Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2015, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

Description:  CN local approaches the station sign as it pulls 4 cars southward through the former SOO yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 21 Mar. '15. Train was heading back to Neenah after working Shawano. The SOO depot stood a few blocks to the southwest, along W. College Ave., on a long spur that ran south from this main line into downtown Appleton. The depot was razed in 1970 and the spur was pulled up a decade or two after that (although the spur is still depicted on CN's interactive system map).

The pedestrian bridge over the slough at Herb and Dolly Smith Park is visible on the right, the fish were bitin’. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are behind the locomotives. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

Description:  CN local crosses Olde Oneida St. at Mile Post 120 as it pulls 10 cars westward through the Flats via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 26 Mar. '15. Train was heading back to the yard at Appleton Junction after working Kimberly and Combined Locks and had two locomotives, Grand Trunk Western. The train is traversing what used to be a 6-track yard decades ago. In 2014 the last remnant of the yard, a passing siding, was pulled up. The C&NW depot stood where the row of trees is, lower right. The MILW had a small yard off to the right, their depot stood in the grassy area at the middle of the right edge of photograph.

The diamond was located just out of frame to the left. Train was headed back the former C&NW yard at North Green Bay. The friendly engineer is waving to a little girl, out of frame to right, who also likes trains. She and her parents were walking the trail on the former MILW right-of-way and they stopped to watch when they noticed the train approaching.

Train was headed back the former C&NW yard at North Green Bay. Fox River Grain Elevator looms in the background. Fox River Grain Elevator is part of Fox River Valley Ethanol, near Oshkosh, WI. They were formerly GB Elevator and Utica Energy, respectively, until they were purchased and renamed by Ace Ethanol, based in Stanley, WI, in 2013. The elevator was once adorned with a pair of large GB&W logos. Other former names for this elevator include Didion Elevator (partially visible in blue letters at the top) and Strid Elevator. From its founding in 1883 until 26 Jun. '13, the massive paper mill was Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers). The rubble in the foreground is the remnants of the old Thilmany mill, which was mostly demolished in 2013. Part of the original mill was saved and will be restored.

Description:  CN local crosses Oak St./Hwy. E while servicing Waupaca Foundry, Plant 1, out of frame to left, at Waupaca, WI on 4 Apr. '15. The former SOO freight house is partially visible on the right. This is the 2nd WC/SOO freight house at Waupaca. It was built in early 1949 after the original freight house burned down in Nov. '48. The bowling alley next door to the south caught fire and the flames spread to the freight house. The original 1871 WC passenger depot was converted into a freight house after the 2nd depot was completed in Apr. ‘81. The 1st freight house had been moved from its original location to the current freight house location ca. 1901, when the 2nd depot was moved to the west side of Guard St., now Oak St.

Description:  CN through freight passes under the Main St. overpass while an old, formerly rail-served industry on Union St. is being dismantled at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 7 Apr. '15. I don't know what its last primary function was, but it was labeled as an ice house on the 1913 Sanborn map. The parking lot on the left is where the depot stood. The SOO/WC depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks between 1891 and 1895. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest.

Description:  A well-weathered SOO wheat stalk covered hopper was one of three spotted at Country Visions Cooperative's Rockwood Fertilizer Plant at Rockwood, WI on 16 Apr. '15. The facility is serviced by CN via former C&NW rails. Unfortunately the active rails terminate here and the rest of the old main line from here to Denmark is now the Devil's River State Trail.

Description:  A Trackmobile Magnum 4250 TM appears toy-like as it shuttles flatcar loads of plate steel past the massive Briess Malt & Ingredients Co. facility at Manitowoc, WI on 16 Apr. '15. The facility is serviced by CN via former C&NW rails. Briess purchased the facility from Busch Agricultural Resources, Inc. in 2014, after it had been idle since 2011. It was started by the Rahr brewing family in 1847. They owned it until the Rahr Malting Co., a.k.a. Manitowoc Malting Plant, was sold to Anheuser-Busch in 1962. While the west side is still adorned with familiar Budweiser bottles and cans today, it was adorned with the Kingsbury beer logos when I was a kid.

Description:  CN local picks up some empty flat cars from the small yard adjacent to the massive Briess Malt & Ingredients Co. facility via former C&NW rails at Manitowoc, WI on 17 Apr. '15. Briess purchased the facility from Busch Agricultural Resources, Inc. in 2014, after it had been idle since 2011. It was started by the Rahr brewing family in 1847. They owned it until the Rahr Malting Co., a.k.a. Manitowoc Malting Plant, was sold to Anheuser-Busch in 1962. While the west side is adorned with familiar Budweiser bottles and cans today, it was adorned with Kingsbury beer logos when I was a kid. The tracks in the foreground are remnants of the small yard that used to service one of two car ferries that used to tie up at Manitowoc, the slip is out of frame to right. This particular ferry still runs, but it no longer carries rail cars across the floating section of US 10 between Wisconsin and Michigan.

Numbered SOO 99079 while on their roster but restored as WC 104 when it was presented to the Menasha Historical Society by Leonard Murray, president of SOO, in Jul. '71, during 100th anniversary celebration of founding of WC at Menasha. The protective shelter, designed to mimic a SOO depot, was donated by George Banta, Jr., a Menasha industrialist and railfan. The dedication ceremony was held on 18 Jun. '72. The caboose received a recent facelift and will be rededicated on 16 May '15, hopefully it will be open for tours. The shelter originally had station signs with SOO logos on both ends, but those signs have disappeared. A nice plaque was also part of the original display, but has also disappeared.

The track for interchange with the former GB&W is rising in the background. This was a chance encounter, otherwise I would have attempted to shoot around the small tree growing on the embankment. While it is clearly visible in the photograph, it was not so visible in the view finder.
