Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2020, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Title:  GTW 4907, et al.
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. as it crosses over from the yard lead to the passing siding at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Jan. '20. Local was preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, GTW 4907 and CN 9530. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. The Winneconne Ave. overpass can be seen in the background at right. The guardrail in the foreground denotes the former Caroline St. grade crossing. The pair of telephone poles toward the right stand at the former Adams St. grade crossing.

GTW 4907 and CN 9530
Title:  GTW 4907 and CN 9530
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Jan. '20. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

CRLE 19314
Title:  CRLE 19314
Description:  CRLE 19314 spotted at Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., on 11 Jan. '20. I was intrigued by the boxcar’s reporting mark, not the senseless vandalism. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, previously Eggers Industries, was founded as Hardwood Products Co. in 1910. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

CN 3189, et al.
Title:  CN 3189, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight passes Chapman Ave. and approaches N. Lake St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 25 Jan. '20. Train had three locomotives, CN 3189 and CN 2889 pulling as well as CN 2854 mid-train. The boxcars at right rest in a small ancillary yard behind Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI), an active rail customer. The Hwy. 41 overpass can be seen in the background. The first highway bridge over the then SOO railroad tracks there was built when Hwy. 41 was relocated to what was then the rural outskirts of the Fox Cities. The project commenced in the late-1930s and continued into the 1940s. The relocation allowed for expansion to a 4-lane highway (‘superhighway’ or ‘belt line’), as well as bypassing the congestion of the downtowns of Neenah, Menasha, and Appleton. On 18 Apr. ’36, the State Highway Commission of Wis. authorized “construction of an overhead bridge in Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., on the proposed route of U.S. Highway 41.” The overpass project was referred to as the Neenah Belt Line Overhead.

Title:  CN 3067, CN 2854, et al.
Description:  A CN unit train of tank cars passes a halted through freight and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 25 Jan. '20. The unit train had two locomotives, CN 3067 and CN 3149. The through freight had three locomotives, CN 3189 and CN 2889 pulling as well as CN 2854 mid-train. The remnant of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., stands at left. It was built in 1902, after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. By the 1950s the facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. It appears to be used for storage now, and has been for quite a while. The 1891 WC (later SOO) depot stood where the parking lot in the foreground now is. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

CN 3222
Title:  CN 3222
Description:  A CN container train passes the Hwy. 41 overpass and approaches Ehlers Rd. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 26 Jan. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3222 pulling and CN 3047 mid-train. The facility partially visible at right is Essity, formerly SCA Tissue until 14 Jun. '17, originally Wisconsin Tissue Mills, 825 Ehlers Rd., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing). It used to receive rail service, but has not for quite some time. Green Bay Rd. can be seen at left.

Title:  CN 9530, GTW 4907, CN 4705
Description:  One CN local pauses in front of the depot/yard office as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 1 Feb. '20. After finishing here, the local will head for Little Chute and Kaukauna. Meanwhile, another CN local rests behind the depot/yard office as it waits to enter the yard on its way back from Kimberly and Combined Locks via a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. There used to be a diamond right about where the front truck of CN 9530 rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building behind the depot/yard office is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The train is passing under the approaches of the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) at the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. Seeing as it was, in some regards, a bridge to nowhere and many citizens of Menasha have Polish ancestry, it was jokingly referred to as the Polish Connection. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18. On 1 May '19, the interchange was named in honor of a local politician. I vehemently disagree with the choice made by the powers-that-be. I steadfastly believe that First Sergeant Elmer J. Burr would be a much more worthy namesake for this prominent location. First Sgt. Burr was a Wisconsin National Guard Soldier from Menasha, WI, who earned the Medal of Honor, posthumously, for his heroism and self-sacrifice on Christmas Eve of 1942 at Buna, New Guinea. The former SOO rails run parallel to the left. This is the spot where N. Lake St. ends and W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. begins, although they haven't reinstalled that sign yet. Modern maps tend to omit the W. from W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign, some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W.

Description:  A CN local works the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 8 Feb. '20. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

The train is transitioning from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

The former C&NW depot/yard office stands at left. The station sign says Neenah but it is actually located in Menasha. The border between the Twin Cities is about 750 feet to the south (right). The depot/yard office was built by the C&NW in 1965 at a cost of $15,000. St. Patrick's Catholic Church can be seen in the distance above the depot/yard office. The spire of St. Thomas Episcopal Church can be seen above the locomotive's cab.

Description:  A CN local crosses Garfield Ave. as it works the northwest end of the former C&NW yard on Doty Island at Menasha, WI on 21 Feb. '20. The former Graphic Packaging International facility, originally Marathon Corp., 160 Washington St., stands at left. The facility has been used for storage since Graphic Packaging International abandoned 228 hardworking Americans by moving production out-of-state at the end of 2016. The north end of the C&NW freight house can be seen at right. The freight house was built by the C&NW in 1965 at a cost of $400,000. The turnout and track leading into it, as well as some yard tracks, were torn out in Sep. 2013. I do not know if they use the entire building, but the southern portion is currently home to FRSTeam by Gunderson, 268 Sanford St., Menasha, WI.
