CN 3119, CN 3086, et al.
Title:  CN 3119, CN 3086, et al.
Description:  CN through freight heads south at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 8 Oct. '17. Train had four locomotives, CN 3119 and CN 3086 up front, as well as CN 2805 and CN 2923 mid-train. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Part of the fence on this side of the tracks has been temporarily removed, they were preparing to replace some of the turnouts on this end of the yard.

IC 9625
Title:  IC 9625
Description:  CN local crosses Towmen Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, WI on 12 Oct. '17. Shawano Junction is in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16). This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The tracks in the foreground are the crossover to the former C&NW rails. Train was returning from Shawano. MillTown Paper, Inc., 1286 Ehlers Rd., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), a rail customer, is in the background.

Last Remaining Diamond in Appleton, WI
Title:  Last Remaining Diamond in Appleton, WI
Description:  The last remaining diamond in Appleton, WI, as seen from the W. College Ave. overpass on 13 Oct. '17. The diamond forms the junction of two industrial spurs on the CN, former SOO, rails at Appleton Junction, WI. The facility at left is occupied by WOW Logistics and PODS Self-Storage. The other spur leads to R. Sabee Co., LLC/Draper Products, Inc./Circle Machinery & Supply Co. (out-of-frame to the left). Unfortunately neither spur has seen a revenue car for quite some time. The middle track formed an interchange with the C&NW and leads to their yard at Appleton Junction, WI. The turnouts at lower right are remnants of the former SOO yard. The tracks at far right are the former SOO main line, which descends a grade to pass under W. Spencer St. and the former C&NW main line. An old caboose is partially visible in the background. It is painted as RI 17177, but most references state it was not their caboose, but MILW.

CN 9473
Title:  CN 9473
Description:  CN local pauses next to the station sign while working in the former SOO yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 13 Oct. '17. The depot stood a few blocks to the east, on a long spur that from the main line and along W. College Ave. into downtown Appleton. The depot was razed in 1970 and the spur was pulled up a decade or two after that (although the spur is still depicted on CN's interactive system map). Local was servicing Presto Products, partially visible at left. Founded in 1961, it is currently possessed by the Rank Group. Previous owners include the Coca-Cola Co., the Reynolds Metals Co., and Alcoa Inc. The facility at right has two indoor spurs, but the turnout leading to them has been gone for quite a while. Most of the large facility seems idle, but some portions of it appear to used by someone. The main line forms the border between the Town of Grand Chute and the City of Appleton for this portion of that often convoluted border.

CN 9473
Title:  CN 9473
Description:  CN local approaches N. Lynndale Dr. as it heads southeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 15 Oct. '17. I believe they just picked up an empty centerbeam flatcar from Wisconsin Building Supply. This is the branch that runs to New London, WI, but I'm not sure if the local ran all the way to New London or not. It used to be a main line which ran to Clintonville, where it split to continue northwestward to Eland and points beyond, or continue northeastward to Shawano and points beyond. W. College Ave. crosses the tracks near the center of the scene.

While I usually attempt to avoid telephone poles, I purposefully included this haggard old one because the small, red electrical box with a railroad lock is from a classic RR signal manufacturer (unfortunately I forgot which one).

The rainbow was more impressive with the naked eye.

IC 3107
Title:  IC 3107
Description:  CN local passes the Rat River Wildlife Area and approaches the junction with the former C&NW right-of-way, now the Wiouwash State Trail, as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI on 15 Oct. '17. Train was returning from Waupaca, WI. The clumps of trees to either side of the locomotive mark the former site of a steam locomotive servicing facility. If the direction of view in the photograph (http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/Content.aspx?dsNav=N:4294963828-4294963814&dsRecordDetails=R:IM24898) on the Wisconsin Historical Society website is labeled accurately, a coaling tower and other structures stood to the left of the train. A water tower and other structures stood to the right. Remnants of the foundations on the right side are still in place, remnants on the left side were demolished in May of this year.

WC 16
Title:  WC 16
Description:  CN caboose, WC 16, rests on former MILW rails at Hilbert, WI on 18 Oct. '17. The ghost of the WC logo is visible under the bay window. I was starting to worry about this caboose because I hadn't spotted it in its usual hiding places in Neenah, Menasha, or Oshkosh lately, so I was pleased to find it here. The water tower was repainted earlier this year, unfortunately they painted over the neat railroad scene which was once depicted on it.

I was starting to worry about this caboose because I hadn't spotted it in its usual hiding places in Neenah, Menasha, or Oshkosh lately, so I was pleased to find it here. The former MILW depot is partially visible background left. The stop sign on the main line in the background is mounted on a gate which protects the former SOO main line at Hilbert Junction. The MILW main line used to continue on to Green Bay, WI and points beyond. The active rails currently end between Crosstown Rd. and Ott Rd., where Lund Construction occasionally receives a freight car. The remains of the right-of-way to Green Bay is the Fox River State Trail.

Description:  CN local passes Sherwood Elevator and crosses Military Rd./Hwy. M at Sherwood, WI, while headed toward Menasha via former joint MILW/SOO rails on 22 Oct. '17. Sherwood Elevator, N599 Military Rd., Sherwood, WI, has been owned, operated, and expanded by the Kress family since they purchased it in 1951. Their grain terminal, out of frame to the right, has a capacity of 1 million bushels. Unfortunately the elevator has not received rail service for quite a while.

Description:  CN local passes Intertape Polymer Group, IPG, 741 4th St., Menasha, WI, as it heads west via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 22 Oct. '17. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Manitowoc St. on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO tracks. It’s the same facility, but the address changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69 but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc. purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99. The remnants of a spur lead to what was once an overhead door to the left of the locomotive (underneath the company's sign). The rails are still in place, but the turnout was removed quite a while ago (the facility still receives rail service (covered hoppers and tank cars) from the opposite end of the building).

Description:  CN through freight bisects the CHS Larsen Cooperative - Readfield grain terminal and fertilizer facility as it heads east via former SOO rails at North Readfield, WI on 28 Oct. '17. Larsen Cooperative merged with CHS, Inc. on 1 Sep. '12. At right, a railcar mover positions covered hoppers for loading. The idle Proppant Specialists, LLC, facility is partially visible at left. Train had three locomotives, CN 2827 and CN 2807 up front and CN 2909 mid-train. Some confuse North Readfield with slightly larger Readfield, 1 mile to the south. This is likely due, in part, because everything in the former has a mailing address of the latter. The pair of unincorporated communities are distinct, and the latter has no railroad tracks.

Description:  CN local approaches Washington St. as it emerges from U.S. Paper Mills Corp., 69 Washington St., at Menasha, WI on 8 Nov. '17. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small industrial island for many years.
