CN 5715 and CN 2449
Description:
A CN container train heads south at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 26 Mar. '21. GTW 5825 and GTW 4616 rest in the yard. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994; it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:
CN container train parallels Harrison St. and approaches the W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 3 Sep. '17. The covered hoppers spotted by the silos in the background are part of the Bemis facility on Marathon Ave., a rail customer on a remnant of the former C&NW main line (the rails at far left). Train had two locomotives, CN 2570 and CN 5728. I was walking westward along the overpass, hoping to make it far enough to shoot around the telephone pole, but didn't quite make it.

A CN through freight approaches the mouth of the Neenah Slough at the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 18 Oct. '18. It sure was nice of the railroad to complete some much-needed brush clearing along the tracks here so that train nuts like me can capture better views of their trains.

CN 2612, CN 5731, CN 8877
Description:
A CN through freight rests along Hwy. 41 at Snells, WI on 28 Jan. '18. I can't tell if it has halted along the former SOO main line or the former C&NW main line, probably the latter. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. I do not know if each railroad had their own small depot, or if one small depot served both railroads, I suspect it was the latter. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone.

CN 5742
Description:
As a CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye, a CN work train traverses the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 May '20. The foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot stands to the left. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. A large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, stands in the background at left. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that.

CN 5742
Description:
A CN work train parallels Union St. as it shoves its train into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 May '20. The train was traversing the wye in order to turn around. The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., stands at left. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It is commonly referred to as the Hiram Smith Octagon House, Hiram purchased it from his brother Edward at some point. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993. The City of Neenah wanted to demolish it when the over-priced and over-budget Main St. overpass (out of frame to left) was built. Thankfully there were enough intelligent people around to save it. Some references suggest it was moved a short distance from its original site. Others claim the historic structure was not moved, but the overpass design was modified to accommodate it. An article from the local newspaper on 15 Apr. '98 stated, "federal rail safety funds will cover 90% of the additional $200,000 needed to move the historic Octagon House, 336 Main St., about 500 feet east to the corner of Smith and Torrey streets." (although, if it was actually moved, it wasn't moved that far). Of course, some questioned why those funds were utilized for a project that had no direct relation to rail safety. The process of trying to move the house dragged on for at least 3 years. An article in the local newspaper on 18 Oct. ’01 stated that the relocation was still going to happen, but the estimated cost to move it had tripled by that point. I thought it had been moved, but I never witnessed the process of moving it. Maybe I thought it was moved because I recall all of the talk of moving it. Regardless of whether it was moved or remains at its original site, I’m just glad that it was saved. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here.

CN 5744 and GECX 7388
Description:
A CN through freight approaches S. Perkins St. while headed northeast through past the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 3 Jun. '18. Train had two locomotives, CN 5744 and GECX 7388 (former CSX). Until recently, the building at right had a sign denoting its use by All About Packaging, Inc., Warehouse #2 (the dark rectangle above the service door shows where the sign was). There is a spur along the south side of the building, but the turnout for the spur was removed years ago. The oldest part of the building was completed in Mar. '60, the new facility for the Fox Valley Sheltered Workshop. Inc. (started in '55 to create employment opportunities for the disabled). It became Valley Packaging Industries Inc. ca. mid- or late-'80s. After they moved to a new facility, this one has been home to Valley Planing Mill, Inc., followed by Perfect Patterns, Inc.

Description:
CN train backs into the former C&NW and SOO yards at Wisconsin Rapids, WI on 4 Jul. '17. Both roads had parallel yards here, approximately 4 tracks each ca. 1973. Both roads used to cross the GB&W behind me. The track on the left has been truncated at the street, but it used to form the northwest quadrant of the junction. A junction of the MILW and GB&W was nearby (to the right) as well. A heavily powered CN local shoves its train across Hwy. 73 and into the yards of Domtar's abandoned Port Edwards, WI paper mill (historically Nekoosa-Edwards Paper Co.) via former MILW rails at Nekoosa Junction, WI, on 4 Jul. '17. The paper mill, built in 1896 by the John Edwards Manufacturing Co., was served by the MILW, SOO, C&NW, and Nekoosa-Edwards Paper Co., so there are 4 yards here. Domtar acquired the facility in '01 and threw 500 Americans out of work in '08. The facility sat abandoned until '13, when Domtar sold it to DMI Acquisitions, LLC, a vague entity which acquires idle industries to strip them of anything salvageable. They claim to be committed to finding new industrial tenants to occupy the facility and take advantage of the extensive rail infrastructure. Some references promise that, with 7-figure assistance from Wisconsin taxpayers, 800 new jobs will replace the 500 that were lost. Time will tell.

Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

CN 5754
Description:
A heavily powered CN local services ERCO Worldwide, 101 Hwy. 73 S., Nekoosa, WI (physically located in Port Edwards, WI) via former SOO rails at Nekoosa, WI, on 4 Jul. '17. The ERCO Worldwide facility partially visible in the background was built by Wyandotte Chemical, construction began in the spring of 1966 and it became operational in '67. Purchased by BASF in '69 or '70, it was known as BASF Wyandotte. Purchased in '80 by Vulcan Materials Co. for their Chemical Division (their Chem. Div. was named Vulcan Chemicals in '81). Occidental Chemical purchased Vulcan Chemicals from Vulcan Materials in '05. An FTC-imposed condition on the sale allowed Occidental to acquire Vulcan’s facilities at Geismar, LA, and Wichita, KS, but they were required to immediately sell the Port Edwards facility, which was purchased by Canada-based ERCO Worldwide. The facility currently produces chemicals for use by pulp/paper, food processing, agriculture, electronic, de-icing, petroleum and water treatment facilities. The tank cars at left rest upon the SOO branch from Wisconsin Rapids to Nekoosa, the locomotives and the remainder of the train are crossing over to the former C&NW branch between the two cities. There are remnants of MILW and Nekoosa-Edwards Paper Co. rails still in use in the vicinity as well, the four railroads ran side-by-side between Port Edwards and Nekoosa.

A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Apr. '19. Train had four locomotives, CN 2600, CN 2572, CN 5763, and GTW 5950. I’m curious to learn why the reporting marks have been removed from GTW 5950 (sometime between Apr. '11 and Jan. '15 according to photographs on this site). Who currently owns it? The lead locomotive is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Eggers Industries, originally Hardwood Products Co., 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left.
