Title:  WSOR 3803 and WSOR 3805
Description:  WSOR local approaches Fond du Lac Ave./Hwy. 44/Hwy. 23 as it hauls a baker's dozen of freight cars back to Horicon via former MILW rails at Ripon, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May 15. The 1913 Sanborn map depicts five tracks at this grade crossing, only this one remains. The MILW depot was just out of frame to left. Ripon Area Builders, in the background, is the former site of the 40,000 bu. CM&StP elevator. The MILW owned many elevators along its lines, and then leased them to the Milwaukee Elevator Co., if the information I have read is accurate.

WSOR 3803 and WSOR 3805
Title:  WSOR 3803 and WSOR 3805
Description:  WSOR local passes a grain elevator and approaches E. Franklin St. as it hauls a baker's dozen of freight cars back to Horicon via former MILW rails at Waupun, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May 15. I believe the elevator is Farmers' Elevator, but I forgot to make note of the sign while I was there. It used to be operated by the Milwaukee Elevator Co. The MILW owned many elevators along its lines, and then leased them to the Milwaukee Elevator Co., if the information I have read is accurate. The depot stood here, between these two sets of tracks at E. Franklin St. Built ca. 1856 when Milwaukee & Horicon Railroad came to town. The depot was moved ca. 1981. Technically it still exists, but it is in deplorable condition: https://www.flickr.com/photos/11741544@N05/8239520147/. The station sign is at the far right of the photograph.

WSOR 3803 and WSOR 3805
Title:  WSOR 3803 and WSOR 3805
Description:  WSOR local crosses the former junction with C&NW as it hauls a baker's dozen of freight cars back to Horicon via former MILW rails at Burnett, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May 15. The C&NW right-of-way is now the Wild Goose State Trail. The trail deviates from the right-of-way for a short distance from here because part of the C&NW rails are still in place to service Peachey Bros. Elevator, partially visible background left. Another part of their facility could be serviced by the MILW, out of frame to left, and that spur is also still in place. I am pretty sure the union depot stood right here, the grassy area foreground center. The station sign is at far right.

MILW/WSOR Horicon, WI Depot
Title:  MILW/WSOR Horicon, WI Depot
Description:  WSOR local has parked next to the former MILW depot at Horicon, WI after completing a trip to Oshkosh and back on Memorial Day, 25 May ‘15. The current depot dates to ca. 1915. The Wis. Railroad Commission, after hearing complaints from the Horicon Advancement Assn., ordered MILW to construct a new depot. The previous depot, built ca. 1888, was deemed too small, outdated, and unsanitary. I haven't been able to determine if this was new construction or if the existing depot was expanded and updated (comparing historic photographs it seems like the later).

WSOR 3809, WSOR 3813, and WSOR 3803
Title:  WSOR 3809, WSOR 3813, and WSOR 3803
Description:  WSOR local parked, silent and dark, on the former MILW rails on the north side of Hwy. MM at Rhine Mills in the Town of Rhine, Sheboygan Co., WI on 17 Oct. '15. The small community of Rhine Mills was adjacent to a quarry and lime kiln built by the Sheboygan Valley Land and Lime Co. I don’t know if there was a station here, but there was a spur off to service the quarry and lime kiln. Rhine Mills included a school, saw mill, grain mill, blacksmith, general store, saloon, boarding house, et al. The remnants of the lime kilns still stand and are easily visible from the hwy. about 1200 feet of west of the grade crossing. This site was approximately Milepost 148 on MILW’s Milwaukee to Iron Mountain line. I had encountered this train at Elkhart Lake earlier in the day. I did not stick around there because I thought this train would soon be on its way back toward Plymouth and points south. I waited in Plymouth, hoping to shoot the train as it passed the former C&NW and MILW depots there, for 5 hours but the train never came through. After giving up and heading home, I was surprised, and disappointed, to discover it parked here. Oh well.
