IC 3129
Description:
A CN local halts near the United Cooperative Feed Mill 660 E. Seward St., on former SOO rails at Shawano, WI on 10 Nov. '18. Train will pick up 4 boxcars from the siding before continuing on to the Shawano Paper Mill. Between 2015-'17, almost all of the feed mill's buildings were razed and new, larger ones constructed during a nearly $7 million expansion project. The northern portion of this spur was laid where the SOO, originally W&N, depot stood from 1906 until the fall of 2013.

IC 3129
Description:
A CN local crosses Peach Rd. as it transitions from the former SOO rails to a section of track which connects to a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI on 10 Nov. '18. Peach Rd. is now the northern terminus of the former SOO (originally W&N) main line that once ran from Neenah to Argonne (the small stack of ties rests upon the right-of-way which continued northward). This connector track was installed around the time that the C&NW main line was abandoned, to facilitate continued rail service for the nearby Shawano Paper Mill. There is a fair amount of flange squealing as the train traverses this nearly 180 degree arc with an approximately 700 ft. radius.

IC 3129
Description:
A CN local crosses Hwy. MM as it prepares to switch the Shawano Paper Mill (div. of Little Rapids Corp.) via former C&NW rails at West Shawano, Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI on 10 Nov. '18. Founded as the Wolf River Paper & Fiber Co. on 7 Feb. 1894, the name was changed to Shawano Paper Mills ca. Nov. ‘49. The name changed to Little Rapids Corp.-Shawano Mill in ‘93, but it is still commonly referred to as Shawano Paper Mill. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. That name still appears on some property records. The train is running on an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (this is the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. It is an awesome bicycle ride, but I (obviously) would prefer to see trains running on it. The fence at right surrounds the paper mill's water treatment facility, which was built upon the former site of the Shawano Brick Yard (a.k.a. Larson Brick Yard). The brick yard, which had its own narrow gauge railway, produced fine white or cream colored brick from 1891 until 1946. The paper mill purchased the property at some point after the brick yard closed and eventually demolished the entire facility. The paper mill's historic office building was constructed in 1901 of brick from that yard.

IC 3129
Description:
A CN local parallels the Fox River and approaches the S. Memorial Dr. bridge as it descends the grade from the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, down into 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI on 18 Jun. '19. Train was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. The Appleton Yacht Club and Lutz Park can be seen in the background. The former MILW right-of-way, granting it access to 'The Flats' from Menasha, runs along the opposite bank of the river. The line was abandoned in 1981 and the land has been reclaimed by nature, and the rich snobs who own the homes overlooking the river. About all that remains of this portion of that branch is one of the abutments for the MILW swing bridge that used to cross the river under the S. Memorial Dr. bridge. Over the past several years, I have notice that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. However, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton is simply ‘The Flats.’

A CN local traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 28 Aug. '19. Local was headed for Waupaca. Local is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. The north leg of the wye is in the foreground. Description:
IC 3129 works in the CN, former SOO yard at Menasha, WI, on 7 Sep. '20. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St.; they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI, in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as an adjacent one. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s (according to tax records, this facility was built in 1966), they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it. Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., is partially visible in the background, at the opposite end of the yard.

CN through freight slowly pulls out past a CN local on former SOO rails at N. Lake St. in Neenah, WI on 15 Feb. '14. Through freight was likely enroute from Stevens Point to Green Bay and had two locomotives, IC 3133 pulling and CN 9673 pushing. Local was likely bound for Appleton and points beyond. A couple of miles away at Stroebe, another local was waiting to return to the former SOO yard in Neenah.

CN local approaches the former S. Oakland Ave. grade crossing as it hauls 9 cars southeast through the former GB&W Norwood yard at Green Bay, WI on 28 Mar. '15. Train was headed back the former C&NW yard at North Green Bay. Fox River Grain Elevator looms in the background. Fox River Grain Elevator is part of Fox River Valley Ethanol, near Oshkosh, WI. They were formerly GB Elevator and Utica Energy, respectively, until they were purchased and renamed by Ace Ethanol, based in Stanley, WI, in 2013. The elevator was once adorned with a pair of large GB&W logos. Other former names for this elevator include Didion Elevator (partially visible in blue letters at the top) and Strid Elevator. Additional information and photographs of the elevator and the yard can be found at: http://www.greenbayroute.com/.

IC 3138 and IC 3133
Description:
A pair of IC Geeps are the motive power of CN local passing a seemingly idle grain elevator and approaching Hwy. 175 as it heads southeast with about 10 boxcars via former SOO rails at Byron, WI on Memorial Day, 25 May '15. They may have been preparing to service the nearby Quad Graphics facility. The train was halted out of frame to the right for a while and I was walking along the road to obtain a better vantage point for when it would eventually continue on. However, it moved out before I had hoped it would, hence the less-than-desirable perspective.

IC 3137
Description:
CN local crosses the South Branch of the Manitowoc River via the former MILW bridge as it pulls into Chilton, WI on 26 Jul. '15. The early village was originally named Stantonville, in honor of Moses Stanton, founder. The land was purchased by John Marygold in 1852 and he changed the name to Chilington, his hometown in England. He sent a request to the county seat, then Stockbridge, to make the name change official. A miscommunication resulted in the middle syllable being lost to history and the name became Chilton.
