IC 3138 and EJE 703
Description:
A CN local momentarily fouls W. 2nd St. while setting out cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 29 Nov. '18. After finishing up here, the local will continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. A few blocks away, another local waits to enter the yard after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. Silly me, I thought that current law prohibits any of us from attempting to “drive any vehicle through, around, or under any crossing gate or barrier at a railroad crossing while such gate or barrier is closed or is being opened or closed.” Evidently, this truck driver feels that the law does not apply to him. The near side gate is just out-of-frame to the right; you need to zoom in to see the far side gate partially visible between the locomotive and the truck.

EJE 703 and CN 4721
Description:
A CN local momentarily fouls W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 30 Dec. '18. After completing their work here, the local willcontinue on to Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, stands to the right. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, can be seen beyond Carter's Caboose. Built in 1916, the walls include some intricate brickwork. The keystones above the windows (now concealed) depict bowling pins. Of course, all of the interesting brickwork, painstakingly crafted by skilled masons 102 years ago, has been defaced and obscured with cheap metal siding, which Miller Electric applied at some point after they acquired the historic facility ca. 1975.

CN 4100 and EJE 703
Description:
A CN local rests at Millview Dr. on the east leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 9 Feb. '19. Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., is partially visible in the background at right. Up until 2009, this train would have been obscured by the P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years (the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874). Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down (demolition was completed in May 2009).

EJE 703
Description:
EJE 703 sorts cars at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 27 Jul. '19. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

EJE 703
Description:
A CN local crosses S. Olde Oneida St. as it heads east via former C&NW rails in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 31 Aug. '19. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. The C&NW depot stood just out-of-frame to the right. The MILW depot stood just out-of-frame to the left. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

IC 3129 and EJE 703
Description:
A CN local passes the depot/yard office as it heads southwest past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 14 Sep. '19. I believe the local was headed back to Neenah from Kaukauna and was slowing to stop here to pick up a string of cars. There used to be a diamond in front of where the depot/yard office sits, about where the sidewalk leading to the front door crosses the tracks, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. The MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893.

EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568
Description:
Looking south over the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard from the Winneconne Ave. overpass at Neenah, WI, on 18 Apr. '20. Locomotives include EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568. I wish I could photograph this scene without the handrail in the foreground, but the morons who designed this overpass (with the tacit approval of the morons who pretend to be the local government) only incorporated a sidewalk on one side of the bridge, the north side. There is no provision for bicycles to safely cross the overpass, except to use the unusually narrow sidewalk. However, the sidewalk is too narrow for bicycles and pedestrians to safely pass each other. Sure, bicyclists are legally entitled to use the roadway, but you will risk your life if you are foolish enough to exercise that legal right. The majority of motorists drive like idiots on Winneconne Ave. (as well as just about every other freeway, interstate, highway, county road, country road, back road, gravel road, dirt road, access road, public street, private street, driveway, pioneer trail, parking lot, and all-too-often sidewalk, in the United States). The Main St. overpass was ill-designed in the same manner. This ineptly designed overpass was constructed ca. 1988, so we will probably have to wait 20 years, or more, for an overpass with sufficient sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides.

EJE 703
Description:
A CN local pauses on the former C&NW siding at Stroebe, WI, on 3 Jul. '20. Local was waiting for a northbound local. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The train is resting under the approaches of the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) at the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18. The former SOO rails run parallel just out-of-frame to the left.

'23. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The facility visible in the background is Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (WSI). This facility has not received rail service for quite a while, but could be served via former SOO rails. The C&NW rails were laid in 1861. The SOO rails were originally laid by the W&N in 1920.

A CN train passes the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, depot as it sets out cars at Appleton Junction, WI, on 16 Apr. '23. The train continued on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond right about where the front truck of EJE 703 rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible above EJE 703 is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

I know the quality of this photo is poor, but I waited for 4 days to catch this trainload of my unit’s equipment leaving Ft. McCoy, unfortunately this is the best shot I got. Description:
WSOR local parked, silent and dark, on the former MILW rails on the north side of Hwy. MM at Rhine Mills in the Town of Rhine, Sheboygan Co., WI on 17 Oct. '15. The small community of Rhine Mills was adjacent to a quarry and lime kiln built by the Sheboygan Valley Land and Lime Co. I don’t know if there was a station here, but there was a spur off to service the quarry and lime kiln. Rhine Mills included a school, saw mill, grain mill, blacksmith, general store, saloon, boarding house, et al. The remnants of the lime kilns still stand and are easily visible from the hwy. about 1200 feet of west of the grade crossing. This site was approximately Milepost 148 on MILW’s Milwaukee to Iron Mountain line. I had encountered this train at Elkhart Lake earlier in the day. I did not stick around there because I thought this train would soon be on its way back toward Plymouth and points south. I waited in Plymouth, hoping to shoot the train as it passed the former C&NW and MILW depots there, for 5 hours but the train never came through. After giving up and heading home, I was surprised, and disappointed, to discover it parked here. Oh well.
