Title:  CN 4704
Description:  CN local clears Garfield St. and passes the former C&NW yard office as it works in the former C&NW Neenah-Menasha yard at Menasha, WI on 10 Apr. '16. The station sign says Neenah but it is actually located in Menasha. The border between the 2 cities is about 750 feet to the south.

GTW 6221 and C&NW Neenah-Menasha, WI Depot
Title:  GTW 6221 and C&NW Neenah-Menasha, WI Depot
Description:  CN local passes the former C&NW Neenah-Menasha depot as it backs through the remnants of the C&NW Neenah-Menasha yard at Neenah, WI on 5 Jun. '16. The depot was built in 1893 to replace the original ca. 1861 depot. It was restored in 1994 and is currently home to Gries Architectural Group, Inc., and Sturtevant & Associates, LLC, an insurance firm. While quite rusty, the metal C&NW sign still adorns the trackside gable above the arched window. The original C&NW Neenah depot, built ca. 1861, was located near Galloway Co., 601 S Commercial St. The depot was later moved behind the Jersild Knitting Co., 333 N. Commercial St (about 400-500 feet out of frame to the left). It was razed after new depot was completed. The border between the Twin Cities of Neenah and Menasha bisects the yard about 200 feet north of the depot, out of frame to the right.

C&NW Spooner, WI Depot
Title:  C&NW Spooner, WI Depot
Description:  The northeast wall of the former C&NW depot at Spooner, WI on 23 Jun. '16. The opposite end of the depot receives the most attention from photographers because that is the end visitors first see when they arrive, so I thought I would post a photograph of this equally interesting end of this historic railroad structure. Constructed in the Craftsman style for the CStPM&O (CMO) in ‘02 by Ashland, WI contractor T. E. Pugh. It measured 288’ long by 32’ wide (52’ wide with the overhangs) and cost $25,000. The northern half had a second story for railroad offices. Passenger service ended in ’61. The northern half of the depot was demolished in ’63. The remaining portion has been home to the Railroad Memories Museum since ’90. The last freight train passed by in ’92.

Sheboygan, WI C&NW Freight House
Title:  Sheboygan, WI C&NW Freight House
Description:  The west and south walls of the former C&NW freight house at Sheboygan, WI on 3 Oct. '16. The wooden portion of the freight house was built by the MLS&W in 1887 (according to wisconsinhistory.org/). The 1887 Sanborn map depicts it oriented parallel to S. Water St. (now N. Commerce St.) at Pennsylvania Ave. The brick freight office was constructed on the southeast end of the building between 1887 and 1891, according to the Sanborn maps. It was built in 1887 at a cost of $2,182.63, if it is the same freight office described in the Annual Report of the Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western Railway Co., 1888. Wisconsinhistory.org/ states that it “was moved to its current location around 1898,” but it wasn’t moved very far. It was simply rotated approximately 30 degrees clockwise to its current orientation at 1134 Pennsylvania Ave., Sheboygan, WI. The northeast corner was cut off at an angle matching the track that ran parallel to S. Water St. (now N. Commerce St.). The brick freight office appears to have been rotated about 60 degrees counterclockwise and instead of being attached to the now south end of the building like it originally was, it was attached to the now east side of the building at the south end. The building was used by C&NW until the early 1960s. The Shoreland 400 Rail Trail, the former C&NW right of way, is visible in the middle of the photograph.

C&NW Menasha, WI Freight House
Title:  C&NW Menasha, WI Freight House
Description:  Looking southeast at the north end of the C&NW freight house adjacent to the CN, former C&NW, Neenah-Menasha yard at Menasha, WI on 15 Oct. '16. The depot/yard office (just out of frame to the left) and this freight house were built by the C&NW in 1965 at a cost of $15,000 and $400,000 respectively. The contractor was Consolidated Construction Co. of Appleton. The freight house is 552’ long and 50’ wide (the first 50' of this end are only about 30' wide) and could hold 11 freight cars inside. A 3,500 sq. ft. office was included on the southeast corner at Sanford St. The turnout and track leading into it, as well as some yard tracks, were torn out in Sep. 2013. I do not know if they use the entire building, but the southern portion is currently home to FRSTeam by Gunderson. The spire of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, which stands near the south end of the freight house, can be seen rising above the trees at left.

CN 4705
Title:  CN 4705
Description:  CN local passes behind the former C&NW depot after servicing Expera Specialty Solutions (originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co.) at Kaukauna, WI on 28 Jul. '17. The depot was built in 1947 at the intersection of Depot St. and Draper St. to replace the old, wooden depot. Designed in the Art Moderne style, it originally had flat roofs. The current gabled roofs were added at some point after 1983. It became known as the north side depot after 1890, when the MLS&W, later C&NW, built their large, ornate depot south of the Fox River. That depot disappeared many years ago.

Description:  A CN unit train of tank cars approaches Merritt Ave. and parallels Broad St. as it heads south via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 28 Jan. '18. The former C&NW depot and freight house stand at left. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 on Broad St. between Washington Ave. and Merritt Ave. at a cost $15,000, it opened on 1 Dec. ’84. The depot was more ornate when completed, some of its interesting architectural elements have been removed over the years. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. The depot is currently used by Clarity Care. Train had three locomotives, CN 2612, CN 5731, and CN 8877.

CN 5681, et al.
Title:  CN 5681, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Broad St. and passes the former C&NW depot as it heads north at Oshkosh, WI on 8 Jun '18. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 at a cost $15,000, it opened on 1 Dec. ’84. The depot was more ornate when completed, some of its interesting architectural elements have been removed over the years. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. The depot is currently used by Clarity Care. I used to believe that this depot replaced the older MLS&W depot which stood at Warren St. and Jay St. (both streets no longer exist but the site was southwest of the intersection of Pearl Ave. and Jackson St.), because the MLS&W was a subsidiary of the C&NW. I recently learned that both roads operated independently in Oshkosh until at least 1893, when the MLS&W was completely absorbed by the C&NW. In fact, the MLS&W also built a new stone depot in Oshkosh in 1894, to replace their older, wooden depot. Some references state, erroneously, that this depot replaced the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot. However, the C&NW operated both depots for years after this one was completed. Train had two locomotives, CN 5681 and CN 5719.

Appleton, WI C&NW Freight House
Title:  Appleton, WI C&NW Freight House
Description:  The southeast and northeast walls of the former C&NW, now CN, freight house at the yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 20 Nov. '18. Measuring 20 x 60, it was completed in Sep. 1958 along what was originally the MLS&W main line (which ran parallel to the southwest side of the building). I've always been intrigued by this neat, old building, so I was excited when I recently found it depicted as a freight house on a 1967 railroad blueprint. It seems rather small for a freight house, but I presume it was designed to supplement, not replace, the much larger freight house near downtown Appleton. The north leg of the wye can be seen.
