CN 9530 and GTW 6226
Title:  CN 9530 and GTW 6226
Description:  A CN local approaches Depot St. while headed southwest via former C&NW rails at Little Chute, WI on 18 Jun. '14. The facility at right is Crystal Print, Inc., 500 Hart Ct., an active rail customer. I believe the depot stood on the north side of the tracks (left). In 1889 it stood on the south side (right) and what was then the north end of Verstegen St. The street was re-named Wilson St. at some point and what was once the north end of it is now part of the Crystal Print property.

Title:  GTW 6226
Description:  A CN local passes the W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge) as it returns to the south end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 3 Oct. '18. The W. Cecil St. overpass (Timothy Hamblin Bridge), erected to eliminate the grade crossing, opened to traffic on 20 Nov. '07.

GTW 6226
Title:  GTW 6226
Description:  A CN local, with about 13 cars, approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads southwest via former Soo Line (SOO) rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016), Winnebago Co., WI on 18 May '19. Local was headed back to Neenah from Shawano. The name of the road is misspelled Towman on the signal relay case. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here (out-of-frame to the right) which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange (a.k.a. Polish Connection) can be seen in the background. The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18.

GTW 6226
Title:  GTW 6226
Description:  GTW 6226 traverses the east leg of the wye at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Jun. '19. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen in the center of the scene. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The white building partially visible beyond the locomotive is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) stood to the left, at what is now Arrowhead Park, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill dominated the skyline in the background for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, (out of frame to left), and an Ascension clinic (formerly Affinity clinic) at 101 Main St. occupy most of the site of the old paper mill. Neenah's newest, modern eyesore, the Gateway office building (also obviously used by Plexus), looms in the background. After razing some more cool, old buildings, construction commenced on 4 May '16 and was completed about a year later. There is no room for historic buildings and classic architecture in Future Neenah.

Title:  GTW 6226
Description:  As the tail end of a CN local traverses the west leg of the wye, GTW 6226 waits on the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Jun. '19. The local has just passed the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Beyond the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) once dominated the scene beyond the trains, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill dominated the skyline in the background at right for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, the ugly, black blob, occupies part of the site of the old paper mill.

Title:  GTW 6228
Description:  CN local approaches Racine St. while sorting cars at the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 16 Aug. '15. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., Menasha, WI, they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

Description:  CN local crosses Appleton St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 16 Aug. '15. If you ask me, we do not see enough crossing signs that say “5 Tracks,” or more, around here anymore. I imagine the railroad wishes that Appleton St. did not bisect this small yard. Up until about 30 years ago this street also bisected the similar-sized Milwaukee Road (MILW) yard that used to stand behind me.

Title:  IC 9563
Description:  IC 9563 works the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI, on 18 Jun. '20. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

Description:  A CN local passes the Main St. overpass as it shoves its train into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 1 Oct. '20. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background to the right. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. [The facility has undergone numerous name changes in its long history, but if one were to pick a generic and historic name for it, it would need to be Neenah Stove Works because that is what it was referred to for so many years, through several changes in ownership. The second most common generic reference would be the Neenah foundry, because for many years it was the only foundry in Neenah, but obviously that could cause confusion today.]

Description:  CN local re-enters the passing siding (a remnant of the former C&NW main line) while servicing Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 at Neenah, WI on 9 Nov. '17. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The former SOO main line is in the foreground.

Description:  Waupaca-bound CN local kicks up some of the freshly fallen snow and approaches the junction with the former C&NW right-of-way, now the Wiouwash State Trail, as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Medina Junction, WI on 13 Dec. '17. This scene looks odd without the interesting, old telephone poles that stood along the far side of the tracks for 146 years, until they were removed between 4 and 18 Sep. '17. Looking southeast from the Train Watchers' bench; it was emplaced on the Wiouwash State Trail in 2016, "In honor of John Kurka, Papa to Sam and Caleb, "the Train Watchers.""

Description:  CN local executes a runaround as it prepares to service Shawano Paper Mill (div. of Little Rapids Corp.) via former C&NW rails at West Shawano in Town of Richmond, Shawano Co., WI on 19 Dec. '17. Founded as the Wolf River Paper & Fiber Co. at Shawano, WI on 7 Feb. 1894, production of pulp commenced on 22 Oct. of that year. They didn’t start producing paper until 24 Dec. ’02, after installation of No. 1 Paper Machine and a new building to house it. They ceased production of pulp in ‘45 and the name was shortened to Wolf River Paper Co. The name was changed to Shawano Paper Mills ca. Nov. ‘49. The facility was leased to Little Rapids Pulp Co. (later Little Rapids Corp.) in Feb. ’50. They purchased the facility on 25 Jun. ’55; it continued to operate as Shawano Paper Mills. The name changed to Little Rapids Corp.-Shawano Mill in ‘93, but it is still commonly referred to as Shawano Paper Mill. The locomotive is running on an approximately 2-mile scrap of the former C&NW mainline which once ran 83 miles from Green Bay to Wausau (the only active remnant outside of those two cities). That former main line is now the Mountain-Bay State Trail. The area around the mill, which includes some former company houses, used to be referred to as West Shawano. It was labelled as such on some old maps, and the name still appears on some property records.

It replaced the ca. 1881 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The Main St. overpass is visible at left.

The site was labeled as Medina Station on maps until at least 1915.

Train has just set out a string of cars at the yard at Appleton Junction and is now bound for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I recently discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously.

Description:  A pair of crewmembers prepare to mount a CN local as it was getting ready to cross Washington St. after servicing U.S. Paper Mills Corp. at Menasha, WI on 27 Dec. '18. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small industrial island for many years. Some ground-hugging steam generated by the facility adds some interest to the scene on this already overcast day (obviously, some viewers may not share my assessment and enthusiasm of the scene).

Title:  IC 9565
Description:  A CN local parallels River St. and the Fox River Navigation Canal after servicing U.S. Paper Mills Corp. (out-of-frame to the left) at Menasha, WI, on 27 Dec. '18. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small industrial island for many years. This portion of what is now River St. used to be Canal St. The former historically ran parallel near the southern side of this island, along the North Branch (Menasha Branch) of the Fox River. The latter ran parallel along the northern side of this island, along the Fox River Navigation Canal. At some point in the late 1990s or early 2000s, part of River St. was vacated to facilitate expansion of what is now TC Transcontinental, Inc. (part of that expansion can be seen beyond the locomotive). That facility was originally home to the Menasha Printing & Carton Company, formed in 1917 through the merger of two older, neighboring companies, the Menasha Printing Co. and the Menasha Carton Co. Acquired by Marathon Paper (later Marathon Corp.) in '27, it became the Marathon Div. of American Can Co. in '57. James River Corp. acquired American Can in '82. At some point it was acquired by Bemis Co., who sold it to Exopack Holding Corp. (Sun Capital Partners, Inc.) in '10. At some point it became Coveris, until its purchase by TC Transcontinental, Inc. in '18. The remaining portions of the two streets were combined to form the current River St. Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., Menasha, WI, as well as the former joint MILW/SOO swing bridge over the canal, can be seen at right. Simply Incredible Foods purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities (Menasha Utilities) plant in Jun. '14. Some ground-hugging steam generated by the facility adds some interest to the scene on this already overcast day (obviously, some viewers may not share my assessment of and enthusiasm for the scene).

Description:  A CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 24 Aug. '19. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, stands to the left. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016)), an active rail customer, can be seen in the background.
