IC 9562 and GTW 5854
Title:  IC 9562 and GTW 5854
Description:  CN local crawls onto the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services Expera Specialty Solutions (out of frame to left) at Kaukauna, WI on 11 Aug. '15. Bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. The rails used to run past the red flag at the end of the bridge to the C&NW's Kaukauna yard, shops and round house. A line also branched off to go to Manitowoc. From its founding in 1883 until 26 Jun. '13, the Kaukauna paper mill was Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers). The rubble behind the snow fence is remnants of the old Thilmany mill, which was mostly demolished in 2013. Part of the original mill was saved and will be restored.

IC 9563
Title:  IC 9563
Description:  IC 9563 works the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 18 Jun. '20. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Title:  IC 9563
Description:  A CN local passes Arrowhead Park (left) and the corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, (right) as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 19 Jun. '20. Plexus occupies part of the former site of the P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years. The oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006. The mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The paper mill's water treatment facility stood to the left. Arrowhead Park is a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to these tracks.

Title:  IC 9563
Description:  A CN local passes the Main St. overpass as it shoves its train into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 1 Oct. '20. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background to the right. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. [The facility has undergone numerous name changes in its long history, but if one were to pick a generic and historic name for it, it would need to be Neenah Stove Works because that is what it was referred to for so many years, through several changes in ownership. The second most common generic reference would be the Neenah foundry, because for many years it was the only foundry in Neenah, but obviously that could cause confusion today.]

IC 9564 and EJE 703
Title:  IC 9564 and EJE 703
Description:  A CN train passes the FV&LS (or FOXY), former CN, originally C&NW, depot as it sets out cars at Appleton Junction, WI, on 16 Apr. '23. The train continued on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be a diamond right about where the front truck of EJE 703 rests, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building partially visible above EJE 703 is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Title:  IC 9565
Description:  CN local executes a runaround as it prepares to service Shawano Paper Mill (div. of Little Rapids Corp.) via former C&NW rails at West Shawano in Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI on 19 Dec. '17. Founded as the Wolf River Paper & Fiber Co. at Shawano, WI on 7 Feb. 1894, production of pulp commenced on 22 Oct. of that year. They didn’t start producing paper until 24 Dec. ’02, after installation of No. 1 Paper Machine and a new building to house it. They ceased production of pulp in ‘45 and the name was shortened to Wolf River Paper Co. The name was changed to Shawano Paper Mills ca. Nov. ‘49. The facility was leased to Little Rapids Pulp Co. (later Little Rapids Corp.) in Feb. ’50. They purchased the facility on 25 Jun. ’55; it continued to operate as Shawano Paper Mills. The name changed to Little Rapids Corp.-Shawano Mill in ‘93, but it is still commonly referred to as Shawano Paper Mill. The locomotive is running on an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. It was labelled as such on some old maps, and the name still appears on some property records.

Train was headed for Waupaca and had two locomotives, IC 9565 and IC 3138. The WC built a depot here (on the opposite side of Hwy. M) somewhere between 1871, when the line was laid, and 1889, when I found it depicted on a map in Plat Book of Outagamie County…, 1889. The site was labeled as Medina Station on maps until at least 1915.

Title:  IC 9565 and IC 3138
Description:  A CN local crosses S. Mason St. while headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 9 Nov. '18. Train has just set out a string of cars at the yard at Appleton Junction and is now bound for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I recently discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously.

Title:  IC 9565
Description:  A pair of crewmembers prepare to mount a CN local as it was getting ready to cross Washington St. after servicing U.S. Paper Mills Corp. at Menasha, WI on 27 Dec. '18. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small industrial island for many years. Some ground-hugging steam generated by the facility adds some interest to the scene on this already overcast day (obviously, some viewers may not share my assessment and enthusiasm of the scene).

I was intrigued by the presence of a pair of local law enforcement vehicles, with their lights activated. One is out-of-frame to the left, another rests next to the hi-rail.

IC 9565
Title:  IC 9565
Description:  A CN local parallels River St. and the Fox River Navigation Canal after servicing U.S. Paper Mills Corp. (out-of-frame to the left) at Menasha, WI, on 27 Dec. '18. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small industrial island for many years. This portion of what is now River St. used to be Canal St. The former historically ran parallel near the southern side of this island, along the North Branch (Menasha Branch) of the Fox River. The latter ran parallel along the northern side of this island, along the Fox River Navigation Canal. At some point in the late 1990s or early 2000s, part of River St. was vacated to facilitate expansion of what is now TC Transcontinental, Inc. (part of that expansion can be seen beyond the locomotive). That facility was originally home to the Menasha Printing & Carton Company, formed in 1917 through the merger of two older, neighboring companies, the Menasha Printing Co. and the Menasha Carton Co. Acquired by Marathon Paper (later Marathon Corp.) in '27, it became the Marathon Div. of American Can Co. in '57. James River Corp. acquired American Can in '82. At some point it was acquired by Bemis Co., who sold it to Exopack Holding Corp. (Sun Capital Partners, Inc.) in '10. At some point it became Coveris, until its purchase by TC Transcontinental, Inc. in '18. The remaining portions of the two streets were combined to form the current River St. Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., Menasha, WI, as well as the former joint MILW/SOO swing bridge over the canal, can be seen at right. Simply Incredible Foods purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities (Menasha Utilities) plant in Jun. '14. Some ground-hugging steam generated by the facility adds some interest to the scene on this already overcast day (obviously, some viewers may not share my assessment of and enthusiasm for the scene).

Title:  IC 3120, IC 9565, CN 9424
Description:  A trio of CN locomotives rest in front of the depot/yard office at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 10 Mar. '19. IC 9565 and CN 9424 rest on the main line. I'm not sure of their origin or destination, but it’s odd to see two locomotives passing through sans freight cars. IC 3120, the local power, rests on the yard lead. The north leg of the wye is hidden beneath the snow on this side of IC 3120.

Description:  A CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 24 Aug. '19. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, stands to the left. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, can be seen in the background.

The former Appleton Wood Products Co. factory, now part of the Miller Electric facility, is partially visible beyond that. Built in 1916, the walls include some nice, decorative brickwork (including cast or carved keystones depicting bowling pins above the windows), which Miller obscured with cheap metal siding at some point after they bought it ca. 1975.

Description:  A CN local crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former C&NW swing bridge at Kaukauna, WI, on 24 Apr. '22. Kaukauna Lock 2, historically Lock No. 6, counting from Green Bay, is partially visible to the right. The Warren pony truss bridge was built in 1893, according to http://bridgehunter.com (another reference states 1901). The Ahlstrom-Munksjö NA Specialty Solutions, LLC, Thilmany Mill looms in the background. Founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883, it became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers) in 1889, after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. It was acquired by Finland’s Ahlstrom-Munksjö on 10 Oct. ’18. The rehabilitation of the Kaukauna locks was completed in '15. The bridge was also rehabilitated in order to swing again. This view of the bridge was previously off limits. I wasn't sure if I was permitted to be here or not. I had heard that this was going to become a public recreation trail, but I don't know if it is officially open to the public yet. The fence gates have been removed, and I saw other people passing through, so I took that as a sign that the public was welcome.

It appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (behind me to the left).

Description:  A CN local approaches Milepost 1 and Garfield Ave. as it heads south via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 4 Jul. '19. The former Mondi Akrosil, LLC, facility, 206 Garfield Ave., is partially visible at right. Mondi moved the jobs to Pleasant Prairie, WI, circa '12. Originally Edgewater Paper Co., founded in 1917, which specialized in silicone coated release paper. It was purchased by Akrosil Corp., a holding company, in '69 but didn't change the name to Akrosil until Apr. '74. The Hammermill Paper Co. purchased Akrosil ca. '75, but apparently did not change the name. The facility operated as International Paper-Akrosil after International purchased Hammermill in '86. International sold some of its holdings, including this facility, to Kohlberg & Co., LLC, another holding company, in Jun. '05. Mondi Packaging, based in Vienna, Austria, purchased Akrosil in Jan. '06. There are remnants of a spur on the west side of the facility, but it has not received rail service for a long time. It appears to possibly be used for storage or warehousing.

Description:  A pair of CN locals face-off on the yard lead at the north end of the former SOO yard along Union St. at the former Adams St. grade crossing at Neenah, WI on 4 Jul. '19. Near local was waiting to return to the yard from Menasha and had one locomotive, IC 9568. Far local, throwing a little smoke, was preparing to cross over to the passing siding and head toward Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna, and had two locomotives, CN 4711 and CN 4705. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard (a few blocks to the south) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. Adams St. was originally Washington St., until at least 1913.

Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18. The former SOO rails, also in use by CN, run parallel to the right. W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. becomes N. Lake St. underneath the Polish Connection. Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., stands in the background. Founded in Menasha in Dec. 1917 as George Banta Paper Co., an affiliate of the George Banta Publishing Co. They merged with Menasha’s Gebrick Paper Co. in ’19 and continued under the Banta name. The name was changed to Central Paper Products Co. (later shortened to Central Paper Co.) ca. Sep. ’20, about the same time they moved to their new location at 422 Manitowoc St., on the north side of the joint MILW/SOO railroad tracks. It’s the same facility, but the addressed changed when a portion of Manitowoc St. was vacated to allow westward expansion ca. ’76-’80. The facility was acquired by Alco Standard Corp., based in Valley Forge, PA, ca. 29 Sep. ’69, but continued to operate as Central Paper. The name changed to Central Products Co. at some point after ’74. Spinnaker Industries, Inc., purchased Central Products Co. from Alco ca. 1 Jul. ‘95. Intertape Polymer Group, Inc., from Canada, purchased Central Products from Spinnaker ca. 12 Apr. ’99.
