CN 8845
Title:  CN 8845
Description:  A CN container train crosses Hwy. M as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Medina Station, Town of Dale, Outagamie Co., WI on a foggy 21 Jan. '17. Train had two locomotives, CN 8823 pulling and CN 8845 mid-train. The WC built a depot here somewhere between 1871, when the line was laid, and 1889, when I recently found it depicted on a map. The site was labeled as Medina Station on maps until at least 1915. The depot stood approximately where the CN microwave tower now stands, just out-of-frame to the right.

CN 8846
Title:  CN 8846
Description:  A CN container train passes a halted through freight and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 7 Sep. '20. It looks like some new, concrete railroad ties will be installed on the main line soon. I've never seen these around here before. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen near the center of the scene. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye (partially visible to the right). Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, stands in the background to the left. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background to the right. Train had two locomotives, CN 2282 pulling as well as CN 8846 pushing.

CN 2849, CN 2885, CN 8851, CN 2169
Title:  CN 2849, CN 2885, CN 8851, CN 2169
Description:  A northbound CN through freight passes the depot/yard office and the sad remnants of the former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 24 Dec. '16. Train had four locomotives, CN 2849, CN 2885, CN 8851, CN 2169. The depot/yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet. The yard was torn up in Aug. '16. There had been no cars spotted here since at least 31 Jan. '16. They did leave the passing siding and team track.

CN 8856, et al.
Title:  CN 8856, et al.
Description:  A CN container train approaches Pioneer Dr. and crosses the Fox River via the CN bascule bridge as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Oshkosh, WI on 11 May '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 8856 and CN 5695. The bridge was completed in Aug. '13 to replace the 1899 swing bridge. The interesting and historic brick industrial facility at 32-36 Broad St., was erected by Oshkosh’s J. A. Day & Co. in 1870. The flour mill was built for George M. Wakefield, et al., to replace the earlier Oshkosh City Flouring Mills, which stood here until destroyed by fire on 17 May ‘70. That large, old, wooden flour mill (built in ‘56) had been purchased by A. S. Trow & Co. in ‘69 (Wakefield was a partner in that company). When the current facility was completed in ‘70, it became known as the Wakefield Mill, or Wakefield’s Mill, operated by the Wakefield Bros. It continued to be referred to as the Wakefield Mill until at least ‘95, operated by Woodford, Foote & Co. in ‘76, and then Foote Bros. & Co. from about ‘77 until ‘90. It operated as the Foote-Cornish Milling Co. from ‘91 until about the end of 1900. It was home to the Wisconsin Pulp Plaster Co. circa ‘04-‘07. The Baker Paper Co., founded in ‘99, moved into the facility in Aug. ‘14 and owned it until ca. 1993. It is currently home to the Oshkosh-area United Way, et al.

Description:  A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Aug. '19. Train had four locomotives, CN 3856, CREX 1505, CN 8861, CN 8880. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are partially visible at right. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

Title:  CN 2159, BCOL 4625, CN 5431, CN 8862
Description:  CN through freight has halted adjacent to Harrison St., split its train, and is now shoving 13 cars into the south end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 4 Jul. ’14. I presume they were going to drop off one or more of those cars before recoupling to the remainder of their train, which included a string of over 60 loaded Herzog ballast cars, and continuing on their way. I was not able to stay long enough to find out for sure.

Title:  CN 5702 and CN 8865
Description:  A CN container train traverses the west leg of the wye and approaches the Main St. overpass at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 1 Oct. '20. The locomotives are passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background to the right. The new, concrete railroad ties which were recently laid out next to the main line have even more recently been picked up and re-stacked.

CN 2128, CN 2163, and CN 8867
Title:  CN 2128, CN 2163, and CN 8867
Description:  A southbound CN unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers passes the depot/yard office and the sad remnants of the former C&NW yard at Oshkosh, WI on 29 May '17. The depot/yard office sits at the approximate location of the C&NW’s South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north.

CN 8875
Title:  CN 8875
Description:  A CN through freight passes Daufen Park and passes the historic Dale feed mill as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Dale, WI, on 8 Aug. '20. The Dale feed mill was built between 1889 and 1908, when it was Northern Grain Co. By ’10 it was the Western Elevator Co. (Western Grain Co. in some references). It was the Steffen’s Elevator Co. from ca. ’21 until at least ’68 (it was purchased by John H. Steffens and later run by his sons). It was Dale Feed Service from ca. ’73 until at least ’81. It has been home to Earth Sense Energy Systems, Inc., W9715 State Rd. 96, Dale, WI, since ’96. The depot once stood between the train and the feed mill. Train had three locomotives, CN 2246 and CN 5727 pulling, as well as CN 8875 mid-train.

Description:  A CN through freight rests along Hwy. 41 at Snells, WI on 28 Jan. '18. I can't tell if it has halted along the former SOO main line or the former C&NW main line, probably the latter. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.
