A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 Aug. '20. The new concrete railroad ties at left are stacked next to the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible through the trees at right. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. The north leg of the wye bisects the scene. |

| Description: |
A CN train parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads south past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 23 Jul. '23. The train was passing a halted northbound train and had three locomotives, CN 3826 and CN 3820 pulling, as well as CN 2894 mid-train. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible above the trains. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from that building; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard, built by WC in 1882. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built. A 1909 map shows the yard still here, a 1936 map depicts both the old and new yards. |
