GTW 6221 and EJ&E 663
Description:
CN local halts short of Stribley Rd. after descending the steep grade on a sharp curve from the former C&NW main line down to the banks of the Fox River in order to service Expera Specialty Solutions (formerly Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co., from 1883 until 26 Jun. '13) at Kaukauna, WI on 4 Jan. '15.

GTW 6221 and EJ&E 663
Description:
CN local parallels Thilmany Rd. and a sharp bend in the frigid Fox River as it prepares to service Expera Specialty Solutions (formerly Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co., from 1883 until 26 Jun. '13) via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 4 Jan. '15. Until a couple of years ago, the old Thilmany mill would have loomed behind any train traversing these rails; the current, newer, mill looms out of frame to the right.

GTW 6221 and EJ&E 663
Description:
CN local slowly crawls across the former C&NW bridge over the frigid Fox River as it prepares to service Expera Specialty Solutions mill (formerly Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co., from 1883 until 26 Jun. '13) at Kaukauna, WI on 4 Jan. '15. Railroad bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. A portion of the old Thilmany mill, saved from the wrecking ball, is visible behind the locomotives. The current, newer, mill looms out of frame to the right. Kaukauna’s Veterans Memorial Bridge, the vertical lift bridge, reflects the last rays of the setting sun behind the remnants of the old mill.

GTW 6228 and GTW 6221
Description:
CN local passes Milepost 214 and approaches State St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails along the backside of College Ave. at Appleton, WI on 19 Oct. '15. The large brick building behind the locomotive is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building originally housed the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper, founded in 1893 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. Samuel's brothers Louis J. and Harry M. later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and also serviced the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse that stood where Walgreen's parking lot is now. That spur included a switchback to service J. Fountain Lumber Co., which stood north of the main line on the west side of State St., just out of frame to right.

GTW 4620, GTW 6221, CN 9601
Description:
CN local assembles its train of 34 cars at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 May '16. I believe they were preparing to head toward Manitowoc, WI. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the owners didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

GTW 4620, GTW 6221, CN 9601
Description:
CN local parallels 4th St. and approaches De Pere St. (the current street signs have been lazily bastardized to Depere St.) as it traverses the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI with 34 cars on 15 May '16. I believe they were headed for Manitowoc, WI. The sun's location was less-than-ideal, but I wanted to capture a train with 3 locomotives in this yard because it doesn't seem to happen very often.

GTW 6221 and C&NW Neenah-Menasha, WI Depot
Description:
CN local passes the former C&NW Neenah-Menasha depot as it backs through the remnants of the C&NW Neenah-Menasha yard at Neenah, WI on 5 Jun. '16. The depot was built in 1893 to replace the original ca. 1861 depot. It was restored in 1994 and is currently home to Gries Architectural Group, Inc., and Sturtevant & Associates, LLC, an insurance firm. While quite rusty, the metal C&NW sign still adorns the trackside gable above the arched window. The original C&NW Neenah depot, built ca. 1861, was located near Galloway Co., 601 S Commercial St. The depot was later moved behind the Jersild Knitting Co., 333 N. Commercial St (about 400-500 feet out of frame to the left). It was razed after new depot was completed. The border between the Twin Cities of Neenah and Menasha bisects the yard about 200 feet north of the depot, out of frame to the right.

A CN local parallels Milwaukee St. and approaches 7th St. as it heads north via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 19 Mar. '18. Train was headed for LSC Communications, Inc. (formerly RR Donnelley, originally Banta Corp.). Dura-Fibre, LLC, is partially visible behind the locomotive. Organized as the National Tractor & Machinery Co. at Chicago in 1916 (some references state ’18). They reorganized as the Uncle Sam Tractor and Machinery Co. ca. Mar. ’18 and moved to Menasha, WI ca. Feb. ‘19. They constructed a new 60’ x 125’ factory and 25’ x 40’ office building at 344 6th St. and erected 2 additions in ’20, with further expansion in ’22. The company reorganized as Wisconsin Automotive Corp. ca. ’23 in order to add automobiles to its line of products, particularly the Harris Six. They went out of business sometime between ’24 and ’28. The Neenah Shoe Co. occupied the plant in ’28. The Wisconsin Container Corp. was organized ca. ’31 to manufacture solid fiber and corrugated containers at this facility. The company was acquired by Menasha Corp. ca. ’69 and became their Solid Fibre Division. On 8 Feb. ’73, Menasha Corp. was granted a trademark for their “Grain-tainer” fiberboard grain doors for boxcars, but I’m not positive if they were made here or at another Menasha Corp. facility. Menasha Corp. sold the facility in ’04 and the name was changed to Dura-Fibre at some point.

CN local crosses the former joint MILW/SOO bridge over the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River at Neenah, WI on 19 Mar. '18. As you can see, construction of the new pedestrian bridge is nearing completion. The new bridge is part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. A similar bridge over the North Channel (Menasha Channel) is nearing completion in Menasha. I'm looking forward to utilizing the new trail sections, but I will miss the once panoramic view of this railroad bridge. The Menasha bridge will not be as close to the railroad bridge and will provide a view heretofore only attainable with a boat.

A CN local parallels Harrison St. and approaches the W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) as it returns to the south end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 10 Aug. '18. The covered hoppers spotted next to the silos at left are for Bemis (formerly Curwood, Inc.), 1815 Marathon Ave. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background toward the right. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about half-a-mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. A remnant of the former C&NW main line can be seen to the left.

GTW 6226 and CN 9530
Description:
A CN local crosses Thilmany Rd. and traverses the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in ‘89 after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners and renamed it. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. The original Thilmany facility stood just out-of-frame to the left, until the majority of it was destroyed in 2013. The oldest part of that complex (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) was saved and restored to house the Kaukauna Library and some offices. The bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911.

Description:
A CN local parallels Thilmany Rd. and the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. The train was too long to fit the switchback to be shoved into the mill's stub yard all at once. Five or six woodchip gondolas can be seen parked on the grade leading up to the main line for now. Looking southeast from Thilmany Rd. (I presume). It should be labeled Stribley Rd., but it appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (out-of-frame to the right).

A CN local approaches Depot St. while headed southwest via former C&NW rails at Little Chute, WI on 18 Jun. '14. The facility at right is Crystal Print, Inc., 500 Hart Ct., an active rail customer. I believe the depot stood on the north side of the tracks (left). In 1889 it stood on the south side (right) and what was then the north end of Verstegen St. The street was re-named Wilson St. at some point and what was once the north end of it is now part of the Crystal Print property.

Description:
A CN local, with about 13 cars, approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads southwest via former Soo Line (SOO) rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016), Winnebago Co., WI on 18 May '19. Local was headed back to Neenah from Shawano. The name of the road is misspelled Towman on the signal relay case. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here (out-of-frame to the right) which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. Polish Connection) can be seen in the background. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18.

Description:
GTW 6226 traverses the east leg of the wye at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Jun. '19. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen in the center of the scene. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The white building partially visible beyond the locomotive is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) stood to the left, at what is now Arrowhead Park, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill dominated the skyline in the background for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, (out of frame to left), and an Ascension clinic (formerly Affinity clinic) at 101 Main St. occupy most of the site of the old paper mill. Neenah's newest, modern eyesore, the Gateway office building (also obviously used by Plexus), looms in the background. After razing some more cool, old buildings, construction commenced on 4 May '16 and was completed about a year later. There is no room for historic buildings and classic architecture in Future Neenah.
