) department store, 126 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI. The drab, utilitarian structure was erected ca. 1961, replacing the historic and beautiful Pettibone-Peabody Co. department store (H. C. Prange purchased the company in ‘46). It is currently home to City Hall and a children's museum. A pair of tall buildings loom above the locomotive. The nearest and shorter one is AT&T Communications & Network Services, 221 W. Washington St., Appleton, WI. The taller one is the former Aid Association of Lutherans (AAL) building, 222 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI, erected in 1952. After AAL’s successor vacated the building, it has become home to multiple tenants, and it has been bestowed with the unimaginative moniker of The 222 Building.

Title:  IC 9601
Description:  A CN local returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Sep. '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:  A CN local transitions from the west leg of the wye to the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Apr. '19. I am left to wonder why they were compelled to navigate the wye in order to back into the yard. The locomotive is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Eggers Industries, originally Hardwood Products Co., 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16)), an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background at right.

Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. The dump truck and bulldozer in the background rest where a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16.

Description:  A CN local crosses one of four diamonds which remain on this mostly industrial island (formed when the Fox River navigation canal was excavated) as it heads southwest via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI, on 30 Mar. '20. TC Transcontinental, Inc., 271 River St., an active rail customer, can be seen in the background. The site was originally home to the Menasha Printing & Carton Company, formed in 1917 through the merger of two older, neighboring companies, the Menasha Printing Co. and the Menasha Carton Co. Acquired by Marathon Paper (later Marathon Corp.) in '27, it became the Marathon Div. of American Can Co. in '57. James River Corp. acquired American Can in '82. At some point it was acquired by Bemis Co., who sold it to Exopack Holding Corp. (Sun Capital Partners, Inc.) in '10. At some point it became Coveris, until its purchase by TC Transcontinental, Inc. in '18. Looking southeast from River St. The street now jogs to the left, but it used to continue straight ahead here. At some point in the late 1990s or early 2000s, part of River St. was vacated and re-routed to facilitate expansion of this facility.

Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel on this side of the train.

The paper mill was founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883. It became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in 1889, after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. It was acquired by Finland’s Ahlstrom-Munksjö on 10 Oct. ’18. The train is crossing the new, rerouted portion of Thilmany Rd. and the locomotive is about to cross what was the original route of Thilmany Rd. It appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (behind me to the left). The remnants of pavement to the right was once Thilmany Rd.

Description:  CN local shoves a string of cars along former C&NW rails to service Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (the tan building partially visible on the left) and Imerys USA, Inc. (the blue, truncated, triangular shape partially visible behind the tree line, background left) in Combined Locks, WI on 18 Feb. '14 (Imerys is just across the border in Kimberly). The tracks are quite sinuous here; they run on the south bank of the Fox River. I didn't notice the Bald Eagle until I was reviewing the photos.

Title:  IC 9602 and GTW 4620
Description:  CN local passes L. C. Siding enroute to service Appleton Coated paper mill via former C&NW rails in Combined Locks, WI on 18 Feb. '14. I have long thought the station sign is wrong, but I haven’t found definitive proof yet. I presume that L. C. is short for Little Chute, which is on the opposite side of the river. Seems like the sign should be C. L. Siding, for Combined Locks. Does anyone have an old C&NW timetable handy?

I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

Description:  A CN local passes the historic Dale feed mill and approaches Wisconsin Rd. (formerly Main St.)/Hwy. 96 as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Dale, WI, on 20 Feb. '21. Historically Main St. (as listed on CN's signal relay case), some of the street signs have been changed to Wisconsin Rd. (it shows up as Wisconsin Ave. on the satellite map). Hwy. 96 used to be Hwy. 10, until the latter's expansion and relocation ca. '97. The Dale feed mill was built between 1889 and 1908, when it was Northern Grain Co. By ’10 it was the Western Elevator Co., Western Grain Co. in some references. It was the Steffen’s Elevator Co. from ca. ’21 until at least ’68, it was purchased by John H. Steffens and later run by his sons. It was Dale Feed Service from ca. ’73 until at least ’81. It has been home to Earth Sense Energy Systems, Inc., W9715 State Rd. 96, Dale, WI, since ’96.

Description:  A CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI, (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 3 Jul. '21. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and is about to transition to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The facility visible in the background is Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (WSI), 1222 Ehlers Rd., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing). It was used by Essity/SCA Tissue for quite a while. In 2019 the sign was changed to Clearwater Paper; they have since gone out-of-business. This facility has not received rail service for quite a while, but could be served via former SOO rails.

Description:  CN local approaches Washington St. as it emerges from U.S. Paper Mills Corp., 69 Washington St., at Menasha, WI on 8 Nov. '17. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small industrial island for many years.
