CN 8931
Description:
A southbound CN container train passes the depot/yard office as it heads southwest through an unusually empty former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI at 1604 hours on 9 Apr. '16. Normally this view of the facility is blocked by the cars in the yard. I've never seen this yard completely empty. I haven’t seen cars spotted here since at least 31 Jan. '16. The taller building partially visible on the right sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. Train had two locomotives, CN 8961 pulling and CN 8931 pushing.

Description:
A CN container train passes the Main St. overpass and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 2 May '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 2282 pulling and CN 8931 mid-train. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. Looking southwest from Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye.

CN through freight approaches E. Snell Rd. and passes a halted through freight as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Oshkosh, WI on 23 Jul. '17. The moving train had 2 locomotives, CN 2653 and CN 8940, and the halted train had at least five locomotives, including CN 2118, CN 2199, CN 2340. I was standing at what used to be the former C&NW grade crossing. The border between the City of Oshkosh and the Town of Oshkosh is quite convoluted in this area. The land to the left of the active rails in front of me and the land on both sides of the active rails behind me is the Town of Oshkosh, but the land to the right of the active rails in front of me is the City of Oshkosh. Go about 400' behind me and the land on both sides of the active rails is the City of Oshkosh.

A CN through freight crosses E. 14th Ave. and passes the remnants of the former C&NW yard as it heads northeast at Oshkosh, WI on 18 Jun. '18. Train had six locomotives, CN 8940, CN 2446, CN 2335, CN 5798, CSX 7811, GECX 9xxx. A cut of cars rests by the depot/yard office. I was thrilled to find these cars here, because I thought it meant the local had made a daylight run (the Oshkosh local seems to usually be a nocturnal run). I waited for quite a while, but didn't see or hear any other signs of the local's presence. A unit train of tank cars is halted on the main line out-of-frame to the left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

Description:
CN container train crosses the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads south past a halted through freight at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 24 Dec. '16. The guardrail marks the location of the former Sherry St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The white building beyond the train on the right is what remains of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility at 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s this facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. The Main St. overpass is in the background at left.

A southbound CN container train passes the depot/yard office as it heads southwest through an unusually empty former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 9 Apr. '16. Normally this view of the facility is blocked by the cars in the yard. I've never seen this yard completely empty. I haven’t seen cars spotted here since at least 31 Jan. '16. Train had two locomotives, CN 8961 pulling and CN 8931 pushing. The new bascule bridge over the Fox River is visible background right, it was completed in Aug. '13 to replace the 1899 swing bridge.

A CN container train crosses Kampo Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 24 Apr. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3080 and CN 8963. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, runs parallel along the other side of the train. A pair of facilities owned by Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (WSI), both originally Kampo warehouses, stand in the background to the left. Both are home to multiple tenants and have spurs for rail service, but the turnout connecting them to the passing siding was removed quite a while ago.
