A CN local crosses W. College Ave. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 16 Dec. '18. Local was returning from New London. The old Kmart store, 2400 W. College Ave., stood on the north side of College Ave. until it was demolished in '09. It dated to at least '67; it closed in '00. Due to the ridiculously convoluted border between Appleton and the Town of Grand Chute, the train was, for the most part, in the former while I was standing in the latter. |

A CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 27 Jul. '19. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is in the background. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. |

CN local passes Milepost 214 and approaches State St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails along the backside of College Ave. at Appleton, WI on 19 Oct. '15. The large brick building behind the locomotive is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building originally housed the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper, founded in 1893 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. Samuel's brothers Louis J. and Harry M. later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and also serviced the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse that stood where Walgreen's parking lot is now. That spur included a switchback to service J. Fountain Lumber Co., which stood north of the main line on the west side of State St., just out of frame to right. |

CN local assembles its train of 34 cars at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 May '16. I believe they were preparing to head toward Manitowoc, WI. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the owners didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. |

Description: |
CN local passes the former C&NW Neenah-Menasha depot as it backs through the remnants of the C&NW Neenah-Menasha yard at Neenah, WI on 5 Jun. '16. The depot was built in 1893 to replace the original ca. 1861 depot. It was restored in 1994 and is currently home to Gries Architectural Group, Inc., and Sturtevant & Associates, LLC, an insurance firm. While quite rusty, the metal C&NW sign still adorns the trackside gable above the arched window. The original C&NW Neenah depot, built ca. 1861, was located near Galloway Co., 601 S Commercial St. The depot was later moved behind the Jersild Knitting Co., 333 N. Commercial St (about 400-500 feet out of frame to the left). It was razed after new depot was completed. The border between the Twin Cities of Neenah and Menasha bisects the yard about 200 feet north of the depot, out of frame to the right. |

GTW 6226 and CN 9530 |
Description: |
A CN local appears from behind an old, seemingly idle, industrial facility (partially visible at right) as it heads northeast via former C&NW rail at Appleton, WI on 4 Mar. '18. I haven’t found much information about the facility's current or former occupants. Earthkote International, Inc. is one previous occupant and there is a small Miller Electric sign on the southwest wall. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, GTW 6226 and CN 9530. |

Description: |
A CN local parallels Milwaukee St. and approaches 7th St. as it heads north via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 19 Mar. '18. Train was headed for LSC Communications, Inc. (formerly RR Donnelley, originally Banta Corp.). Dura-Fibre, LLC, is partially visible behind the locomotive. Organized as the National Tractor & Machinery Co. at Chicago in 1916 (some references state ’18). They reorganized as the Uncle Sam Tractor and Machinery Co. ca. Mar. ’18 and moved to Menasha, WI ca. Feb. ‘19. They constructed a new 60’ x 125’ factory and 25’ x 40’ office building at 344 6th St. and erected 2 additions in ’20, with further expansion in ’22. The company reorganized as Wisconsin Automotive Corp. ca. ’23 in order to add automobiles to its line of products, particularly the Harris Six. They went out of business sometime between ’24 and ’28. The Neenah Shoe Co. occupied the plant in ’28. The Wisconsin Container Corp. was organized ca. ’31 to manufacture solid fiber and corrugated containers at this facility. The company was acquired by Menasha Corp. ca. ’69 and became their Solid Fibre Division. On 8 Feb. ’73, Menasha Corp. was granted a trademark for their “Grain-tainer” fiberboard grain doors for boxcars, but I’m not positive if they were made here or at another Menasha Corp. facility. Menasha Corp. sold the facility in ’04 and the name was changed to Dura-Fibre at some point. |

Description: |
CN local crosses the former joint MILW/SOO bridge over the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River at Neenah, WI on 19 Mar. '18. As you can see, construction of the new pedestrian bridge is nearing completion. The new bridge is part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. A similar bridge over the North Channel (Menasha Channel) is nearing completion in Menasha. I'm looking forward to utilizing the new trail sections, but I will miss the once panoramic view of this railroad bridge. The Menasha bridge will not be as close to the railroad bridge and will provide a view heretofore only attainable with a boat. |

A CN local parallels Harrison St. and approaches the W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) as it returns to the south end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 10 Aug. '18. In the background, a container train approaches the W. Bell St. overpass. Container train had two locomotives, CN 2259 and CN 2156. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background at left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about half-a-mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The silo of American Colloid Co., 901 Acco Ave., an active rail customer, is visible in the background, near the center of the photograph. A remnant of the former C&NW main line can be seen at far left, on the other side of the clump of trees. |

An interesting CN local parallels Pacific St. as it heads south via former MILW rails at Menasha, WI on 12 Aug. '18. Train consisted of two locomotives and a caboose. I was thrilled to espy WC 16 bringing up the rear of the consist. It was awesome to see a former MILW caboose on former MILW rails, and it isn't very often that I get to watch a caboose in a moving train. The 9th St. grade crossing is in the background. |

This was my first encounter with a train here since the new Loop-the-Lake bridge opened to the public (the ribbon cutting ceremony for this and the similar bridge in Menasha was held 23 Jun. '18). The pair of new bridges are part of Neenah and Menasha's Loop-the-Lake project to connect existing recreational trails in the Twin Cities. This new view of the railroad bridge is interesting, but I will miss the once panoramic view of this bridge from the river bank. The Neenah-Menasha YMCA, Island Shores Retirement Community, N. Commercial St. Bridge, and Neenah Paper mill (an active rail customer) are visible in the background to the right. |

Description: |
A CN local crosses Thilmany Rd. and traverses the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in ‘89 after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners and renamed it. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. The original Thilmany facility stood just out-of-frame to the left, until the majority of it was destroyed in 2013. The oldest part of that complex (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) was saved and restored to house the Kaukauna Library and some offices. The bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. |

A CN local parallels Thilmany Rd. and the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions paper mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Sep. '18. The train was too long to fit the switchback to be shoved into the mill's stub yard all at once. Five or six woodchip gondolas can be seen parked on the grade leading up to the main line for now. Looking southeast from Thilmany Rd. (I presume). It should be labeled Stribley Rd., but it appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (out-of-frame to the right). |
