Sheboygan, WI C&NW Freight House
The east and south walls of the former C&NW freight house at Sheboygan, WI on 3 Oct. '16. The wooden portion of the freight house was built by the MLS&W in 1887 (according to wisconsinhistory.org/). The 1887 Sanborn map depicts it oriented parallel to S. Water St. (now N. Commerce St.) at Pennsylvania Ave. The brick freight office was constructed on the southeast end of the building between 1887 and 1891, according to the Sanborn maps. It was built in 1887 at a cost of $2,182.63, if it is the same freight office described in the Annual Report of the Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western Railway Co., 1888. Wisconsinhistory.org/ states that it “was moved to its current location around 1898,” but it wasn’t moved very far. It was simply rotated approximately 30 degrees clockwise to its current orientation at 1134 Pennsylvania Ave., Sheboygan, WI. The northeast corner was cut off at an angle matching the track that ran parallel to S. Water St. (now N. Commerce St.). The brick freight office appears to have been rotated about 60 degrees counterclockwise and instead of being attached to the now south end of the building as it originally was, it was attached to the now east side of the building at the south end. The building was used by C&NW until the early 1960s. I don't know if the darker brick addition on the right was added by the railroad or a subsequent owner of the building.
