GTW 5656 and IC 9617
Description:
A CN local approaches the former C&NW swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal at Lock No. 3 (out of frame to right) as it hauls 37 cars westward vhrough 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 4 Aug. '14. Train had just descended the grade from Telulah Park on its way back to the yard at Appleton Junction after servicing Kimberly and Combined Locks. This view was captured from the abandoned former C&NW fixed bridge over the Fox River. The active line was originally laid by the MLS&W. I used to think that the abandoned bridge was former MILW, but I have since learned that it was C&NW. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Alats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

Description:
A pair of CN locals meet at Milepost 211 on former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI, on 29 Jan. '22. The local on the left was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The local on the right was headed back to Neenah after switching Appvion at Appleton. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016. The location of this photograph is listed as “Stroebe(2)” because whomever first listed Stroebe as a location on rrpicturearchives.net erroneously entered it as Outagamie Co., instead of Winmebago Co. IC 9623
Description:
CN local returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 17 Sep. '17. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. Part of the fence on this side of the tracks has been temporarily removed, and some turnouts rest on the ground, either old turnouts which were recently replaced, or new turnouts about to be installed.

IC 9623
Description:
CN local backs across River St. as it services Coveris (formerly Exopack), 271 River St., via a remnant of the former C&NW main line at Menasha, WI on 24 Sep. '17. The building at left is the neat, old office of the idled Whiting Paper Co., 100 River St. The paper machines were shut down on 30 Mar. '16 after 134 years of providing quality paper products and living-wage jobs. Originally the Whiting and Gilbert paper mill, it was built along the Fox River Navigation Canal on the site of an abandoned dry dock in 1882 (1881). The company was a partnership of George A. Whiting and Theodore and William Gilbert. It became the George A. Whiting Paper Mills in ‘86, after he bought out the Gilbert brothers. The name was changed to George A. Whiting Paper Co. in ‘11. Much of the current facility was built after a devastating fire and explosion on 24 Aug. 1888. In Mar. '14, the 5th generation of the Whiting family sold the company to Tom Danz, who joined the company in 1999; the name was changed to Whiting Paper Co. When the closure was announced, he claimed the company could not maintain the sales volume needed to remain profitable. The mill produced matte board, scrapbooking and high-end art paper, and its unique Kona Paper, made from recycled burlap coffee bean bags. The George A. Whiting Airport, at the intersection of Airport Rd. and Appleton Rd. in Menasha, WI, was named in his honor because he donated $5,000 to construct the facility ca. the '20s. Reportedly, it was "Wisconsin’s finest and busiest airport" in the '30s. When the government decreed that there could be only 1 airmail port per county, they chose the airfield at Oshkosh, WI and the George A. Whiting Airport soon faded into history (except for the hanger, currently home to Kitz & Pfeil True Value Hardware).

Whiting Airport soon faded into history (except for the hanger, currently home to Kitz & Pfeil True Value Hardware). Train was preparing to head back to the former SOO yard in Neenah after servicing several industries in the Twin Cities of Menasha and Neenah. Locals have to complete some interesting maneuvers to service industries on this small island as well as the adjacent Doty Island since most of the former C&NW rails were pulled up in Neenah and Menasha.

Description:
CN local passes behind the former SOO freight house as it approaches Oak St./Hwy. E while servicing Waupaca Foundry, Plant 1, out of frame to left, at Waupaca, WI on 4 Apr. '15. This is the 2nd WC/SOO freight house at Waupaca. It was built in early 1949 after the original freight house burned down in Nov. '48. The bowling alley next door to the south caught fire and the flames spread to the freight house. The original 1871 WC passenger depot was converted into a freight house after the 2nd depot was completed in Apr. ‘81. The 1st freight house had been moved from its original location to the current freight house location ca. 1901, when the 2nd depot was moved to the west side of Guard St., now Oak St.

IC 9625
Description:
CN local momentarily fouls Washington St. in order to service U.S. Paper Mills Corp. at Menasha, WI on 11 Oct. '15. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. The dark tan brick structure rising behind the paper mill is the stage house of the Brin Theater, which will hopefully see restoration someday. I am pretty sure it is the last surviving classic theater in the Fox Cities.

Description:
CN local crosses the frozen Mud Creek via a former SOO timber trestle bridge as it hauls 5 cars southwest at Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16) on 11 Feb. '17. The longer, center span consists of several steel I-beams; the remainder of the bridge is constructed of wood. I was standing on the ice under the former C&NW bridge, also in use by CN. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Shawano and Black Creek. Hiking parallel to the tracks through the Guckenburg-Sturm Preserve and then onto the frozen Mud Creek helps one avoid trespassing.

Description:
CN local crosses Towmen Rd. as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, WI on 12 Oct. '17. Shawano Junction is in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16). This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The tracks in the foreground are the crossover to the former C&NW rails. Train was returning from Shawano. MillTown Paper, Inc., 1286 Ehlers Rd., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), a rail customer, is in the background.
